Modern Poetry (ENGL 310) with Langdon Hammer
The early poetry of William Butler Yeats is read and interpreted with particular attention paid to Yeats's ambitions as a specifically Irish poet. Yeats's commitment to a poetry of symbol is explored in "The Song of the Wandering Aengus," a fable of poetic vocation. "A Coat," composed at the end of Yeats's struggle to bring about an Irish national theater, shows the poet reconceiving his style and in search of a new audience. "The Fisherman" is read as a revision of "The Song of the Wandering Aengus" which reflects this new set of concerns.

Yeats's middle period is explored, beginning with the middle-aged Yeats's assumption of the role of spokesman for Irish nationalism and the development of his complicated response to nationalist violence. The aestheticization of violence is considered in the poem "Easter, 1916" and briefly in "The Statues." Yeats's conception of the relationship of violence to history, with particular emphasis on the frightening interaction among the divine, the human, and the bestial, is demonstrated in the visionary poems "The Second Coming" and "The Magi," and finally in "Leda and the Swan."

WHEN YOU ARE OLD by William Butler Yeats - FULL Poem | GreatestAudioBooks.com - William Butler Yeats (13 June 1865 – 28 January 1939) was an Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments, in his later years he served as an Irish Senator for two terms. Yeats was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival and, along with Lady Gregory, Edward Martyn, and others, founded the Abbey Theatre, where he served as its chief during its early years. In 1923, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature as the first Irishman so honoured for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation." Emma Stone
Emily Jean "Emma" Stone (born November 6, 1988) is an American actress. She convinced her parents to let her move to Hollywood at the age of fifteen and she made her screen debut in the VHI reality show In Search of the New Partridge Family. (2004), followed by appearances on television series such as Medium, Malcolm in the Middle, and Drive. She made her feature film debut in the comedy Superbad (2007) and had supporting roles in The House Bunny (2008) and Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009). She received further mainstream attention for her role in the comedy Zombieland (2009). She garnered recognition for her leading debut role in the comedy Easy A (2010), for which she received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy.
Following her breakthrough, Stone starred in the romantic comedy-drama Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) and the drama The Help (2011). She had a commercially successful role as Gwen Stacy in The Amazing Spider-Man film series, and voiced the main character in the animated comedy The Croods (2013). In 2014 and 2015, she co-starred in two Woody Allen films: the romantic comedy Magic in the Moonlight and the mystery drama Irrational Man, respectively. She received critical acclaim for her supporting performance in the comedy-drama Birdman (2014), for which she was nominated for the SAG, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Critics' Choice, and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In November 2014, she made her Broadway debut as a replacement in the role of Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret, which she performed until February 2015.

Yeats wrote the introduction for Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali, which was published by the India Society.

In 1923, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature as the first Irishman so honoured for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation." Yeats is generally considered one of the few writers who completed their greatest works after being awarded the Nobel Prize; such works include The Tower (1928) and The Winding Stair and Other Poems (1929). Yeats was a very good friend of American expatriate poet and Bollingen Prize laureate Ezra Pound. Yeats wrote the introduction for Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali, which was published by the India Society.

Altro riconoscimento di grande importanza, quello di essere stato invitato dal Centro Sudi Leopardiani e dal Comune di Recanati, presso il Colle dell’Infinito, il 29 Giugno 2010, in occasione delle Celebrazioni Leopardiane (prima di lui Gassman, Bene, Albertazzi, Lavia, Giannini, Bucci...) a presentare: “Chopin & Leopardi, il Poeta del pianoforte e il Poeta dei poeti”; spettacolo su Giacomo Leopardi che ha visto Carlcacchiani come voce recitante ed ideatore, insieme al maestro Lorenzo Di Bella, pianista di riconosciuta fama. I due protagonisti hanno entusiasmato il folto ed esigente pubblico presente e numerosi sono stati i commenti positivi, tra i quali quello della discendente del poeta, la contessa Olimpia Leopardi. Visto il consenso di pubblico e critica ottenuto dall’ attore, Casa Leopardi gli ha poi chiesto d’interpretare, in sala d’incisione, una selezione di Canti leopardiani. La Giacomo & Giacomo SRL nel 2011 ha editato il cd “O graziosa luna, io mi rammento...” Il motivo di tale “azzardo”, se così si può definire, è ben descritto nella nota introduttiva al cd del Professor Lucio Felici: Sergio Carlacchiani è un artista versatile che da tempo si dedica alla lettura pubblica dei poeti. Nel cimentarsi con i Canti di Leopardi, egli ha lavorato tenacemente sui testi, schivando – come raramente accade – l’enfasi teatrale e calandosi, di volta in volta, nelle “situazioni” delle 18 poesie trascelte. Nel 2014 Carlacchiani è tornato al Colle dell’Infinito per essere protagonista di “A voi gentili anime” recital dedicato al grande poeta recanatese, con le musiche eseguite dal vivo dal Quartetto delle Marche.” Il 29 Luglio , nell’ambito del Futura Festival di Civitanova Marche , presso il Teatro Annibal Caro, ha proposto al pubblico, coadiuvato dal quartetto d’ archi Eudora : E il dì futuro del dì presente… spettacolo anch’esso dedicato a Giacomo Leopardi. Altro riconoscimento di grande importanza, quello di essere stato invitato dal Centro Sudi Leopardiani e dal Comune di Recanati, presso il Colle dell’Infinito, il 29 Giugno 2010, in occasione delle Celebrazioni Leopardiane (prima di lui Gassman, Bene, Albertazzi, Lavia, Giannini, Bucci...) a presentare: “Chopin & Leopardi, il Poeta del pianoforte e il Poeta dei poeti”; spettacolo su Giacomo Leopardi che ha visto Carlcacchiani come voce recitante ed ideatore, insieme al maestro Lorenzo Di Bella, pianista di riconosciuta fama. I due protagonisti hanno entusiasmato il folto ed esigente pubblico presente e numerosi sono stati i commenti positivi, tra i quali quello della discendente del poeta, la contessa Olimpia Leopardi. Visto il consenso di pubblico e critica ottenuto dall’ attore, Casa Leopardi gli ha poi chiesto d’interpretare, in sala d’incisione, una selezione di Canti leopardiani. La Giacomo & Giacomo SRL nel 2011 ha editato il cd “O graziosa luna, io mi rammento...” Il motivo di tale “azzardo”, se così si può definire, è ben descritto nella nota introduttiva al cd del Professor Lucio Felici: Sergio Carlacchiani è un artista versatile che da tempo si dedica alla lettura pubblica dei poeti. Nel cimentarsi con i Canti di Leopardi, egli ha lavorato tenacemente sui testi, schivando – come raramente accade – l’enfasi teatrale e calandosi, di volta in volta, nelle “situazioni” delle 18 poesie trascelte. Nel 2014 Carlacchiani è tornato al Colle dell’Infinito per essere protagonista di “A voi gentili anime” recital dedicato al grande poeta recanatese, con le musiche eseguite dal vivo dal Quartetto delle Marche.” Il 29 Luglio , nell’ambito del Futura Festival di Civitanova Marche , presso il Teatro Annibal Caro, ha proposto al pubblico, coadiuvato dal quartetto d’ archi Eudora : E il dì futuro del dì presente… spettacolo anch’esso dedicato a Giacomo Leopardi. Sempre al poeta dell’Infinito, insieme alla studiosa Loretta Marcon e al chitarrista Daniele Cecconi, Carlacchiani ha presentato a Monte San Giusto il 25 Ottobre 2014, lo spettacolo: “ Comento fatto per noi...
