Edward the Confessor (between 1003 and 1005 – 4 or 5 January 1066), son of Æthelred the Unready and Emma of Normandy, was one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings of England and is usually regarded as the last king of the House of Wessex, ruling from 1042 to 1066.
Edward has traditionally been seen as unworldly and pious, and his reign as notable for the disintegration of royal power in England and the advance in power of the Godwin family. His biographers, Frank Barlow and Peter Rex, dispute this, picturing him as a successful king, who was energetic, resourceful and sometimes ruthless, but whose reputation has been unfairly tarnished by the Norman conquest shortly after his death. Other historians regard this positive picture as only partly true, and not at all in the later part of his reign. In the view of Richard Mortimer, the return of the Godwins from exile in 1052 "meant the effective end of his exercise of power". The difference in his level of activity from the earlier part of his reign "implies a withdrawal from affairs".

Time Team descended upon the sleepy Oxfordshire village of Islip - population about 600 - the birthplace of Edward the Confessor.
The villagers of Islip had been celebrating the millennium of Edward's birth in the first years of the 11th century. They wanted Time Team to discover the location of a medieval chapel dedicated to their famous royal son - and possibly to find evidence of a reputed royal palace belonging to his father, Ethelred.

Edward the Confessor
Edward the Confessor (Old English: Ēadweard Andettere, Latin: Eduardus Confessor; 1003 – 5 January 1066) was among the last Anglo-Saxon kings of England, and usually considered the last king of the House of Wessex, ruling from 1042 to 1066.
The son of Æthelred the Unready and Emma of Normandy, Edward succeeded Cnut the Great's son - and his half brother - Harthacnut, restoring the rule of the House of Wessex after the period of Danish rule since Cnut conquered England in 1016. When Edward died in 1066, he was succeeded by Harold Godwinson, who was defeated and killed in the same year by the Normans under William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings. Edgar the Ætheling, who was of the House of Wessex, was proclaimed king after the Battle of Hastings in 1066, but never ruled and was deposed after about eight weeks.
As discussed below, historians disagree about Edward's fairly long (24 year) reign. His nickname reflects the traditional image of him as unworldly and pious. Confessor reflects his reputation as a saint who did not suffer martyrdom, as opposed to King Edward the Martyr. Some portray this king's reign as leading to the disintegration of royal power in England and the advance in power of the House of Godwin, because of the infighting after his heirless death. Biographers Frank Barlow and Peter Rex instead portray Edward as a successful king, who was energetic, resourceful and sometimes ruthless, arguing that the Norman conquest shortly after his death tarnished his image. However, Richard Mortimer argues that the return of the Godwins from exile in 1052 "meant the effective end of his exercise of power", citing Edward's reduced activity as implying a withdrawal from affairs".

The villagers of Islip had been celebrating the millennium of Edward's birth in the first years of the 11th century. They wanted Time Team to discover the location of a medieval chapel dedicated to their famous royal son - and possibly to find evidence of a reputed royal palace belonging to his father, Ethelred.

Thousands took to the streets of Turkey on Saturday in support of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after authorities crushed a military coup that claimed at least 265 lives. After facing down the bloodiest challenge to his 13-year rule, Erdogan triumphantly addressed flag-waving supporters in Istanbul following Friday's chaos in the strategic NATO member of 80 million people....

Bastille Day revelers were targeted in what is being called a terrorist attack by a truck carrying hand grenades and other weapons drove onto a sidewalk for more than a mile, killing 77 people before police were able to shoot and kill the driver according to The Associated Press.
