Kingdom of Hearts (Shiite Imam Shrine in Iran hosts millions of pilgrims)
The city of Mashhad serves as the spiritual capital of Iran. This city owes its significance to Imam Reza’s shrine which is the burial site of Ali Ibn Musa al-Ridha, the seventh descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the eighth imam in the Twelver Shi’i tradition.
Imam Reza’s Shrine complex, which is the largest mosque in the world by dimension and the second largest by capacity, is located at the heart of the city. The shrine attracts almost 30 million pilgrims from around the world every year. And to facilitate the visitors and run the complex there are countless devoted volunteers from all walks of life. In this exclusive Press TV documentary, we will visit the holy shrine in Mashhad and meet some of the people who have dedicated their lives to serve there.

In this video, you can see what appears to be men of the Nigerian army firing scores of bullets and the wailing cries from the victims. Violence erupted yesterday (13th December, 2015) in Kaduna and some parts of northern Nigeria after the convoy of General Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff, was attacked by Shiite members in Kaduna state. The attack took place while Buratai was on his way to pay homage on the Emir of Zazzau and attend the Passing Out Parade of 73 Regular Recruits Intake of Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria.
Members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as Shiite, have claimed that at least 500 of their colleagues have allegedly been killed by soldiers. The group blamed the Army authorities for the loss of lives in Zaria, Kaduna State, north-west Nigeria and called on the international community and human rights groups to probe the killings.
Nigeria is in the middle of an ongoing war with the notorious terror group, Boko Haram in the North Eastern part of the country. Boko Haram has killed more than 10000 Nigerians in the last 5 years.
There has also been agitations in the South, majorly in the South-Eastern part by member of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) calling for secession. Over 12 peaceful demonstrators have been killed by the government security forces. The leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention for over two months. His detention has heightened widespread protest majorly among the Igbo speaking ethnic group. International bodies and resource persons have suggested a peaceful referendum to end the agitations.

STORYLINE
Thousands of Shiites gathered at ceremonies across the Muslim world on Saturday, to mark the annual festival of Ashura, in which Shiites mourn the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Islam's prophet Muhammad.
Imam Hussein died in a battle in 680 against the leader of what became the Sunni branch of Islam.
The battle took place in Karbala, which is located in present day Iraq.
Security was especially tight as hundreds of thousands of Shiites beat their heads and chests in unison and whipped themselves with chains in Karbala, with 30-thousand policemen and soldiers deployed in the city, including reinforcements from Baghdad.
Afghan Shiite Muslims also celebrated the festival by flagellating themselves.
Most of the Ashura rituals involve public expressions of grief with Shiite Muslims flagellating themselves with chains and beating drums.
During Ashura celebrations, Afghan President Hamid Karzai called for a "movement against those who are defaming Islam and killing Muslims."
"I express my condolences to all the people on this mourning day and I hope today's mourning will bring a movement for our future," said Karzai.
Iranians also took to the street in Tehran.
The parade was protected by a massive police security operation.

Shia Islam
Shia (/ˈʃiːə/; Arabic: شيعة Shīʿah), an abbreviation of Shīʻatu ʻAlī (شيعة علي, "followers of Ali"), is a branch of Islam which holds that the Islamic prophet Muhammad's proper successor as Caliph was his son-in-law and cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib. Shia Islam primarily contrasts with Sunni Islam, whose adherents believe that Muhammad's father-in-law Abu Bakr was his proper successor.
Adherents of Shia Islam are called Shias or the Shi'a as a collective or Shi'i individually. Shia Islam is the second-largest branch of Islam: in 2009, Shia Muslims constituted 10–13% of the world's Muslim population.Twelver Shia (Ithnā'ashariyyah) is the largest branch of Shia Islam. In 2012 it was estimated that perhaps 85 percent of Shias were Twelvers.
Shia Islam is based on the Quran and the message of the Islamic prophet Muhammad attested in hadith recorded by the Shia, and certain books deemed sacred to the Shia (Nahj al-Balagha). Shia consider Ali to have been divinely appointed as the successor to Muhammad, and as the first Imam. The Shia also extend this "Imami" doctrine to Muhammad's family, the Ahl al-Bayt ("the People of the House"), and certain individuals among his descendants, known as Imams, who they believe possess special spiritual and political authority over the community, infallibility, and other divinely-ordained traits. Although there are myriad Shia subsects, modern Shia Islam has been divided into three main groupings: Twelvers, Ismailis and Zaidis, with Twelver Shia being the largest and most influential group among Shia.

Nigeria is in the middle of an ongoing war with the notorious terror group, Boko Haram in the North Eastern part of the country. Boko Haram has killed more than 10000 Nigerians in the last 5 years.
There has also been agitations in the South, majorly in the South-Eastern part by member of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) calling for secession. Over 12 peaceful demonstrators have been killed by the government security forces. The leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has been in detention for over two months. His detention has heightened widespread protest majorly among the Igbo speaking ethnic group. International bodies and resource persons have suggested a peaceful referendum to end the agitations.

STORYLINE
Thousands of Shiites gathered at ceremonies across the Muslim world on Saturday, to mark the annual festival of Ashura, in which Shiites mourn the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Islam's prophet Muhammad.
Imam Hussein died in a battle in 680 against the leader of what became the Sunni branch of Islam.
The battle took place in Karbala, which is located in present day Iraq.
Security was especially tight as hundreds of thousands of Shiites beat their heads and chests in unison and whipped themselves with chains in Karbala, with 30-thousand policemen and soldiers deployed in the city, including reinforcements from Baghdad.
Afghan Shiite Muslims also celebrated the festival by flagellating themselves.
Most of the Ashura rituals involve public expressions of grief with Shiite Muslims flagellating themselves with chains and beating drums.
During Ashura celebrations, Afghan President Hamid Karzai called for a "movement against those who are defaming Islam and killing Muslims."
"I express my condolences to all the people on this mourning day and I hope today's mourning will bring a movement for our future," said Karzai.
Iranians also took to the street in Tehran.
The parade was protected by a massive police security operation.

However, Prof. Wistrich also illustrates that it is becoming apparent that antagonism between the Sunni-Shiite factions has created a strategic rift for Israel. The next question is what options are available for Israel in this conflict?
Prof. Bernard Lewis (Princeton University)
In his presentation, Professor Lewis discusses the difference between the Sunnis and the Shiites and its significance in early and recent history. He illustrates the main difference, which is politically based in the succession over the Islamic community. Unlike the Prophets of Judaism and Christianity, Muhammad was extremely successful in conquering his promised lands and spreading the word of Islam. Therefore, there was a problem of succession - who would be the next ruler of the Muslim state? Shiites believe in the dynastic principle that the Caliphs will be descendants of Mohammed himself, becoming the opposition within the Islamic world, and the minority Muslim population. Whereas the Sunnis believe in a form of election. Lewis argues that the biggest issues have arisen in areas where Shiites dominate (e.g. Iran) or where they exist side-by-side with Sunnis. Lewis explains that there may be a potential ally in the Sunni Muslims who oppose the Shiite majority Iran. Moreover, the attitudes towards Jews and Israel, is generally far worse with Shiites than Sunnis.
Dr. Dore Gold (President of Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs)
In his presentation, Dr. Gold discusses the question of "where Israel should put its chips", i.e. with the Sunni or Shiite muslims. He explores Israel's complicated history with the two factions, the current circumstances and potential policy moves towards addressing the conflicts. He recommends discrete channels of communication with other Arab countries to address the Iranian problem, rather than a large ceremonial conference.
Mr. Efraim Halevy (Head of the Shasha Center for Strategic Studies, Hebrew University; Former Head of the Mossad)
In his presentation, Mr. Halevy traces Israel's various alliances and attempts to engineer the Arab world. For example, Israel's first alliance of the periphery. This alliance was erected between Israel and countries that were not at the heart of the Middle East, through common interests, such as defence, economic interests, etc. This secret alliance was developed between Israel and states such as Iran, Turkey and Morocco. However, during the 1970s, these relations collapsed particularly due to the Yom Kippur War and the Iranian Revolution. In the Iran-Iraq war Israel again tried to create alliances. Specifically, to aid the Iranians, with the support of the U.S. by providing military technologies. However, this backfired after the Iranians discovered the U.S. was also supporting the Iraqis. Mr. Halevy concludes that Israel's attempts to engineer the Arab world, so that it can utilize the Sunni-Shiite divisions in a way that could benefit Israel was out of its capabilities (and the United States' as well). However, he argues that they were successful in breaking the unity in the Arab world - particularly the political impetus of the Arab League.
