4. SOUNDBITE: (
French)
Elisabeth Guigou, Socialist member of parliament:
"
On the contrary we will weaken (
European defence), because we will give additional military means to
NATO, military means which would have been welcomed for European defence, outside the
Atlantic Alliance. For me that's the main problem."
5. Wide of Guigou being interviewed
6. SOUNDBITE: (French) Elisabeth Guigou, Socialist member of parliament:
"The possibilities of enlargement to include
Ukraine and
Georgia without wondering at all about the consequences to relations with
Russia, are a big problem, because these are two countries, which unlike
Central and
Eastern European countries, were totally part of the
Soviet Union. It is an important
difference compared to
Poland,
Hungary or others. All these issues are completely swept under the carpet and I think that regarding relations with Russia, and the existence of the European defence there are important topics that we should obviously talk about during a parliamentary debate here, followed by a vote."

Jacques Myard,
UMP ruling party member of parliament being interviewed by journalists inside the National Assembly
14. SOUNDBITE: (
English) Jacques Myard, UMP ruling party member of parliament:
"From a military
point of view, there is no need to join because when you say, when they say that our influence will be greater I say no: it won't be greater, because let's say the software of NATO is that NATO is an
American machine and will be the same way. So if we are in we won't be able let's say to change the nature of NATO as such. If you want to change that then we should discuss it before rejoining NATO integration committees."
15.
Media and MPs inside the National Assembly.
16. SOUNDBITE: (French)
Patrick Ollier, UMP ruling party member of parliament:
"
We are paying our way, we have soldiers in NATO, in reality we are not reintegrating back into NATO, we have never left it. We are coming back in to the structure of command, which is to say that today we have all the disadvantages, not the advantages. We are in
Afghanistan with NATO, we were in
Kosovo with NATO.
Today it seems totally natural that we should have a place in directing NATO."
