West Virginia

West Virginia ⁱ/ˌwɛst vərˈdʒɪnjə/ is a state located in the Appalachian region of the Southern United States. It is bordered by Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, Ohio to the northwest, Pennsylvania to the north (and, slightly, east), and Maryland to the northeast. West Virginia is the 41st largest by area and the 38th most populous of the 50 United States. The capital and largest city is Charleston.

West Virginia became a state following the Wheeling Conventions of 1861, in which delegates from some Unionist counties of northwestern Virginia decided to break away from Virginia during the American Civil War, although they included many secessionist counties in the new state. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20, 1863, and was a key Civil War border state. West Virginia was the only state to form by separating from a Confederate state, the first to separate from any state since Maine separated from Massachusetts, and was one of two states formed during the American Civil War (the other being Nevada, which separated from Utah Territory).

West Virginia Route 101

West Virginia Route 101 is an unsigned 1-mile (1.6 km) long north–south state highway in the City of Huntington in Cabell County, West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at U.S. Route 60 (31st Street). The northern terminus is at US 60 (Third Avenue).

From 31st Street, WV 101 follows Eighth Avenue west to 29th Street, where WV 101 turns north to follow 29th Street to Third Avenue.

History

WV 101 was part of US 60 until US 60 was moved two blocks to the east in 1990.

West Virginia Route 26

West Virginia Route 26 is a north–south state highway located within Preston County in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The southern terminus of the route is at U.S. Route 50 in Fellowsville. The northern terminus is at the Pennsylvania state line northeast of Glade Farms, where WV 26 continues as Pennsylvania Route 281.

Slab Fork is the birthplace of Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Bill Withers, who wrote and recorded popular songs such as "Ain't No Sunshine", "Lean on Me", "Just the Two of Us", "Use Me" and "Lovely Day".

Doris Payne, a lifelong jewel thief, was born in Slab Fork in 1930. She began her career as a teenager after her family moved to Cleveland, Ohio.

Slab Fork

The Slab Fork is a tributary of the Guyandotte River, 15.1 miles (24.3 km) long, in southern West Virginia in the United States. Via the Guyandotte and Ohio rivers, it is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River, draining an area of 35.36 square miles (91.6 km²) in a mainly rural area on the unglaciated portion of the Allegheny Plateau.

The Slab Fork rises in Raleigh County, approximately 2 miles (3.2 km) south of Lester and 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of Sophia, and initially flows generally southwestward through the communities of Slab Fork and Hotchkiss into eastern Wyoming County, where it turns southward and flows through the communities of Maben, Pierpont, and Otsego, to the city of Mullens, where it flows into the Guyandotte River from the north. Between Slab Fork and Mullens, the stream is paralleled by West Virginia Route 54.

According to 1992 data from the United States Geological Survey, approximately 95% of the Slab Fork watershed was forested; approximately 2% was used for agriculture; and approximately 1% was used for commercial or mining purposes.
