“
Class standing directly influences cultural capital and people's ability to attain higher education
...” (
Newman,
2012). It is my personal belief that acquiring an education is a task that should rank highly among every individual's priorities. There are countless sayings that profess education to be the single most important factor in maintaining human advancement. In our society we give acclamation and regards to those who have expanded their education beyond the secondary level. Even among the “formally educated” do we see distinctions between those who have the lowest level of post-secondary education (e.g
Associate's) versus those who are at the top of their field (
Master's/Doctoral). So what happens when everyone doesn't have the same opportunities to access the education we as a society value so highly? Disparities in socioeconomic status disparities in education, healthcare, style of living, etc. are not a recent trend ushered in by the
21st century.
Once the ancient river valley civilizations became established, rulers and lawmakers had to figure out ways to divide the citizens in order to maintain social order.
The purpose of this video is to bring awareness to the impact that one's socioeconomic status and [family] cultural capital can have one their ability to obtain a post secondary education. For this video, I interviewed three students:
Vivian Nguyen,
Bryan Rodriguez, and
Jennifer Dunn (for current 21st century perspectives) My goal was for them to think critically about how certain aspects of their lives (primarily their parents'/guardians' level education) influence their desires, thought processes, and ultimately their decision making. Disparities in the
American educational system can become nonexistent once we acknowledge their prominence in our society.
I've also included a clip of a
TED talk about socioeconomic status and education, from
Brussels, Belgium, to show that deficits in education exist across the globe.
