Kibera (Nubian: Forest or Jungle) is a division of Nairobi Area, Kenya, and neighbourhood of the city of Nairobi, 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the city centre. Kibera is the largest slum in Nairobi, and the largest urban slum in Africa. The 2009 Kenya Population and Housing Census reports Kibera's population as 170,070, contrary to previous estimates of one or two million people. Other sources suggest the total Kibera population may be 500,000 to well over 1,000,000 depending on which slums are included in defining Kibera.
Most of Kibera slum residents live in extreme poverty, earning less than $1.00 per day. Unemployment rates are high. Persons living with HIV in the slum are many, as are AIDS cases. Cases of assault and rape are common. There are few schools, and most people cannot afford an education for their children. Clean water is scarce and therefore diseases caused by related poor hygiene are prevalent. A great majority of people living in the slum lack access to medical care.

30 minute documentary about Kibera, the world's largest slum on the outskirts of Nairobi in Kenya. The film shows the appalling conditions that the residents have to endure, but gets across the incredible spirit of the people who live there. It also focuses on the work of a charity called Kibera in need, which is working incredibly hard to try and make a difference.
A Girl's Life is one of five stories from the In Kibera project, sharing stories of life and hope from East Africa's largest slum Eunice Akoth is a fourth grade student at the Kibera School for Girls. She has a passion for poetry, an aptitude for math, and a love of the book Matilda by Roald Dahl. She has lived all her life in Kibera, and though she is only ten years old, she dreams of traveling the world, from New York to Melbourne, before returning to Kenya and becoming a doctor. Though she has been lucky enough to receive a free education, and is celebrated as an exceptionally bright student by her teachers, she also represents the far-too-common case of a girl who must overcome extreme obstacles in order to find a path out of poverty.
Most people migrate to the cities in the hope of finding work. But work is hard to find, and so renting a room in the slum is the nearest option. Kibera is one of Africa's largest slums. About a million people live in the slum which is only 3 square kilometers in area. Among them are children. For the many children in the slum, education offers their hope of a better future... so they desperately seek it.

Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa, is situated southwest of Nairobi city centre and is framed by a railway line and the Ngong River. In an area of about 4 square kilometres there are approximately 600,000 to one million people living in there. There are no precise figures. People say it is the most dense populated area on earth. The living conditions within Kibera are different depending on the area. Kibera is heavily polluted by soot, dust, and other wastes. Open sewage routes, in addition to the common use of flying toilets, also contribute to contamination of the slum with human and animal faeces. All said, Kibera is probably the friendliest slum in the world. HISTORY The slum originated in 1918 as a Nubian soldiers’ settlement in a forest outside Nairobi, with plots allotted ...
After Richard Tekka started a soccer team for girls in Kibera, Kenya, Africa's largest slum, he realized that the girls needed more than soccer: they needed an education. So he started the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA) as a free school, with JA at its heart. From 13 girls in 2006 to 130 today, KGSA runs a JA company, called Kibera Shedders, which is "shedding light on Kibera" through Internet journalism. Students shoot, write, edit, produce, and market their company, meeting with visitors to Kibera and using Wordpress, YouTube, Facebook, and other channels to distribute their stories. Richard serves as Program Director and JA volunteer at KGSA. "Were it not for JA," he says, "we would not be where we are right now." Kibera Girls Soccer Academy is JA!

I've got a broken sky
Miles above
I talk to every night
It used to be the one to say it's all right
Now it's the setting sun
Every part of me is you
Can we make this black sky blue?
Well maybe I wouldn't be so broken-hearted
If you were still here with me
Love is just a disease
I'm taught about it
It only makes me cry
I walk these empty rooms
Half alive
And not the way I knew
Sometimes the silence seems so loud
I hear it in my dreams
Every part of me is you
Can we fill these empty rooms?
Maybe I wouldn't be so broken-hearted
If you were still here with me
Love is just a disease
I'm taught about it
It only makes me cry, ohhh...
