Eroticism

Eroticism (from the Greek ἔρως, eros—"desire") is a quality that causes sexual feelings, as well as a philosophical contemplation concerning the aesthetics of sexual desire, sensuality and romantic love. That quality may be found in any form of artwork, including painting, sculpture, photography, drama, film, music or literature. It may also be found in advertising. The term may also refer to a state of sexual arousal or anticipation of such – an insistent sexual impulse, desire, or pattern of thoughts.

As French novelist Honoré de Balzac stated, eroticism is dependent not just upon an individual's sexual morality, but also the culture and time in which an individual resides.

Definitions

Because the nature of what is erotic is fluid, early definitions of the term attempted to conceive eroticism as some form of sensual or romantic love or as the human sex drive (libido); for example, the Encyclopédie of 1755 states that the erotic "is an epithet which is applied to everything with a connection to the love of the sexes; one employs it particularly to characterize...a dissoluteness, an excess". However, because eroticism is wholly dependent on the viewer's culture and personal tastes pertaining to what, exactly, defines the erotic, critics have often confused eroticism with pornography, going so far as to say: "[Eroticism] is simply high-class pornography; better produced, better conceived, better executed, better packaged, designed for a better class of consumer." This confusion, as Lynn Hunt writes, "demonstrate the difficulty of drawing...a clear generic demarcation between the erotic and the pornographic": indeed arguably "the history of the separation of pornography from eroticism...remains to be written".

Chris Cornell

Chris Cornell (born Christopher John Boyle; July 20, 1964) is an American rock musician and singer-songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist, primary songwriter and rhythm guitarist for Seattle rock band Soundgarden and as former lead vocalist and songwriter for the supergroup Audioslave. He is also known for his numerous solo works and soundtrack contributions since 1991, and as founder and frontman for Temple of the Dog, the one-off tribute band dedicated to his friend the late Andrew Wood.

Cornell is also known for his role as one of the architects of the 1990s grunge movement, for his extensive catalog as a songwriter and for his near four octave vocal range as well as his powerful vocal belting technique. He has released four solo studio albums, Euphoria Morning (1999), Carry On (2007), Scream (2009), Higher Truth (2015) and live album Songbook (2011). Cornell received a Golden Globe Award nomination for his song "The Keeper" which appeared in the film Machine Gun Preacher and co-wrote and performed the theme song to the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006), "You Know My Name". He was voted "Rock's Greatest Singer" by readers of Guitar World, ranked 4th in the list of "Heavy Metal's All-Time Top 100 Vocalists" by Hit Parader, 9th in the list of "Best Lead Singers of All Time" by Rolling Stone, and 12th in MTV's "22 Greatest Voices in Music".

The Erotic

The Erotic is a specialized term coined by writer and educator Audre Lorde in "Uses of the Erotic: Erotic as Power". In her essay, the Erotic is described as a source of personal power and political power. According to her it is often confused with the pornographic and often seen as suspicious in a patriarchal society. The word 'erotic' is derived from the Greek word eros. Eros personifies "love in all its aspects".

The Erotic as personal power

According to Audre Lorde, the Erotic, not to be confused with eroticism, is a powerful feminine force of personal power within each of us. The Erotic is a vital and deeply felt resource that rises from the most mysterious parts of the self. Lorde suggests that, "the erotic is a measure between the beginnings of our sense of self and the chaos of our strongest feelings". It is an inspiring sense of fulfillment, pleasure and completion, that can infiltrate every area of life, including the bedroom, allowing one to live a life of wholeness and profound satisfaction. As Audre Lorde says "there is, for me, no difference between writing a good poem and moving into the sunlight against the body of a woman I love". The Erotic is a soulful way of loving, engaging, reclaiming, honoring, embracing and living life. When reclaimed and honored, the Erotic is experienced as a source of true feeling through the vitality of living a deeply engaged and relational life.
