They’re all the same. You go there, get drunk, do a little bit of work between hangovers and collect your degree, right? WRONG. Each of the 100+ institutions that offer a university education in the UK are all unique, and offer their own experiences. The characteristics and qualities of universities vary wildly, and it’s super, super important to ensure that you choose the university that’s going to be right for you. The importance of choosing the right university cannot be understated. In this video, I’m going to be outlining just a few reasons why choosing the right university is so critically important. The Importance of Choosing the Right University. Reason 1: It’s a Financial Decision. A HUGE Financial Decision. At the age of 18, it’s hard to appreciate the true ramifications of the cost of university. You won’t really give a second thought about the idea of having to eventually pay back the fees years down the line. You’re planning on landing an incredibly well-paid job by then, so why worry? Wellll…Consider your 30 year-old self. You’ll still be paying a hefty portion of your wages on a “graduate tax” for a university degree that might not even be relevant to the profession that you’ve chosen to enter into. That kind of scenario shows the true impact of university fees. Attending university should be treated with as much respect and forethought as all of the other major financial decisions in your life, such as getting a mortgage for a house, or buying a car. It shouldn’t be entered into lightly. These fees will affect you for many years after your graduation. Choosing the right university will ensure that you’ll at least be getting decent “bang for your buck” for these huge costs, and hopefully you’ll be able to look back upon it as a worthy investment for wherever your degree took you in life. Reason 2: It will affect the next few Years of your Life. This can’t be understated. This decision will have a huge impact on the next few years of your life. it’s going to determine where you’ll live, and also what you will be doing for the majority of your time for the next three years or so. That’s why choosing the right university is so crucially important. If you don’t choose somewhere that you enjoy, then you’re setting yourself up for a potentially very long and gruelling three years. Reason 3: Degrees aren’t what they used to be. I’m not intending to scare anyone off from getting a degree. They really can be incredible tools towards getting high-paid and high-quality jobs. However, few people can dispute the fact that degrees aren’t what they used to be. Whether you like it or not, Tony Blair’s Labour government pushed for everyone to attend university, and the result of that is that around 40% of people now go to university. Naturally, if half of all people now obtain a qualification that only a fraction of the population used to achieve, then employers won’t be as comparatively impressed, since it will be less rare and ‘special’. You could argue that this is a good thing for society, as it helps to increase social mobility. But it also means that the days of being handed a cushy graduate job after you graduate are long gone. As a result, you really have to make your choice of university count. Choosing the right university will ensure that you’re being provided with the knowledge and skills to enable you as a unique individual to flourish in whatever path you wish to take.
