This is not a 100% replica, since Scholz had to use mics, preamps, attenuators, all that nitty gritty. But this does cover the essential elements of the original tone, simplifying the setup using modern gear.
The story is: After many hours of hacking away at different overdrive tones with a big 31-band EQ and never quite getting the Boston sound, I very accidentally stumbled upon Tom Scholz's original secret recipe when I hooked my DigiTech into my friend's Marshall with the cabinet simulator enabled:
guitar -- overdrive and cabinet -- 6-band EQ -- light distortion and cabinet
The secret is having the first cabinet in the signal chain and the EQ in the middle right before the second amp. The old tales say Scholz had a cranked Marshall stuffed in a closet, mic'd and then ran through the rest of his gear and finally out another amp to make that soaring Boston tone. And of course, the EQ setting Scholz used is necessary too, and I will show it to you in the video.
This is all done digitally (except the pedal of course) so I can record direct for you to hear, but I use this setup plugged into a 15W Crate at home and it sounds juuuuust awesome.
The names of the songs I play are Party, Rock N Roll Band, and Feelin' Satisfied.

Donald Thomas "Tom" Scholz (born March 10, 1947) is an American rock musician, songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, inventor, and mechanical engineer, best known as the founder of the band Boston. He is also the inventor of the Rockman guitar amplifier. As noted by Allmusic, he is 'a notoriously "un-rock n' roll" figure who never enjoyed the limelight of being a performer' but instead concentrated almost exclusively on his music. After achieving commercial success with Boston, Scholz has spent much of his time working with charities.
Tom Scholz was born in Toledo, Ohio and raised in the suburb of Ottawa Hills. His father, Don Scholz, was a homebuilder who garnered considerable wealth from his designs of prefabricated luxury houses and founded Scholz Homes Inc.
His mother Olive was valedictorian of her class then became an architectural designer and a landscape architect.
As a child, Scholz studied classical piano. He also had a penchant for tinkering with everything from go-carts to model airplanes and was always building or designing. A top student and a member of the varsity basketball team, he graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1965. Prior to his musical career, Scholz received both a bachelor's degree (1969) and a master's degree (1970) in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked for Polaroid Corporation as a senior product design engineer. Scholz would then reside in Boston.

This is not a 100% replica, since Scholz had to use mics, preamps, attenuators, all that nitty gritty. But this does cover the essential elements of the original tone, simplifying the setup using modern gear.
The story is: After many hours of hacking away at different overdrive tones with a big 31-band EQ and never quite getting the Boston sound, I very accidentally stumbled upon Tom Scholz's original secret recipe when I hooked my DigiTech into my friend's Marshall with the cabinet simulator enabled:
guitar -- overdrive and cabinet -- 6-band EQ -- light distortion and cabinet
The secret is having the first cabinet in the signal chain and the EQ in the middle right before the second amp. The old tales say Scholz had a cranked Marshall stuffed in a closet, mic'd and then ran through the rest of his gear and finally out another amp to make that soaring Boston tone. And of course, the EQ setting Scholz used is necessary too, and I will show it to you in the video.
This is all done digitally (except the pedal of course) so I can record direct for you to hear, but I use this setup plugged into a 15W Crate at home and it sounds juuuuust awesome.
The names of the songs I play are Party, Rock N Roll Band, and Feelin' Satisfied.
