Year 8 - Unit 2 Geography: Trade
On the 14th of May, 2015, our geography teacher, Mr. Topp, assigned the class a new project about fairtrade. He said that we were to make a creation, and that it could be anything we liked. Mahan and I turned to each other and I knew we were thinking the same thing, a film. So, we called about 15 different companies from 3 different countries, all associated with fairtrade in some way, and asked for an interview over Skype or the phone. Unfortunately, they all said something like "sorry, we're too busy", or, "Our team is too small to take interviews". One company (who will not be named) said that apparently "we just received a call from the board 2 minutes ago, and he said that we were not allowed to except anymore customer-interviews," believable, just like I'm half Jamaican. We just decided to make do with what we had in Hong Kong, and over the course of two very short weeks, we managed to make this.
This experience was not only very enjoyable and interesting, but we also learnt a lot about fairtrade, and how hard it is to make a film in just 2 weeks. All I wish for is that more subjects at school would have projects like this.

Fielding Mellish (Woody Allen) is a neurotic blue collar man who tries to impress social activist Nancy (Louise Lasser) by trying to get in touch with the revolution in San Marcos, a fictional South American country, or "banana republic." He visits San Marcos and attempts to show his concern for the native people. However, nearly killed by the local caudillo, only to be saved by the revolutionaries, he is then indebted to help them. Mellish clumsily learns how to be a revolutionary. When the revolution is successful, the Castro-style leader goes mad, forcing the rebels to place Mellish as their President.

Banana is the common name for herbaceous plants of the genus Musa and for the fruit they produce. It is one of the oldest cultivated plants. They are native to tropical South and Southeast Asia, and are likely to have been first domesticated in Papua New Guinea. Today, they are cultivated throughout the tropics. They are grown in at least 107 countries, primarily for their fruit, and to a lesser extent to make fiber, banana wine and as ornamental plants. Its fruits, rich in starch, grow in clusters hanging from the top of the plant. They come in a variety of sizes and colors when ripe, including yellow, purple, and red.
Almost all modern edible parthenocarpic bananas come from two wild species – Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. The scientific names of bananas are Musa acuminata, Musa balbisiana or hybrids Musa acuminata × balbisiana, depending on their genomic constitution. The old scientific names Musa sapientum and Musa paradisiaca are no longer used.
Banana is also used to describe Enset and Fe'i bananas, neither of which belong to the aforementioned species. Enset bananas belong to the genus Ensete while the taxonomy of Fe'i-type cultivars is uncertain.

The film was criticized by Dole for containing "patent falsehoods". After a screening at the Los Angeles Film Festival in June 2009, Gertten was sued for defamation by Dole on 8 July. The lawsuit was preceded by threats of legal action from Dole aimed against the LA Film Festival, which resulted in sponsors pulling support and the film being removed from competition. Dole dropped their lawsuit against Fredrik Gertten and Bananas!* on 15 October 2009.

On the 14th of May, 2015, our geography teacher, Mr. Topp, assigned the class a new project about fairtrade. He said that we were to make a creation, and that it could be anything we liked. Mahan and I turned to each other and I knew we were thinking the same thing, a film. So, we called about 15 different companies from 3 different countries, all associated with fairtrade in some way, and asked for an interview over Skype or the phone. Unfortunately, they all said something like "sorry, we're too busy", or, "Our team is too small to take interviews". One company (who will not be named) said that apparently "we just received a call from the board 2 minutes ago, and he said that we were not allowed to except anymore customer-interviews," believable, just like I'm half Jamaican. We just decided to make do with what we had in Hong Kong, and over the course of two very short weeks, we managed to make this.
This experience was not only very enjoyable and interesting, but we also learnt a lot about fairtrade, and how hard it is to make a film in just 2 weeks. All I wish for is that more subjects at school would have projects like this.

'Bananas on the Breadboard' is a 52 minute documentary celebrating life and traditions in the markets area of Dublin's North West Inner City. Through a series of interviews with local people and location and archive film, the documentary tells stories from the fruit and vegetable market, the former fish market and Smithfield. It also tells the story of street trading synonymous with this part of the city which many local families, particularly women, have been involved in for generations. As well as the many interviews with local people the film features the last interview with Tony Gregory who was a passionate defender of the women's right to trade in their own city. There is also a contribution from Johnny Giles who spent his early years kicking ball in Ormond Square while his mother was out street trading.

What is a big corporation capable of in order to protect its brand? Swedish filmmaker Fredrik Gertten's experienced this recently.
His previous film BANANAS!* (2009) recounts the lawsuit that 12 Nicaraguan plantation workers brought against the fruit giant Dole Food Company.
The film was selected for competition by the Los Angeles Film Festival. Nothing wrong so far, right? But then Gertten gets a strange message: the festival removes BANANAS!* from competition.
