Robert Gene McCormack was charged with murder Wednesday in the shooting death of a 43-year-old man in Foothill Farms last week.
The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office identified the victim Wednesday as Kert Lackey, 43, of Orangevale.
McCormack’s arraignment, which began Wednesday, is to continue July 25 in Sacramento Superior Court, to allow the public defender’s office to determine whether it has a conflict in the case.
McCormack, who is being held at the Sacramento County Main Jail, also faces charges of possession of a firearm in commission of a felony.
Authorities said the shooting happened June 30 after McCormack intervened in an argument between Kert Lackey and a woman who lived at a home in the 5500 block of Monteagle Court in Sacramento.
According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, McCormack and Lackey then had a physical altercation. At some point, authorities say, McCormack shot Lackey multiple times.
Sheriff’s deputies, responding to a report of shots fired at the home, found Lackey near the front door and began life-saving measures. He was pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff’s officials said. McCormack was arrested early the next morning. The woman was not injured.
Sacramento Superior Court records show that McCormack was charged with domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon in 2014, and has an assortment of misdemeanor charges dating back to 1992.
