The term night sky refers to the sky as seen at night. The term is usually associated with astronomy, with reference to views of celestial bodies such as stars, the Moon, and planets that become visible on a clear night after the Sun has set. Natural light sources in a night sky include moonlight, starlight, and airglow, depending on location and timing. The Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australis light up the skies of the arctic and Antarctic Circle respectively. Occasionally, a large Coronal Mass Ejection from the sun or simply high levels of solar wind extend the phenomenon toward the equator
The night sky and studies of it have a historical place in both ancient and modern cultures. In the past, for instance, farmers have used the state of the night sky as a calendar to determine when to plant crops. Many cultures have drawn constellations between stars in the sky, using them in association with legends and mythology about their deities.
The anciently developed belief of astrology is generally based on the belief that relationships between heavenly bodies influence or convey information about events on Earth. The scientific study of the night sky and bodies observed within it, meanwhile, takes place in the science of astronomy.
Night or nighttime (sp. night-time or night time) is the period of time between the sunset and the sunrise when the Sun is below the horizon.
This occurs after dusk. The opposite of night is day (or "daytime" to distinguish it from "day" as used for a 24-hour period). The start and end points of time of a night vary based on factors such as season, latitude, longitude and timezone.
At any given time, one side of the planet Earth is bathed in light from the Sun (the daytime) and the other side of the Earth is in the shadow caused by the Earth blocking the light of the sun. This shadow is called the umbra. Natural illumination is still provided by a combination of moonlight, planetary light, starlight, diffuse zodiacal light, gegenschein, and airglow. In some circumstances, bioluminescence, aurorae, and lightning can provide some illumination. The glow provided by artificial illumination is sometimes referred to as light pollution because it can interfere with observational astronomy and ecosystems.
The sky (or celestial dome) is everything that lies above the surface of the Earth, including the atmosphere and outer space.
In the field of astronomy, the sky is also called the celestial sphere. This is viewed from Earth's surface as an imaginary dome where the sun, stars, planets, and the moon are seen to be traveling. The celestial sphere is conventionally divided into regions called constellations. Usually, the term sky is used informally as the point of view from the Earth's surface; however, the meaning and usage can vary. In some cases, such as in discussing the weather, the sky refers to only the lower, more dense portions of the atmosphere.
During daylight, the sky appears to be blue because air scatters blue sunlight more than it scatters red. At night, the sky appears to be a mostly dark surface or region scattered with stars. During the day, the Sun can be seen in the sky unless obscured by clouds. In the night sky (and to some extent during the day) the moon, planets and stars are visible in the sky. Some of the natural phenomena seen in the sky are clouds, rainbows, and aurorae. Lightning and precipitation can also be seen in the sky during storms. Birds, insects, aircraft, and kites are often considered to fly in the sky. Due to human activities, smog during the day and light pollution during the night are often seen above large cities.

Take a DEEP BREATH before watching this ESOCast mashup with Dr. J. The Sun is setting behind Cerro Paranal in the Chilean Atacama desert. While astronomers get ready to observe with ESO's Very Large Telescope, Nature prepares for her own grand display. As night falls over the desert, the southern sky reveals its nocturnal beauty, leaving the spectator in silent amazement. Some people, however, don't just stare at the spectacle. With great skill, they record these unique moments for everyone to see - they are the photographers of the night. Anyone who has been up at night in a remote, high place such as at one of ESO's observatories in Chile may have been lucky enough to experience the splendid view of the myriad stars shining brightly from the heavens. It is a both a dream and a challenge...

This is a time-lapse video of my latest space painting, it's acrylic on canvas. Paint time for this was around 20 minutes, at most 30 if you take into account my moving the camera around. :P This was a really fun video to shoot, and edit especially being able to see myself painting. Let me know if there is any of my art you would like to see in one of these videos, as I'm hoping to do more! Beautiful harvest moon eclipse lights up the sky around the world and won't be seen again until 2024. A harvest moon lit up the night sky across the globe Friday night and parts of the world witnessed an eclipse. Eclipse was visible to the naked eye from Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia but not North or South America. Stunning photos from across the globe showed the enormous and brighter-than-normal harvest moon. Source: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/

My inspiration came from a photograph of Mount Rainier in Washington State. I wanted to paint a night scenery with a Milky Way over the Mountain. It took me a little bit of time to create the even tone background but once it dried I was able to start playing with white gouache. White gouache is just like watercolor, it also dilutes with water but instead of being transparent is opaque. I personally do not like watercolor white, it doesn't give the same effect that's why I use white gouache :) The stars are my favorite part. Just use the hardest brush you have and keep spraying until you get enough stars in your painting. I used different color variations. It looks so much prettier this way. I added all the annotations on the colors and brushes that you can see while watching the vid...

Many months feel like years
Many days feel like the movies
Not a word has been exchanged
Just more dirt under my nail
And I haven’t seen the night sky
The steel glow in my eye
Just a stained idea
To early night skies
I didn’t hold your hand till I die
Your now dirt under my nail
How the smoke reflects off your eyes
The smoke stained them grey
And I haven’t seen the night sky
The steel glow in my eye
Just a stained idea
To early night skies
And I will always pack up and leave
For there are too many frames in this room
With your mind blocking your eyes
There’s no room to breath
And I haven’t seen the night sky
The steel glow in my eye
Just a stained idea
To early night skies
Not a word has been exchanged
