English/Nat
The United States has airlifted former warlord Roosevelt Johnson out of Liberia to end a week-old standoff that began when he took refuge inside the American Embassy.
A helicopter swooped down on a small landing pad at the back of the sprawling embassy compound in Monrovia on Friday, picked up Johnson and ferried him away amid heavily armed protection.
A second helicopter arrived shortly after to pick up several other people.
Heavy security surrounded the U-S embassy in Liberia on Friday.
Nigerian ECOMOG troops and American security guards joined forces to secure the building in the capital Monrovia.
The security was put in place so former warlord Roosevelt Johnson could be airlifted out of the country.
The aim of the airlift was to end a week-old standoff that began when Johnson took refuge inside the American Embassy.
Johnson, Taylor's main rival, had been holed up at the embassy since Liberian soldiers tried to arrest him last week on charges of treason.
Johnson fled to the compound, and was negotiating with American officials outside when Liberian soldiers apparently fired on his group.
At least three of Johnson's supporters were killed and two Americans were injured in the scramble to get inside the embassy.
Johnson's group forced their way through a gate during the shooting and, although the embassy did not want Johnson in the compound in the first place, it was forced to protect him.
Fearing another round of fighting, security has been greatly increased at the embassy and most diplomats have been evacuated.
U-S military reinforcements were sent in to help shore up the embassy's defences.
Taylor's spokesman Reginald Goodridge said he hoped the United States would cooperate with Liberia in bringing Johnson to trial.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"So if they (U-S) were to fly Mr Johnson out to another country, we have no capacity to stop that. He is on their territory for now, but I am sure something will be done later on to make him available to this government for the trial when the trial begins."
SUPER CAPTION: Reginald Goodridge, Spokesman for the Liberian President
A helicopter swooped down on a small landing pad at the back of the sprawling embassy compound, picked up Johnson and ferried him away amid heavily armed protection.
A second helicopter arrived shortly after to pick up several other members of his entourage.
Watching the airlift was Acting U-S Ambassador to Liberia John Bauman, ECOMOG commander Timothy Shelpidi, and a Liberian government representative.
The helicopters were supplied by a Nigerian-led peacekeeping force.
In Washington, U-S officials said the helicopters would fly Johnson to neighbouring Sierra Leone en route to a third country that was not disclosed.
The evacuation came after days of talks between U-S officials in Washington and Liberian President, Charles Taylor's government.
Taylor urged the United States to hand Johnson over.
But the president's spokesman said on Thursday there would be no effort to block Johnson's evacuation.
American officials earlier indicated that the dispute might be resolved by flying Johnson to a neutral country.
Officials said they were concerned Johnson would not receive a fair trial in Liberia.
The crisis began on September 18th when Liberian troops stormed Johnson's home and tried to arrest the former rebel leader.
Gun, rocket and mortar battles erupted in the capital, and at least 47 people were killed.
It was not the first time a move by Taylor to arrest his longtime foe erupted into violence and embroiled the U-S Embassy.
At that time, Johnson found shelter in the U-S Embassy, then flew out of the country in an American helicopter and fled to Ghana.

Liberia lurched further into anarchy Thursday as West African leaders dimmed hopes for peace by canceling emergency talks and issuing only a series of recommendations on how to end the fighting.
Heavy battles rocked the Liberian capital and spread to the diplomatic section of Mamba Point, where bullets flew down deserted streets near the American Embassy and grenade and mortar blasts thundered through the air.
Armed fighters roam the streets of Monrovia.
Bodies lie strewn over the road - a clear indication that the emergency peace talks have ended in failure.
Hopes for a truce have dimmed again following the breakdown of peace talks and fighting has broken out among rival factions again.
Sporadic gunfire was heard throughout the capital on Wednesday.
West African leaders cancelled the talks after most of the key players failed to show up.
A set of recommendations was issued by the nine members of the Economic Community for West African States.
They include an immediate cease fire and reinstatement of ousted faction leader Roosevelt Johnson.
But so far nothing has been resolved.
Gunmen loyal to Liberia's main warlord Charles Taylor have placed the head of an ethnic Krahn fighter on a table at a roadblock in central Monrovia's Benson Street.
It looks out over the city centre buffer zone.
The gunmen said the head belonged to a member of the celebrated Butt-Naked Brigade captured in fighting on Monday.
The body, with a bullet wound in the neck, lay in the street 100 metres away.
The corpse of another captive further up the hill had been partially burned.
The Butt-Naked Brigade gets its name from its fighters' preference for fighting with no or few clothes.
This church inside the Barclay training centre now houses refugees seeking shelter from the fighting.
It was attacked on May 6th.
The Barclay training centre is the headquarters of Roosevelt Johnson's forces.
These are the lucky ones who have escaped with their lives.
Others are being treated in hospital.
The Chief of staff LPC General W.B. Quiah does not believe Charles Taylor has any intention of honouring the ceasefire.
SOUNDBITE:
"From our side we say the ceasefire can go but from Mr. Taylor's side for each time he asks for a ceasefire he says there's a ceasefire he means he's mobilising his men to come and attack more."
SUPER CAPTION: General W.B. Quiah - Chief of staff LPC

Forces loyal to Liberian militia leader Charles Taylor launched a new attack in Monrovia Tuesday, targetting a barracks holding 10-thousand people.
It sent refugees fleeing from what they thought was a safe area.
Fighters inside the barracks, who are loyal to rival warlord Roosevelt Johnson, fired back, but there was no word on casualties.
APTV has dramatic, close-up pictures of the chaos and violence in the Liberian capital.
An APTV camera crew out and about in Monrovia with the National Patriotic Front of Liberia --one of the armed militias roaming the capital.
These N-P-F-L militiamen are loyal to warlord Charles Taylor.
He is a government leader and a member of the anarchic country's six-man ruling Council of State.
Only 200 metres (yards) from the U-S embassy, the Mamba Point Hotel was surrounded by N-P-F-L members.
These men were exchanging fire with rival A-F-L fighters, loyal to the Ulimo-J faction which supports the guerrilla leader, Roosevelt Johnson.
Scenes like these, where young men run round with rifles killing other young men, is what now passes for normality in the Liberian capital since the outbreak of fighting nine days ago.
The trouble started when the government issued a warrant for Johnson's arrest on murder charges.
Taylor has refused to negotiate with Johnson over releasing peacekeepers and Lebanese hostages the guerrilla leader is holding at his downtown barracks.
Taylor has called on Johnson to surrender at the U-S embassy or the United Nations.
And a weekend ceasefire was shattered on Monday afternoon by an intense firefight between Taylor's supporters in the N-P-F-L and Johnson's followers.
An N-P-F-L fighter said he was just trying to defend his area.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Something happening? They were opening fire on us."
(Q: Who? Who are they firing at?)
"A-F-L"
(Q: Why?)
"We don't know. We don't know why."
(Q: What happens now? Will you chase them away?)
"We are defending our area - we are not moving away. Do you hear how it goes on?"
(Q: Have they retreated?)
"Yes."
SUPER CAPTION: Captain Ibrahim Amayos, NPFL
Caught in the crossfire, some residents have formed their own vigilante groups, carrying machetes and standing guard over their property.
In Mamba Point, the looting that has forced aid organisations to leave the country has continued, with Taylor's forces joining in, according to witnesses.
All of the shops and office building in the seaside capital have been looted and most of them destroyed since government troops and rebels began the current round of fighting.
There have been reports that fighters loyal to Johnson were gathering southeast of the capital.
A U-N source, said fighters from the Krahn ethnic group may also be headed toward the capital.
But while the fighting continues, others are trying to salvage the remnants of their lives.
More than 60-thousand Monrovians have been left homeless by the violence, and this is exacerbated by the fact that most international agencies have pulled out.

Natural Sound
Liberia's President Charles Taylor vowed not to attack the U-S Embassy again in Liberia, where a former warlord accused of treason has been holed up since the weekend.
The embassy has been on alert since the warlord Roosevelt Johnson unexpectedly arrived at the gate on Saturday morning.
His arrival sparked a police commando attack that killed at least three of his supporters and wounded two Americans.
The U-S embassy in Liberia's capital Monrovia has said that Roosevelt Johnson, the ethnic Krahn civil war rival of President Charles Taylor, had taken refuge there.
It also warned Taylor not to allow a street protest outside the building.
Reinforcements have been flown in to help guard the embassy following the attack upon the building over the weekend by a commando unit attempting to flush out Johnson.
In an attempt to try and smooth relations with the American Embassy, President Charles Taylor vowed not to attack the diplomatic compound.
Inside the compound, U-S servicemen were patrolling the grounds on Tuesday with assault rifles, while the handful of remaining diplomats moved about in flak jackets and helmets.
Liberian soldiers loyal to the former warlord, now president, Taylor tried to arrest Johnson on Saturday.
Fighting broke out on Saturday outside Johnson's house but he managed to escape and fled to the U-S embassy.
His house was then looted.
U-S Diplomats are reported to have said there are no plans to hand Johnson over to Liberian authorities and that American officials in Washington were talking with Taylor.

The Roosevelt family is a prominent American business and political family whose members include United States Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt, as well as First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. The Roosevelts were among the earliest to settle in the Dutch colonial settlement of New Amsterdam, in what would later become New York.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roosevelt_family
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt (/ˈɛlɨnɔr ˈroʊzəvɛlt/; October 11, 1884 – November 7, 1962) was an American politician.[1] She was the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, holding the post from March 1933 to April 1945 during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms in office.[1] President Harry S. Truman later called her the "First Lady of the World" in tribute to her human rights achievements.[2]
A member of the Roosevelt and Livingston families, Eleanor had an unhappy childhood, suffering the deaths of both parents and one of her brothers at a young age. At 15, she attended Allenwood Academy in London, and was deeply influenced by its feminist headmistress Marie Souvestre. Returning to the U.S., she married her fifth cousin once removed, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in 1905. The Roosevelts' marriage was complicated from the beginning by Franklin's controlling mother, Sara, and after discovering Franklin's affair with Lucy Mercer in 1918, Eleanor resolved to seek fulfillment in a public life of her own. She persuaded Franklin to stay in politics following his partial paralysis from polio, and began to give speeches and campaign in his place. After Franklin's election as Governor of New York, Eleanor regularly made public appearances on his behalf. She also shaped the role of First Lady during her tenure and beyond.
Though widely respected in her later years, Roosevelt was a controversial First Lady for her outspokenness, particularly her stance on racial issues. She was the first presidential spouse to hold press conferences, write a syndicated newspaper column, and speak at a national convention. On a few occasions, she publicly disagreed with her husband's policies. She launched an experimental community at Arthurdale, West Virginia, for the families of unemployed miners, later widely regarded as a failure. She advocated for expanded roles for women in the workplace, the civil rights of African Americans and Asian Americans, and the rights of World War II refugees.
Following her husband's death, Eleanor remained active in politics for the rest of her life. She pressed the US to join and support the United Nations and became one of its first delegates. She served as the first chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights, and oversaw the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Later she chaired the John F. Kennedy administration's Presidential Commission on the Status of Women. By the time of her death, she was regarded as "one of the most esteemed women in the world" and "the object of almost universal respect".[3] In 1999, she was ranked in the top ten of Gallup's List of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th Century.[4]

Alice Lee Roosevelt Longworth (February 12, 1884 – February 20, 1980) was an American writer and prominent socialite. She was the oldest child of U.S. President Theodore "T.R." Roosevelt, Jr. (1858–1919). She was the only child of Roosevelt and his first wife, Alice Hathaway Lee (1861–84).
Alice led an unconventional and controversial life. Her marriage to Representative Nicholas Longworth III (Republican-Ohio), a party leader and 43rd Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, was shaky, and her only child Paulina was a result of her affair with Senator William Edgar Borah of Idaho. She temporarily became a Democrat during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and jokingly boasted in a 60 Minutes interview with Eric Sevareid, televised on February 17, 1974, that she was a "hedonist".

New factional fighting broke out in Monrovia on Saturday (18/5), with Krahn factions loyal to Roosevelt Johnson advancing into territory previously held by rival militiamen. The fighting is pitting the Krahns against forces loyal to faction leaders and council of state members Charles Taylor and After these so-called government forces baited their foes, the Krahns advanced, easily pushing into the diplomatic enclave of
Mamba Point, held by Taylor's National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) and members of the Alhaji Kromah led United Liberation Movement (ULIMO-K).

more SOT: well it seems to be a bit of a stalemate on the ground and a series of fights that don't get anywhere. we have seemingly an attempt every so often to attack the training centre. they fight for while... then they retreat and then they fight again three or so more days later. it is really a stalemate at this point.

New factional fighting broke out in Monrovia on Saturday (18/5), with Krahn factions loyal to Roosevelt Johnson advancing into territory previously held by rival militiamen.
