My name's Michael and I'm the Marketing Manager for Wild Frontiers. I'm here at the magnificent site of Persepolis in Iran. I've been in Iran for two weeks now and so far I've been enchanted by this fascinating country. The ancient desert city of Yazd is located within the centre of the State Of Iran and is one of the country’s oldest cities, set like a string of pearls along the Kavir coast. It is also a centre for the followers of the Zarathustra faith, the pious predecessors of Islam who fled to the city to escape Arab persecution. A small square is situated in the middle of the Old Town district of Fahadan, flanked by historic buildings such as a prison where, according to legend, Alexander The Great held captive various Achaemenid dignitaries and which was later used as a school. The narrow streets of the historic Old Town mainly consist of mud-built buildings with partially covered corridors, domes and numerous wind towers. The maze of narrow streets in ...

When it comes to Tehran, it's impossible to avoid politics and easy to overlook the Iranian city's thriving culinary scene. In our first installment of The MUNCHIES Guide to Tehran, our host Gelareh Kiazand introduces us to the bustling street food offerings in the city. We begin our journey at the capital city's Grand Bazaar, since that's where commodities first arrive. Gelareh beelines for the market's food stands, where she samples dried fruits and nuts while waiting out the line at Moslem Restaurant, frequented by up to 5,000 kebab connoisseurs daily—well worth it for her favorite tah chin. At the more modest and bygone Tajrish Bazaar, she's the proverbial kid in a candy store, wading through copper and carpet vendors in search of sweet snacks, such as grape molasses and lavasak (fru...

Scientific progress in a country facing a barrage of economic sanctions; Iran, a country with a predominantly young population in the heart of a region rich with natural resources coveted by energy thirsty western countries. Over the past three decades, the country has fought an eight-year long war and had to deal with increasingly strange and punitive measures leveled against it by its enemies. But this is a resilient nation, uniting around its leadership in times of war, be it military or scientific. In the same spirit and against all the odds, Iranians have mobilized to improve their country's global ranking in science. In its 2012 ranking, Scopus, a bibliographic database owned by Elsevier, an Amsterdam-based company that publishes medical and scientific literature, ranked Iran, ...

On February 11, 1979, the monarchy of the US-backed Pahlavi regime in Iran was overthrown after months of public unrest and protest that led to the victory of the Islamic Revolution. Thirty seven years have passed since those momentous days, and the first and foremost fruit of the revolution remains the notion of “independence”. The main motto of the Revolution revolved around negating alien dominance, be it from the West or the East. The history of colonial interests in Iran is clearly linked to the country’s vast oil and gas resources. The Islamic Revolution in 1979 happened because people had become fed up with a system that exhibited weakness and subservience toward foreign governments, especially Western ones and their interference in the country’s internal and political affairs.
