Onehunga stormed home over the closing minutes to snatch a dramatic 21-20 win over Tai Wananga in the development final.
The joint Hamilton/Palmerston North entry, who had beaten their rivals earlier in pool play, stormed out to a quick 14-0 lead and seemed well in control with a 20-6 margin soon after half-time.
But Onehunga regained their composure as the clock counted down, running in three tries to Mauri Bell, John Kaifa and Michael Lemafa, one converted, to tie the scores at 20-20.
Then, with barely a minute remaining, they sealed the victory with a dropped goal from in front of the posts by Trevor Marurai.
"It was a good final," said Onehunga coach Chris Ofanoa. "Tai Wananga came and did their thing, especially in the first half.
"For the second half, I had to give a pretty harsh team talk to our boys, give them a boot up the [backsides] and they fought back.
"The boys were not sticking to their structure, what we had practised all week, and I knew at half-time, I just had to tell them to stick to our structure.
"I think they came out, saw the TV cameras and lights, and it was white-line fever for everyone."
Lemafa was named Most Valuable Player of the development final.

Onehunga
Onehunga is a suburb of Auckland City in New Zealand and the location of the Port of Onehunga, the city's small port on the Manukau Harbour. It is eight kilometres south of the city centre, close to the volcanic cone of Maungakiekie/One Tree Hill.
Onehunga is a residential and light-industrial suburb. According to the 2006 census, there were 7,824 residents in Onehunga. There are almost 1,000 commercial and industrial businesses in the area. Onehunga stretches south from Royal Oak to the north shore of the Manukau Harbour. To the east are the areas of Oranga and Te Papapa; to the west, Hillsborough. On the southern shore of the Manukau Harbour, and linked to Onehunga by two bridges, is the suburb of Mangere Bridge.
Geography
Onehunga is slightly unusual in that it has a substantial underground freshwater source, the Onehunga aquifer, which it owes to rainwater soaking through the lava flows around One Tree Hill. While most of drinking water of the Auckland area is drawn from reservoirs in the Hunua and Waitakere Ranges, around 5% is drawn from the Onehunga aquifer. The up to 20,000 m³ that are daily drawn from the source receive treatment in a local plant before being fed into the freshwater supply network. In contrast, while the waters of Western Springs also seep through the city's lava fields, they are no longer used as a source of drinking water.

Orakei Basin Walkway, Auckland Total Distance: 2.88 km. This walk takes you around the Orakei Basin using the boardwalk and bridge across the Orakei Basin. Orakei Basin was a flooded volcanic crater with a mangrove forest connected to the Waitemata Harbour by Pourewa Creek and Hobson Bay. The walkway includes a 650m boardwalk, which runs over the water alongside the existing rail corridor, and a footbridge that crosses the Orakei Creek arm of the basin. It was really fun walking along the boardwalk, the scenery was great and you could see a lot of birds swimming or resting. Total Distance: 2.88 km. This walk takes you around the Orakei Basin using the boardwalk and bridge across the Orakei Basin.
Orakei Basin was a flooded volcanic crater with a mangrove forest connected to the Waitemata Harbour by Pourewa Creek and Hobson Bay.
The walkway includes a 650m boardwalk, which runs over the water alongside the existing rail corridor, and a footbridge that crosses the Orakei Creek arm of the basin.
It was really fun walking along the boardwalk, the scenery was great and you could see a lot of birds swimming or resting.
