Praised by the New York Times as "a charismatic cellist", Saeunn Thorsteinsdottir has appeared as recitalist and chamber musician across the US, Germany, Poland, Italy, France and her native Iceland and has performed concerti with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Silesian Philharmonic (Poland) among others. She has garnered numerous top prizes, including the Janigro Family and Romanini Foundation Awards at the Antonio Janigro International Cello Competition in Zagreb, Croatia and the Zara Nelsova Award at the 2008 Naumburg Competition in New York City. Saeunn was recently chosen as the recipient of a Career Grant from the Rachel Elizabeth Barton Foundation and nominated for the "Brightest Hope" of the 2010 Icelandic Music Awards. An avid chamber musician, Saeunn has collaborated in performance with Itzhak Perlman, Kim Kashkashian, the Cavani Quartet, and members of the Guarneri Quartet in venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Currently, Saeunn is a member of Ensemble ACJW and a fellow of The Academy, a collaboration of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education, performing chamber music at Carnegie Hall and bringing classical music to students in the New York City Public Schools. Brinton Averil Smith, cellist. Ernest Bloch's Suite No. 1 for violoncello solo (1956). From a faculty recital at Rice's Shepherd School of Music on 3/15/10. Other works on the program included solo cello works by Reger, Sibelius, Rozsa, Ysaye, Cassado and transcriptions for solo cello of works by Paganini and Chopin. This Bloch Suite was written for and dedicated to my teacher Zara Nelsova who gave one of the first fully solo cello recitals as her NY debut. His studies continued at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Royal Academy of Music in London, Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sophia in Madrid and European Academy of Music in Aix-en-Provence where he studied with Stefan Popov, Zara Nelsova, Radu Aldulescu, Lawrence Lesser and Marin Cazacu. He also studied and worked in various string quartet master classes with members of the Amadeus, Alban Berg, Hagen, Tokyo and Emerson Quartets. In 1999 the ConTempo Quartet was offered a Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where each member coached chamber music groups. In 2003, after an international audition, Adrian and his colleagues from ConTempo became Galways Quartet-in-Residence on the west coast of Ireland, a job sponsored by the National University of Galway, the National TV Channel TG4 & the Arts Council. Adrian won many national competitions all over Romania and two prizes in International Cello Competitions in Bucharest and Sofia. As a member of the ConTempo String Quartet he has won a record of 13 international prizes in competitions such as London, Munich, Hamburg, Rome, Graz, Berlin, Bucharest & Prague. Classical guitarist, Robert Wetzel and cellist, Gaiana Mndoian perform as a duo in a live concert on May 19, 2002 in La Mesa, California, California. The beautiful Spanish piece, Cordoba, was originally composed for solo piano by Isaac Albeniz. It is heard and seen here as an arrangement for cello and guitar. Gaiana Mndoian, a brilliant master cellist, concert and recording artist, was a former pupil of the legendary Mstislav Rostropovich. She also taught cello students at the Moscow Conservatory of Music before moving to the United States. Ms. Mndoian now resides in San Diego, California.
