DEVIATION - (1971, Full Movie) UK Horror UNCUT in English (Dir. José Ramón Larraz )
"Deviation" is a sensory trip difficult to translate into words. Larraz' world is unique - landscape, people and sensuality blend harmoniously in his films. He's a good actor's director that can extract natural performances from his actors even when they are at their most bizarre.
"Deviation" could be labeled as an atmospheric psycho-horror film - from the very beginning we enter a realm of weirdness and fantasy.
Those of you that have a weak spot for the early 70s and swinging England should check out this film. See the hippie happenings in "the Refuge". And Rebecca teaches us how to smoke the pipe of peace. All this underlined by the beautiful prog rock score by Stelvio Cipriani.

The first part of Filmbar70's Top Ten British Thrillers of the '70s, created for the screening of 'And Soon the Darkness'.
No. 10 - Deviation (1971) Directed by Jose Ramon Larraz, starring Karl Lanchbury
No. 9 - Killer's Moon (1978) Directed by Alan Birkinshaw, starring David Jackson
No. 8 - Fear in the Night (1972) Directed by Jimmy Sangster, starring Judy Geeson, Peter Cushing, Ralph Bates, Joan Collins
No. 7 - Fright (1971) Directed by Peter Collinson, starring Susan George, Honor Blackman, Ian Bannen
No. 6 - Fragment of Fear (1970) Directed by Richard C. Sarafian, starring David Hemmings, Gayle Hunnicutt
Filmbar70 celebrates British thrillers of the '70s, films that presented psychotic terror squarely at a young crowd in drab times, often depicting them in turn as terrorised babysitting teens, late to the party hippies on a misguided kick, disenfranchised social misfits, or wayward middle class family units self-destructing. They indeed reflected the pessimistic times of a beleaguered country in the throes of austerity and in part proved to be the last gasp of British genre industry. And they often starred Judy Geeson.
The films in our top ten can be seen primarily as a continuation of 'Peeping Tom' ('60) and, of course, 'Psycho' ('60), with their winning mixture of knife-wielding exploitation, noir and kitchen sink drama. With the advent of Powell and Hitchcock's seminal films even the likes of Hammer would occasionally drop the gothic template and get in on the act with titles such as 'Stop Me Before I Kill' ('60), 'Maniac' ('63) and 'Paranoiac' ('63) often depicting unhinged beatniks up to no good. The trend continued into the mid to late 60's and into the early '70s with 'Night Must Fall' ('64), 'Twisted Nerve' ('68) and 'The Night Digger' ('71) presenting disturbed youth at a time when it was supposed to be swinging.
A sub genre term 'home invasion' arrived and located itself on these shores with 1971's 'Straw Dogs'. Peckinpah's film had a huge effect on British exploitation films that followed although home invasion terror could possibly be traced 4 years earlier with Peter Collinson's visceral 'The Penthouse' ('67). Indeed Collinson would follow up on his home invasion theme the same year as 'Straw Dogs' with 'Fright', featuring the perpetually abused 'Dogs' star Susan George.
Of course Brit thrill roots go back as far back as the late 1920's, films such as Alfred Hitchcock's 'Blackmail' ('29) and 'The Lodger' ('29). However these dark thrills were maybe out of vogue with the times and didn't continue by and large through the depression, studios wanted lighter fair. However with the heyday of film noir came the occasional slice of psychological terror such as 'Gaslight' ('40), the great Thorold Dickinson's original British version, which Hollywood remade and shamelessly tried to bury.
Bringing it right back to the 70's and tonight's feature presentation
'And Soon the Darkness' ('70) is probably the pinnacle of British thrillers of the time. The great director Robert Fuest died in March and our evening is inspired and dedicated to him.

Written and directed by José Ramón Larraz (1929-2013) under the name J.R. Larrath, Whirlpool (aka) Perversion Flash (aka) She Died with Her Boots On is an erotic thriller which was the directorial debut from one of the most underrated and oft-neglected genre filmmakers of his generation. The film itself is rather an amateurish affair given that his latter works are far better, but contains the same themes: sexual perversity played out against a background of haunting, natural beauty and moody isolation. A British / Danish co-production based on an idea by Sam Lomberg, the film starred Karl Lanchbury, Vivian Neves (1947-2002), Pia Andersson, Johanna Hegger, Andrew Grant, Barry Craine, and Ernest C. Jennings (1902-1994). Shot on a shoestring budget, this long lost gem disappeared for several decades until Arrow Video restored and re-released it in 2019.
Beautiful young fashion model Tulia (Vivian Neves) thinks she is getting a major opportunity when magazine editor Sarah (Pia Andersson) invites her to her country cottage for the weekend so that her brilliant photographer nephew Theo (Karl Lanchbury) can take some shots of her to fill out her portfolio. Not entirely naïve, Tulia realizes that both Sarah and Theo have a sexual interest in her (and in each other), but the atmosphere of the cottage, the surrounding woods, and the lake starts to get to her. Tulia also intuits that Theo and Sarah previously had a similar relationship with Rhonda (Johanna Hegger) who recently parted their company; indeed, she feels increasingly that she is being slotted into the girl's place. When Rhonda's older married lover (Edwin Brown) comes snooping around after being informed by the police that the girl is missing, Tulia starts to wonder if Rhonda really left and if Theo's sadistic and voyeuristic games - including springing a faux-rapist (Arthur Grant) to photograph her fearful reaction - end with the click of his camera. Written off as a cheap and nasty sex film, there is actually more to this than the sleaze aspect. The cinematography by Julio Pérez de Rozas is quite impressive. There is an air of suppressed madness, and it is never quite clear what the real relationships and motivations are between the characters. The soundtrack also adds its own layer of mystery to the film. Unfortunately, Larraz’s directorial style was not yet fully developed, though it is an interesting yet disturbing and highly suspenseful thriller that is certainly not free of faults by a long shot but is a perfectly entertaining film that will keep the viewer invested from start to finish.
Shot without live sound, the film's post-production took place in Italy with editing by Carlo Reali and a score by Stelvio Cipriani which included cues that would later become part of the CAM library and be utilized heavily by Paul Naschy for films like The Mummy's Revenge and The Craving. The sordid goings-on within the film are given an unexpected lift by a typically grandiose and classy score from Cipriani, whose tasteful musical scoring delivers a series of sumptuous arrangements that are sultry, romantic, moody and threatening.

The sordid goings-on within the film are given an unexpected lift by a typically grandiose and classy score from Cipriani, whose tasteful musical scoring delivers a series of sumptuous arrangements that are sultry, romantic, moody and threatening.

Cast:
Karl Lanchbury - Julian
Lisbet Lundquist - Rebecca
Sibyla Grey - Olivia
Malcolm Terris - Paul
Shelagh Wilcocks - Auntie
Geoffrey Wincott - Old Man Chemist
Frederick Schrecker - Old Man Taxidermist
Andrew Grant
Debbi Garland - Vivian
Hugh Fraser
Director - José Ramón Larraz
Producer - José Ramón Larraz; Remo Odevaine
