Gilles Peterson (born 28 September 1964, Caen, France) is a British-based DJ, record collector and record label owner residing in London. Via his labels Acid Jazz, Talkin' Loud, and since 2006, Brownswood Recordings. Brownswood Recordings have produced artists such as Mala, Ghostpoet, Owiny Sigoma Band, working with artists such as Lefto, Simbad, Four Tet and many more.

Gilles has been associated with the careers of well-known artists of the 1990s such as Erykah Badu, Roni Size and Jamiroquai.

After starting out on pirate radio, and having shows on various legal London-based radio stations, most notably Kiss FM dance music station, he was recruited to the BBC's youth-oriented Radio 1 in 1998. Since 2012, he hosts a 3-hour BBC 6 Music Saturday show, 3-6pm. Peterson's 'Musical Vitamins' range from Jazz, Hiphop, Afro, Electronica, house & Soul featuring visits and guest mixes from such luminaries as Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Brainfeeder boss Flying Lotus, and soul legend, Bobby Womack.

High-heeled footwear

High-heeled footwear (often abbreviated as high heels or simply heels) is footwear that raises the heel of the wearer's foot significantly higher than the toes. When both the heel and the toes are raised equal amounts, as in a platform shoe, it is technically not considered to be a high heel; however, there are also high-heeled platform shoes. High heels tend to give the aesthetic illusion of longer, more slender legs. High heels come in a wide variety of styles, and the heels are found in many different shapes, including stiletto, pump (court shoe), block, tapered, blade, and wedge.

According to the Spine Health Institute. 28% of women will never wear high heels in their lifetime, meanwhile, 72% of women wear high heels at some point. Statistics of women wearing high heels daily annually have fluctuated between 1986 to 2003, from 68% to 39%. Women that wear high heels daily according to age, were split into three ranges: 49% of women 18-24 years old; 42% of women 25-49 years old and 34% of women ages 50 and older. Women also wear heels for different reasons, such as: special occasions (77%), parties and dinner (50%), dancing (33%), and to work (31%).

Drum and bass

Drum and bass (/ˈdrʌm ənd ˈbeɪs/) (also written as drum 'n' bass and commonly abbreviated as D&B, DnB or D'n'B) is a genre of electronic music which emerged from rave and oldschool jungle scenes in England during the early 1990s. The style is often characterized by fast breakbeats (typically between 150–180 beats per minute) with heavy bass and sub-bass lines,sampled sources, and synthesizers.

The popularity of drum and bass at its commercial peak ran parallel to several other homegrown dance styles in the UK including big beat and hard house. Drum n bass incorporates a number of scenes and styles. A major influence on jungle and drum and bass was the original Jamaican dub and reggae sound. Another feature of the style is the complex syncopation of the drum tracks' breakbeat.

Drum and bass subgenres include breakcore, ragga jungle, hardstep, darkstep, techstep, Neurofunk, ambient drum and bass, liquid funk, deep, drumfunk, funkstep, sambass dnbnoise and drill and bass. From its roots in the UK, the style has established itself around the world. Drum and bass has influenced many other genres like hip hop, big beat, dubstep, house music, trip hop, ambient music, techno, rock and pop. Drum and bass is dominated by a small group of record labels. The major international music labels have shown very little interest in the drum and bass scene. Drum and Bass remains most popular in the UK, but has developed scenes all around the world, in countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, New Zealand, Canada and Australia.

Benji Boko

Benjamin Gordon (born 5 October 1986), known professionally as Benji Boko, is an English DJ and producer known for his unique live remixes and highly energetic shows.

Early life and career

Benji Boko grew up in Brighton, East Sussex. He first started to get interested in remixing from a young age when he used to store TV theme tunes on his computer and tried to mix them into each other. It was when he heard DJ Yoda for the first time that he realised that someone else was doing the same thing which convinced him to continue to explore and improve his style of mixing. When he was 18, Benji bought his first turntables and began to enhance his live mixing skills at friend's house parties in Brighton and eventually hassling clubs and promoters to allow him to play.

In 2008 Benji Boko moved to Leeds to attend Leeds College of Music graduating with a BA(Hons) in Music Production. He managed to get a regular DJ slot at HIFI in Leeds. He played there for three years where he continued to experiment and improve his live mixing ability. In 2011 he graduated from Leeds College of Music and returned to Brighton where he used what he learnt in his three years in Leeds and continued to perform as a DJ.

Tru Thoughts

Tru Thoughts is an independent record label. It was formed in Brighton, UK in 1999 by Robert Luis of Deeds Plus Thoughts and Paul Jonas. It became, in one decade, one of the most famous and well respected labels in independent music world.

History

In September 1999, after the success of their night club the "Phonic: hoop and Shake Yer Wig", Paul Jonas & Robert Luis, two music-obsessed friends, decided to launch their own label.

From the improvised 'office', under Robert Luis' stairs, the new Tru Thoughts records started its history with their first 12" EP "Alarming Frequency". There followed many releases which step by step built on the success of the label, including Bonobo's Animal Magic (July 2000), Quantic's The 5th Exotic (June 2001) and Jon Kennedy’s debut album We’re Just Waiting For You Now (July 2001).

In 2005 Tru Thoughts were awarded Label Of The Year at the annual Gilles Peterson Worldwide Awards.

Will Holland, widely known as Quantic, has released under a number of monikers on the label; including projects such as Quantic, The Quantic Soul Orchestra, Flowering Inferno, The Limp Twins, Quantic and his Combo Barbaro and his 2012 collaboration Quantic & Alice Russell with the Combo Barbaro.
