Thanks for following along

Make sure you check out SMH Sport and The Age Sport for a match report and all the wash-up from this afternoon's cracking final.

Congratulations to the Thunder, you've shown the boys how to do it.

I'll be back a little later to blog the BBL final, which gets underway at 7.20pm.

See you then.

Social media reacts to Sydney Thunder's historic win

And exhale...

What a brilliant final and advertisement for women's cricket. That match had everything.

The Thunder players have sprawled onto the field and are basking in the glory of winning the first ever WBBL final.

Is this a sign of things to come this evening?

what a shot!

The Thunder have won!

Ellyse Perry bowls a wide and then they scamper through for a run as well.

Perry tries to throw the stumps down but she misses. And then smiles. What a legend.

Two off three

Cheatle now on strike.

wicket!

WICKET!

Perry gets Farrell, who is caught going for glory trying to hit over mid-off.

Obviously, the most important thing is that it's a dot ball.

17-year-old Lauren Cheatle comes to the crease. Reckon she's nervous?

Three runs needed off four balls.

Three off five

A single turned around the corner helps.

Ellyse Perry will bowl the final over

Can she get the job done?

what a shot!

A poor throw and some sloppy backing up sees the Thunder get three runs when they probably should have only got one. That changes things.

Kapp's final ball is...a dot. She finishes with 1/11 from four overs.

Four runs needed off the last over. Hold on to your hats.

wicket!

And another wicket!

It's run out galore at theb MCG as this WBBL goes down to the wire.

Erin Osborne comes back for two but doesn't make her ground.

What pressure for the new batters coming to the crease.

Seven runs from eight balls needed.

Eight off nine balls needed

A dot from Kapp and then Farrell bunts one to Perry at point who misses a shot at the none-strikers.

wicket!

Blackwell gone! Thunder have lost 3/7

Marizanne Kapp bowls Blackwell first ball of her final over. What a remarkable effort (even if the Sixers don't get up here).

AJ Blackwell b Kapp 30 (23b 3x4 0x6) SR: 130.43

Nine off 11 needed. Two batters in who haven't faced a ball yet.

wicket!

Another wicket makes things interesting

Nicola Carey is caught short of her ground too as Kara Sutherland nails a throw from the boundary.

NJ Carey run out 1 (1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

A ball before, Lauren Smith misfields a tough one on the fence and yet again, another fielding blunder could cost the Sixers today.

Aley finishes her four overs with 2/19.

Nine needed from 12 balls. One boundary should do it for the Thunder.

What a play! Haynes gone

Ellyse Perry drops Rachael Haynes at mid-wicket. Gutted, she chases after the ball and throws it into Healy who whips the bails off as Haynes is caught short of her ground.

Supreme foxing from Perry there.

16 needed from 16 balls. Seven wickets in the sheds. The Thunder have reached 100 now as well.

Blackwell relieves pressure

Single and a two to start the over. Lauren Smith doing a good job with her off breaks.

FOUR! Blackwell belts a knee-high full toss for a boundary, that's massive for the Thunder, they now need less than a run a ball. Fair effort by the fielders on the rope.

2/99 from 17 with 17 needed from 18 balls.

Perry back into the attack

Realises she needs to inject herself into the game otherwise the Thunder might peel off these runs with ease.

It's been a fair over from Perry. This is going to go down to the wire. Seven per cent of people who voted in the earlier poll have tipped a tie - which would result in a super over. Can you imagine.

2/88 from 16 - 28 from 24 needed. Seven runs an over to win.

For those heading down a little later

Sthalekar has pegged it back somewhat - the run rate is increasing slightly. And as I type that expecting to hit publish at the end of the over, a misfield goes for four. Costs the Sixers three runs. Dear o' dear.

First boundary since the ninth over.

2/80 from 15 - 36 from 30 needed.

Smith's been good for the Sixers. She hasn't taken a pole, but has conceded just four runs an over.

2/72 from 14 - 44 from 36 needed.
