Make Me a Midwife follows three trainees at St Mary's Hospital, Manchester, as they embark on the daunting task of learning to become a midwife.
The three-year training is tough and before the students qualify, they have to clock up 40 births under supervision. Then suddenly they are on their own with no one to turn to.
Chloe has only just left school. Jess is about to do her terrifying first shift since qualifying. And Aurelie is in danger of failing the course. As fragile new life begins, we expect them to look after us and our babies, but there is only so much a trainee can learn from a text book. In this film they swap rubber babies and the lecture theatre for the hospital frontline and high-risk pregnancies to find out if they have really got what it takes to be a midwife.
18-year-old Chloe is a first year student midwife starting her placement on the high-risk delivery unit. She has only just done her A-levels and moved out of home, but she is wide-eyed with enthusiasm about the wonders of childbirth and the challenge of exhausted, fed up mums. It is not long before she faces the more nerve-wracking and intimate milestones of her first vaginal examination and 'catching' her first baby at a caesarean section.
20-year-old Aurelie is struggling in her second year and has one more chance to pass a vital assessment. If she fails, it is unlikely she will ever become a midwife. Her mentor Leslie scrutinises Aurelie's work for a week before making the decision to pass or fail her. Aurelie's dream of returning to Congo to be a midwife is in danger of ending.
Jess, at 22, has just completed her three years' training. On her first shift in the blue uniform of a qualified midwife, she realises that the buck now stops with her. In the life and death dramas she encounters, her decisions are now her responsibility alone. More than anything, Jess wants her first normal birth as a qualified midwife. But on the high-risk delivery unit of St Mary's Hospital, it is unlikely to be a straightforward one.

This episode follows student midwives as they get hands-on experience at Birmingham Women's Hospital - one of the busiest maternity units in the country.
Rebecca is in the first year of her degree course in midwifery at Birmingham City University and is following in a family tradition - both her mum and her grandmother were midwives. Over the next three years she must combine classroom study with practical on-the-job training and aim to assist in forty births. We follow Rebecca during her first placement supervised by her mentor Daisy. Whilst the possibility of assisting during a birth might seem daunting, getting to grips with the basics of urine samples and putting on latex gloves appears far from easy.
Fellow first year Molly admits to getting squeamish just from watching an episode of Casualty. She is mentored by Midwife Kathy, who believes you can not really know the job until you do it. Yet when Molly assists with a mum whose health takes a dramatic turn for the worse shortly after giving birth, it is a learning experience she will never forget.
Meanwhile, third year student Melissa is on her final work placement working with community midwives in an urban district of Birmingham. Here, she will carry out home visits and run her own antenatal clinic whilst her mentor takes a back seat.

Charlotte's been on the induction ward waiting for a bed to come free, for 29 hours, before midwife Gill helps her deliver her baby. This film shows what it's like for midwives to care for families at the most special time of their lives, whilst dealing with the unpredictability of birth and the pressures of the NHS. In this episode at Birmingham Women's Hospital we meet midwife Maureen who prefers to work on the birth centre where birthing pools, aromatherapy massage oils and 'a bit of witchcraft' are all on offer to help deliver babies as nature intended.
Midwife Antoinette has tried the birth centre approach but much prefers the high tech no-nonsense environment of the delivery suite. For her it's about being prepared for anything, especially when you deal with high risk pregnancies where the situation can change in an instance, that's when you need the painkilling drugs and high-tech medical equipment to be readily on-hand.
Giving birth in the midwife led birth centre is almost £200 cheaper for the NHS than having a baby in the more clinical delivery suite but not all mums are confident in making the 'natural' choice.
Consultant Midwife Paula Clarke set up the birth centre 12 years ago and is shocked by the increase in caesarean sections used to deliver babies and is a strong advocate for natural birth.
At her weekly clinic, Paula helps expectant mums plan their births. Mum Loren is pregnant with her second baby but her first was born by emergency C-section after her attempt to have a natural birth become increasingly complicated. Will she opt for a natural, intervention free delivery in the birth centre or the reassurance of medical intervention in the delivery suite?
Meanwhile Guzel and her husband Azat want to go right back to nature opting for no baby scans, no medicine and not even vitamin supplements. We follow the midwives in the birth centre as Guzel chooses to have her baby in the birthing pool with no gas and air. Will she prove that nature's way is the best way?

Being a midwife isn't all roses.
Being a midwife comes with a lot of responsibility, emotional demands, and long working hours. There are plenty of negative aspects of the job that you can’t shy away from when thinking about if it’s for you.
There are lots of stressful elements.
However, the nature of midwifery means it’s a privileged career. Your professional status means you will be highly valued, and get to share some of the best moments of families’ lives. Empowering and supporting women is immensely rewarding.
There are so many more positives than negatives.
To quote from my book (because I can't think of a better way of putting it)!
‘‘This is life changing stuff you’re launching yourself into. It’s not like you’ve seen on ‘One Born Every Minute’ or ‘Call The Midwife’. It’s a lot tougher - and a lot better. Midwifery is frustrating, demanding, and sometimes even scary. But it’s also life-changing, life-affirming and life-expanding.’’

This episode follows the midwives at the University Hospital of Wales as they look after mums who need additional medical support and care.
Specialist midwife Sarah works in the antenatal day unit. Her patient, Lee, is 33 weeks pregnant and has been coming in to the unit for daily scans because her baby's growth has slowed down. Sarah's aim is to keep a close watch on Lee's baby and try to keep him in utero for as long as possible. A week later, Lee is admitted to hospital with signs of pre-eclampsia and the doctors and midwives have to act quickly.
Meanwhile, midwife Helen regularly does the rounds looking after poorly mums who have been admitted to different departments in the hospital. The show follows her on to the coronary care unit, where she visits Carly, who is 32 weeks pregnant with her third child. She has been admitted to hospital with extreme heart palpitations. Having had major heart surgery as a child, she is well known to the cardiac team and so is her mum Jackie, who has a particularly soft spot for one of the heart consultants. Carly was advised against having any further children and the midwives have to keep a very close eye on her as she attempts to have a natural delivery.
Also on midwife Helen's rounds is 35 year old Alison. She is also pregnant with her third child and has been in hospital for three weeks with a debilitating heart condition that one of the doctors describes 'as serious as it gets'. Alison is hoping that she can get to full term and have a natural birth but, as the weeks go by, the doctors have to weigh up the risks and decide whether it is safer to have a C-section. Whichever way they choose, managing Alison's delivery will require considerable medical support from both the midwives and the doctors.

BBC The Midwives Series 1 Episode 3 How the Other Half Push
This film explores the wildly contrasting experiences of the community midwives who look after mums on the two opposite sides of the Wirral near Liverpool.
The Wirral is a peninsula, divided in half by a motorway. On the west are million-pound houses, on the east are some of the most deprived areas in the country. There is a 15-year difference in life expectancy between some areas of the east and west Wirral. In the middle is Arrowe Park Hospital. From here the community midwives venture out in their cars to look after the mums on both sides, before and after they have their babies.
Often just 10 minutes' drive from each other, the mums of the Wirral can be polar opposites in wealth, age and expectations. So, for the midwives, their job can be very different according to which side of the motorway they work. On one side, they are trying to help a family who cannot afford a cooker for their home, on the other they are trying to keep up with the latest in hypno-birthing.
In Birkenhead, in the east, midwife Katie is cheerfully dealing with a mix of teen mums, deprivation and social service cases. In the west, midwife Jan sees more anxious, older professional mothers, who are keen to have everything done to plan. Whilst Katie is tracking down absent mums or visiting a mother whose newborn has been taken into care, Jan is running oversubscribed antenatal classes full of anxious mums and preparing to work alongside a privately hired birth partner, or doula.
Through the midwives, the film follows the pregnancies and births of some very different mums, including 18-year-old Rachael who feels worryingly ambivalent about her accidental pregnancy and Sally, a professional older mum with a very detailed plan for the perfect homebirth.
Which of the two sides presents the greatest challenge for the midwives? And are things always so black and white? Some mums do not conform to expectations and there are some things about having a baby that are true wherever you come from. As midwife Katie says 'they all come out the same way don't they?'

Midwife
A midwife is a professional in midwifery. In addition to providing care to women during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum period, midwives may also provide primary care related to reproductive health, including annual gynecological exams, family planning, and menopausal care. Many developing countries are investing money and training for midwives and other community health workers so that they can provide well-woman primary care services that are currently lacking.
Midwives are specialists in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and well-woman health care. They are educated and trained to recognize the variations of normal progress of labor and deal with deviations from normal to discern and intervene in high risk situations, such as breech births, twin births and births where the baby is in a posterior position, using non-invasive techniques. When a pregnant woman requires care beyond the midwife's scope of practice, they refer women to obstetricians or perinatologists who are specialists in complications related to pregnancy and birth, including surgical and instrumental deliveries. In many parts of the world, these professions work in tandem to provide care to childbearing women. In others, only the midwife is available to provide care, and in yet other countries many women elect to utilize obstetricians primarily over midwives.

It is not long before she faces the more nerve-wracking and intimate milestones of her first vaginal examination and 'catching' her first baby at a caesarean section.
20-year-old Aurelie is struggling in her second year and has one more chance to pass a vital assessment. If she fails, it is unlikely she will ever become a midwife. Her mentor Leslie scrutinises Aurelie's work for a week before making the decision to pass or fail her. Aurelie's dream of returning to Congo to be a midwife is in danger of ending.
Jess, at 22, has just completed her three years' training. On her first shift in the blue uniform of a qualified midwife, she realises that the buck now stops with her. In the life and death dramas she encounters, her decisions are now her responsibility alone. More than anything, Jess wants her first normal birth as a qualified midwife. Giving birth in the midwife led birth centre is almost £200 cheaper for the NHS than having a baby in the more clinical delivery suite but not all mums are confident in making the 'natural' choice.
Consultant Midwife Paula Clarke set up the birth centre 12 years ago and is shocked by the increase in caesarean sections used to deliver babies and is a strong advocate for natural birth.
At her weekly clinic, Paula helps expectant mums plan their births. Mum Loren is pregnant with her second baby but her first was born by emergency C-section after her attempt to have a natural birth become increasingly complicated. In this episode at Birmingham Women's Hospital we meet midwife Maureen who prefers to work on the birth centre where birthing pools, aromatherapy massage oils and 'a bit of witchcraft' are all on offer to help deliver babies as nature intended.
Midwife Antoinette has tried the birth centre approach but much prefers the high tech no-nonsense environment of the delivery suite. For her it's about being prepared for anything, especially when you deal with high risk pregnancies where the situation can change in an instance, that's when you need the painkilling drugs and high-tech medical equipment to be readily on-hand.
Giving birth in the midwife led birth centre is almost £200 cheaper for the NHS than having a baby in the more clinical delivery suite but not all mums are confident in making the 'natural' choice.
Consultant Midwife Paula Clarke set up the birth centre 12 years ago and is shocked by the increase in caesarean sections used to deliver babies and is a strong advocate for natural birth.
At her weekly clinic, Paula helps expectant mums plan their births. Mum Loren is pregnant with her second baby but her first was born by emergency C-section after her attempt to have a natural birth become increasingly complicated. Being a midwife isn't all roses.
Being a midwife comes with a lot of responsibility, emotional demands, and long working hours. There are plenty of negative aspects of the job that you can’t shy away from when thinking about if it’s for you.
There are lots of stressful elements.
However, the nature of midwifery means it’s a privileged career. Your professional status means you will be highly valued, and get to share some of the best moments of families’ lives. Empowering and supporting women is immensely rewarding.
There are so many more positives than negatives.
To quote from my book (because I can't think of a better way of putting it)!
‘‘This is life changing stuff you’re launching yourself into. It’s not like you’ve seen on ‘One Born Every Minute’ or ‘Call The Midwife’. It’s a lot tougher - and a lot better. Specialist midwife Sarah works in the antenatal day unit. Her patient, Lee, is 33 weeks pregnant and has been coming in to the unit for daily scans because her baby's growth has slowed down. Sarah's aim is to keep a close watch on Lee's baby and try to keep him in utero for as long as possible. A week later, Lee is admitted to hospital with signs of pre-eclampsia and the doctors and midwives have to act quickly.
Meanwhile, midwife Helen regularly does the rounds looking after poorly mums who have been admitted to different departments in the hospital. The show follows her on to the coronary care unit, where she visits Carly, who is 32 weeks pregnant with her third child. She has been admitted to hospital with extreme heart palpitations. Having had major heart surgery as a child, she is well known to the cardiac team and so is her mum Jackie, who has a particularly soft spot for one of the heart consultants. Carly was advised against having any further children and the midwives have to keep a very close eye on her as she attempts to have a natural delivery.
Also on midwife Helen's rounds is 35 year old Alison. She is also pregnant with her third child and has been in hospital for three weeks with a debilitating heart condition that one of the doctors describes 'as serious as it gets'. Alison is hoping that she can get to full term and have a natural birth but, as the weeks go by, the doctors have to weigh up the risks and decide whether it is safer to have a C-section. Whichever way they choose, managing Alison's delivery will require considerable medical support from both the midwives and the doctors.

This film explores the wildly contrasting experiences of the community midwives who look after mums on the two opposite sides of the Wirral near Liverpool.
The Wirral is a peninsula, divided in half by a motorway. On the west are million-pound houses, on the east are some of the most deprived areas in the country. There is a 15-year difference in life expectancy between some areas of the east and west Wirral. In the middle is Arrowe Park Hospital. From here the community midwives venture out in their cars to look after the mums on both sides, before and after they have their babies.
Often just 10 minutes' drive from each other, the mums of the Wirral can be polar opposites in wealth, age and expectations. So, for the midwives, their job can be very different according to which side of the motorway they work. On one side, they are trying to help a family who cannot afford a cooker for their home, on the other they are trying to keep up with the latest in hypno-birthing.
In Birkenhead, in the east, midwife Katie is cheerfully dealing with a mix of teen mums, deprivation and social service cases. In the west, midwife Jan sees more anxious, older professional mothers, who are keen to have everything done to plan. Whilst Katie is tracking down absent mums or visiting a mother whose newborn has been taken into care, Jan is running oversubscribed antenatal classes full of anxious mums and preparing to work alongside a privately hired birth partner, or doula.
Through the midwives, the film follows the pregnancies and births of some very different mums, including 18-year-old Rachael who feels worryingly ambivalent about her accidental pregnancy and Sally, a professional older mum with a very detailed plan for the perfect homebirth.
Which of the two sides presents the greatest challenge for the midwives? And are things always so black and white? Some mums do not conform to expectations and there are some things about having a baby that are true wherever you come from. As midwife Katie says 'they all come out the same way don't they?'
