In 1990 the government of Trinidad and Tobago declared that October 14 would mark the observance of a 'Day of Recognition' for the indigenous/amerindian/first people of the islands.
Several South American countries declared October 12, the day on which Columbus landed in the Americas in 1492, as a Day of Resistance. To commemorate indigenous resistance to the social destruction which ensued from this event.
In Trinidad it commemorates the defeat of the Spanish in 1637 by the Nepuyo leader Hierreyma and his allies, the Dutch and other indigenous tribes.
We remember the battles at Mucurapo, St Joseph, Arena and Caura too.
A smoke ceremony is led by Paiman Cristo Adonis at the Hyarima statue in Arima and is usually attended by members of the Santa Rosa Carib Community. Cousins from Suriname, Guyana, Puerto Rico, St Vincent and Canada are also invited to participate.
These exchanges are important to our communities are we understand more and more how connected we all are.
The music used in this piece was provided by a visiting group from Suriname, who sang as we walked through the streets of Arima.

The Luk Makoo house is a calibration of different ancient American building techniques integrated with modern amenities and conveniences ( plumbing, hot and cold shower, electricity, sewage,) into one structure. The indigenous peoples of the Americas are the descendants of the pre-Columbian inhabitants of North and South America. Pueblos indígenas (indigenous peoples) is a common term in Spanish-speaking countries. Aborigen (aboriginal/native) is used in Argentina, whereas "Amerindian" is used in Quebec, The Guianas, and the English-speaking Caribbean. Indigenous peoples are commonly known in Canada as Aboriginal peoples, which include First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. Indigenous peoples of the United States are commonly known as Native Americans or American Indians, and Alaska Natives.
According to the prevailing New World migration model, migrations of humans from Asia (in particular North Asia) to the Americas took place via Beringia, a land bridge which connected the two continents across what is now the Bering Strait. The majority of experts agree that the earliest migration via Beringia took place at least 13,500 years ago, with disputed evidence that people had migrated into the Americas much earlier, up to 40,000 years ago. These early Paleo-Indians spread throughout the Americas, diversifying into many hundreds of culturally distinct nations and tribes. According to the oral histories of many of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, they have been living there since their genesis, described by a wide range of creation myths.

Miners in Myanmar have discovered a mammoth-sized chunk of jade stone, IFL Science reported Monday.The jade chunk, the report said, was discovered in a remote mine in Kachin State in the north of the country. It measures 5.8 meters (19 feet) long and weighs a cool 175 tonnes (192 US tons), the BBC reported. It’s believed to be worth a mind-blowing $170 million ... jadeite and nephrite.
