Madeline is a media franchise that originated as a series of children's books written and illustrated by Ludwig Bemelmans, an Austrian author. The books have been adapted into numerous formats, spawning telefilms, television series and a live action feature film. The adaptations are famous for the closing line, a famous phrase Ethel Barrymore used to rebuff curtain calls, "That's all there is, there isn't any more." The stories take place in a Catholic boarding school in Paris. Much of the media start with the line "In an old house in Paris that was covered in vines, lived twelve little girls in two straight lines ..." The stories often are written entirely in rhyme, and include simple themes of daily life which appeal to children.
Madeline was written by Ludwig Bemelmans and published in 1939. Bemelmans wrote five sequels between 1953 and 1961. Later books in the series were written by Bemelmans' grandson John Bemelmans Marciano. The books focus on a group of girls in a Catholic boarding school in Paris. Madeline is the smallest of the girls. She is seven years old, and the only redhead. She is the bravest and most outgoing of the girls.
Madeline is a book series, part of the Madeline media franchise, originally created by Ludwig Bemelmans. The series follows the daily adventures of Madeline, a seven-year-old girl attending a boarding school in Paris with eleven other girls, under the care of their teacher, Miss Clavel.
The first book was published in 1939, and proved to be a success, so Bemelmans wrote many sequels in the 1940s and 1950s. The series continued, written by Bemelmans' grandson John Bemelmans Marciano.
In the first book, Madeline's "papa" sends her a dolls' house when she is recovering from an appendectomy, and the girls all go to visit their parents in the Christmas book.
Each book in the series begins with the rhyme:
"In an old house in Paris That was covered in vines Lived twelve little girls in two straight lines.”
Madeline is the smallest yet bravest of the twelve girls at the boarding school. She is only seven years old and is the only redhead in the school. She has many adventures while there, including falling off a bridge and being saved by a stray dog, and meeting the mischievous boy next door named Pepito.

I've got a lovesick tale to tell to you
Though it ain't no fail of mine
It's about a gal named sue
And a boy named lou
They were fightin' all the time
Sue came home one afternoon
And found an empty dining room
Without a word
A turtledove had flown
Sue began to moan
"My sweetie went away
But he didn't say where
He didn't say when
He didn't say why
Without biddin' me goodbye
Oh I'm blue as I can be
I know he loves another one
But he didn't say who
He didn't say when
He didn't say what
His momma has got
That took my sweetie from me
I'm like a little lost sheep
And I can't sleep
But I keep tryin' to forget
My travelin' poppa, he left his momma all alone
I groan
My sweetie went away but he didn't say where
He didn't say when
He didn't say why
I know I'll die
