Sir Michael Elias Balcon (19 May 1896 – 17 October 1977) was an English film producer, known for his work with Ealing Studios. Balcon had earlier worked for Gainsborough Pictures, Gaumont British and MGM-British.
Born in Birmingham, Balcon was the youngest son and fourth of five children of Louis Balcon (c. 1858–1946) and his wife, Laura (née Greenberg; c. 1863–1934), Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe who had met in Britain. Growing up in a respectable but impoverished setting, in 1907 Balcon won a scholarship to Birmingham's George Dixon Grammar School, where a plaque is erected, but had to leave in 1913 owing to his family's financial needs. He worked as a jeweller's apprentice, was turned down for service in the First World War because of defective eyesight, and joined the Dunlop Rubber Company's huge plant at Aston Cross in 1915, rising to become personal assistant to the managing director.
After the war, Balcon's friend Victor Saville suggested a partnership to establish a film distribution company. The company, Victory Motion Pictures, led to them settling in London, and an office in Soho was opened in 1921. In 1923, their first feature film was released, the successful melodrama Woman to Woman, starring Clive Brook and Betty Compson and directed by Graham Cutts. They leased Islington Studios and formed the more long-lasting Gainsborough Pictures.
Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer, and actor. Called the King of Pop, his contributions to music and dance, along with his publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades.
The eighth child of the Jackson family, he debuted on the professional music scene along with his elder brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, and Marlon as a member of the Jackson 5 in 1964, and began his solo career in 1971. In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. The music videos for his songs, including those of "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and "Thriller" from his 1982 album Thriller, were credited with breaking down racial barriers and with transforming the medium into an art form and promotional tool. The popularity of these videos helped to bring the then-relatively-new television channel MTV to fame. His 1987 album Bad spawned the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles "I Just Can't Stop Loving You", "Bad", "The Way You Make Me Feel", "Man in the Mirror", and "Dirty Diana", becoming the first album to have five number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. With videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream", he continued to innovate the medium throughout the 1990s, as well as forging a reputation as a touring solo artist. Through stage and video performances, Jackson popularized a number of complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk, to which he gave the name. His distinctive sound and style has influenced numerous artists of various music genres.

"The Guv'nor" (a.k.a. Mister Hobo) was the second of five films to star George Arliss that were made in the UK by Gaumont British, then under the control of Michael Balcon. This is arguably the most obscure of these films in the UK as it has never been shown on tv, or had a VHS or dvd release, which is a shame because its an excellent vehicle for Mr Arliss. Although the plot is rather improbable, Arliss shines as the tramp, affectionately known as "The Guv'nor" who gets mistaken for a rich financier and manages to save a family who helped him from bankruptcy at the hands of a crooked banker, marvelously played by charcter actor Frank Cellier. The film also has a wonderful music score by Arthur Benjamin that adds to the atmosphere. If the copyright holder objects, or if a dvd release i...
George Arliss returned to the UK in 1935 and his last five films were made by Gaumont British whilst under Michael Balcon's leadership. These films were promoted in the US but did not enjoy the same popularity there as when Arliss was under contract to Warner Brothers. "His Lordship", filmed in 1936, gave Arliss a dual role as twin brothers, one of whom comes to the aid of the other who just happens to be Foreign Secretary in the UK government, in a slightly improbable but nonetheless entertaining story. At the time of publication none of the five films made by Arliss in the UK have been released on dvd in the UK, although this one did get a VHS release in the late 1990s. Although the release of a box set seems less likely now, maybe these films will eventually get a proper release.
