Marco Beltrami (The Homesman), Danny Elfman (Big Eyes), John Powell (How To Train Your Dragon 2), Trent Reznor (Gone Girl) and Hans Zimmer (Interstellar) join THR's Kevin Cassidy to discuss the process behind scoring the top films of the year.
"Because everyone in the film grew up, I thought maybe the music should," John Powell said of his experience during his creation of the score of "How to Train Your Dragon 2." "Films are like icebergs, you have them at a certain point where they all look like they're all in a row but then they all start to move and they start to flow," Danny Elfman, composer of "Big Eyes" shares about his experience creating the score for the motion picture. "There wasn't a lot of room for misdirection and it just added a level of tension that I can hear in the music, which may be a good thing," Trent Reznor, the "Gone Girl" composer, dishes about the music that surrounded the Oscar-nominated drama. "This project was sort of so delicious, it was so nice," said "Interstellar" composer Hans Zimmer about his time on set of the sci-fi flick. "I could just go and express my ideas and whatever I wanted to try out, we could try out." "For me the whole thing is trying to distill the essence of the picture to the most simple element," Marco Beltrami, composer of "The Homesman" shares. "Finding that element is key to me maybe as just an idiosyncrasy of how I work, it keeps me focused on where I am and how I work and where I'm going."

Composer
A composer (Latin com+ponere, literally "one who puts together") is a person who creates music. The core meaning of the term refers to individuals who have contributed to the tradition of Western classical music through creation of works expressed in written musical notation. In broader usage, "composer" can designate people who participate in other musical traditions, as well as those who create music by means other than written notation: for example, through improvisation, recording, and arrangement. In popular music genres, musicians who create new songs are typically called songwriters.

Trent Reznor
Michael Trent Reznor (born May 17, 1965), known professionally as Trent Reznor, is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, and film score composer. As a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, he has led the industrial rock project Nine Inch Nails since 1988. His first release as Nine Inch Nails, the 1989 album Pretty Hate Machine, was a commercial and critical success. He has since released eight studio albums. He left Interscope Records in 2007 and was an independent recording artist until signing with Columbia Records in 2012.
Reznor was associated with the bands Option 30, The Urge, The Innocent, and Exotic Birds in the mid-1980s. Outside of Nine Inch Nails, he has contributed to the albums of artists such as Marilyn Manson and Saul Williams. He and his wife, Mariqueen Maandig, are members of the post-industrial group How to Destroy Angels, alongside Reznor's fellow composer Atticus Ross and long-time Nine Inch Nails graphic designer Rob Sheridan.
Reznor and Ross scored the David Fincher films The Social Network (2010), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011), and Gone Girl (2014), winning the Academy Award for Best Original Score for The Social Network and the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. In 1997, Reznor appeared in Time's list of the year's most influential people, while Spin magazine has described him as "the most vital artist in music".

Hans Florian Zimmer (German pronunciation: [hans ˌfloːʁi̯aːn ˈtsɪmɐ]; born 12 September 1957) is a German composer and record producer. Since the 1980s, he has composed music for over 150 films. His works include The Lion King, for which he won Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1994, the Pirates of the Caribbean series, The Thin Red Line, Gladiator, The Last Samurai, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, and Interstellar.
Zimmer spent the early part of his career in the United Kingdom before moving to the United States. He is the head of the film music division at DreamWorks studios and works with other composers through the company that he founded, Remote Control Productions.
Zimmer's works are notable for integrating electronic music sounds with traditional orchestral arrangements. He has received four Grammy Awards, three Classical BRIT Awards, two Golden Globes, and an Academy Award. He was also named on the list of Top 100 Living Geniuses, published by The Daily Telegraph.

"Films are like icebergs, you have them at a certain point where they all look like they're all in a row but then they all start to move and they start to flow," Danny Elfman, composer of "Big Eyes" shares about his experience creating the score for the motion picture. "There wasn't a lot of room for misdirection and it just added a level of tension that I can hear in the music, which may be a good thing," Trent Reznor, the "Gone Girl" composer, dishes about the music that surrounded the Oscar-nominated drama. "This project was sort of so delicious, it was so nice," said "Interstellar" composer Hans Zimmer about his time on set of the sci-fi flick. "I could just go and express my ideas and whatever I wanted to try out, we could try out." "For me the whole thing is trying to distill the essence of the picture to the most simple element," Marco Beltrami, composer of "The Homesman" shares. "Finding that element is key to me maybe as just an idiosyncrasy of how I work, it keeps me focused on where I am and how I work and where I'm going."

There is really no one quite like Thelonious Monk in the whole history of jazz music. His compositional style, much like his odd, fractured and angular piano playing, was deceptively simple and repetitive, full of endlessly circular progressions that seemed to almost intersect themselves at whim, ending up more like auditory puzzle boxes than anything resembling a jazz standard. There is really no one quite like Thelonious Monk in the whole history of jazz music. His compositional style, much like his odd, fractured and angular piano playing, was deceptively simple and repetitive, full of endlessly circular progressions that seemed to almost intersect themselves at whim, ending up more like auditory puzzle boxes than anything resembling a jazz standard. But at least two of Monk's compositions, "'Round Midnight" and "Straight No Chaser," are just that, modern jazz standards, and a similar case could be made for "Ruby, My Dear" and several other of Monk's pieces.
