Steven Whitmire (born September 24, 1959) is an American puppeteer. He works for The Jim Henson Company, Sesame Workshop and Disney's The Muppets Studio.

Whitmire was born near Atlanta, Georgia. During childhood, he professed interest in puppetry. While in high school at Berkmar High School, Whitmire's nickname was "Kermit" because of his interest in the Muppets. He built his own crude version of Henson's alter ego, and performed the character at high school talent shows and choral recitals.

Whitmire first appeared on local Atlanta TV with his then alter ego puppet Otis. WATL-TV was owned at that time by former Atlanta children's television host "Officer Don" Kennedy. Otis made appearances on various WATL 36 shows with Ludlow Porch, voice of the Georgia Bulldogs Larry Munson, Don Kennedy and Entertainment Page host Artie Goodman. As Otis, Whitmire interviewed Olivia Newton John during a tour promoting an album.

He worked with puppets after graduating high school, and eventually got a job working on The Muppet Show in 1978. Since then, Whitmire has performed in almost every major Henson company project, including non-Muppet fare such as the feature films The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth and the ABC television series Dinosaurs.

Kermit the Frog is Jim Henson's most famous Muppet creation, first introduced in 1955. He is the protagonist of many Muppet projects, most notably on The Muppet Show, and Sesame Street, as well as in movies, specials, and public service announcements throughout the years. Henson originally performed Kermit until his death on May 16, 1990; Steve Whitmire has performed Kermit since that time. Here I play the role of the unseen/generic "Hawkins," and team up with Stevenson the Parrot (voiced by Bruce Lanoil, he was supposed to be in the movie but never made the cut) and all your favorite Muppet characters, from Kermit the Frog (Steve Whitmire), the Great Gonzo (Dave Golez), Rizzo the Rat (Steve Whitmire again), Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy and Sam the Eagle (all three by the great Frank Oz), and several other Muppets with voices by Kevin Clash, Jerry Nelson and others. It's adventure mixed with your usual Muppety goodness, including pies in the face, lampshade hanging, even firing Beaker out of a cannon! This part covers Disc 1 (as this game was made prior to the DVD days, it had to be stored on three compact discs that you would change during gameplay), which takes place in the Benbow Inn and the British town of Bristol as it appeared in the 18th century!

The special was taped in Studio D at England's Elstree Studios, the same studio where The Muppet Show was shot. Filming took place from February 10 to 22, 1986. When the special originally aired on HBO, it opened with an introduction from Jim Henson walking through a park: “ Hi there, my name's Jim Henson and I'd like to tell you a little bit about The Bunny Picnic. Now the idea for this started one evening when my daughter Cheryl and I were sitting in a park at twilight. And while we were sitting there a whole big bunch of bunny rabbits came hopping out looking to all the world like they were gonna have a meeting or convention or something. About that time a great big dog showed up on the scene, he saw the rabbits he started barking like mad. The rabbits of course disappeared in a flash. Cheryl and I thought it might be fun to make up a story about what had just happened, and from that notion came 'The Tale of the Bunny Picnic'. And this tale starts with a phrase like many other good stories, "Once upon a time ..." ” This one-hour storybook special tells the story of Bean Bunny, who learns that he is worthwhile even though he seems too insignificant to be of much help to anyone. As the story begins, a group of bunnies in a forest meadow make preparations for the annual Bunny Picnic, a special celebration of the first day of spring marked by a visit from the Storyteller Bunny. Bean wants to help with the preparations, but his older siblings, Lugsy and Twitch, consider him to be a nuisance. When Bean wanders off into the forest, he becomes alarmed when he sees a dog, and goes back to warn the others. But a dog has not been seen in the area for many years, and because Bean has a reputation for daydreaming and pretending, no one in the warren will believe him. Here I play the role of the unseen/generic "Hawkins," and team up with Stevenson the Parrot (voiced by Bruce Lanoil, he was supposed to be in the movie but never made the cut) and all your favorite Muppet characters, from Kermit the Frog (Steve Whitmire), the Great Gonzo (Dave Golez), Rizzo the Rat (Steve Whitmire again), Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy and Sam the Eagle (all three by the great Frank Oz), and several other Muppets with voices by Kevin Clash, Jerry Nelson and others. It's adventure mixed with your usual Muppety goodness, including pies in the face, lampshade hanging, even firing Beaker out of a cannon! This part covers Disc 1 (as this game was made prior to the DVD days, it had to be stored on three compact discs that you would change during gameplay), which takes place in the Benbow Inn and the British town of Bristol as it appeared in the 18th century!

Kermit the Frog is Jim Henson's most famous Muppet creation, first introduced in 1955. He is the protagonist of many Muppet projects, most notably on The Muppet Show, and Sesame Street, as well as in movies, specials, and public service announcements throughout the years. Henson originally performed Kermit until his death on May 16, 1990; Steve Whitmire has performed Kermit since that time. He was voiced by Frank Welker in Muppet Babies and occasionally in other animation projects. Kermit performed the hit single "Rainbow Connection" in 1979 for The Muppet Movie, the first feature-length film featuring Henson's Muppets. The song reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. Kermit's iconic look and voice have been recognizable worldwide since, and in 2006, the character was credited as the author of Before You Leap: A Frog's Eye View of Life's Greatest Lessons, which is an "autobiography" told from the perspective of the character himself.
