Apple Lossless, also known as Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), or Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE), is an audio coding format, and its reference audio codec implementation, developed by Apple Inc. for lossless data compression of digital music. After initially keeping it proprietary from its inception in 2004, in late 2011 Apple made the codec available open source and royalty-free. Traditionally, Apple has referred to the codec as Apple Lossless, though more recently they have begun to use the abbreviated term ALAC when referring to the codec.

[Please read this whole description before commenting in order to make sure you haven't misinterpreted my intentions for this video. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate a technique that you can use on your own, it's not meant to compare MP3 to a lossless format.]
This is a method compare the difference between a lossless file and a compressed version of that file. This isn't just limited to MP3s - any audio compression that doesn't speed up, slow down or change the volume in audio can be tested with this technique provided that you have the original, uncompressed version that was used to create the compressed version.
What this does is cancel out everything except for the differences in the two files by inverting one and mixing them after they're both lined up. Anything that's not present or has been added during compression can be heard. I used Adobe Audition to do this, but Audacity works as well.
I used a slightly sped-up version of the song "The Bad Touch" because it was easy to line up the lossless and lossy versions, and it has both high and low frequencies. The lossy version of the file was encoded at 192Kbps using Adobe Audition 3.0.1.
Additionally, I normalized the mixed track in order to allow it to be heard better. But the purpose of this video is a tutorial so you can do this yourself and experiment more, allowing you to hear it at its original volume or whatever your heart desires.
Addendum:
YouTube does use compression so this isn't a fair comparison, but is more intended as a demonstration of a technique you can try on your own. Still, just for fun, I did try comparing the two after YouTube compressed the video's audio.

And you can compare those to how it looks in the video. Obviously the high frequencies are cut off and there is some clipping that was introduced apparently, but there are still noticeable differences between the two. Probably not audible differences, though.
Just in case anyone is wondering, get the video's audio to make those images, I used a service that downloads the direct audio stream from YouTube to an M4A file (no re-compression, just the straight audio data from YouTube ), then used NeroAAC to decode that into a .wav file. No transcoding used, let alone transcoding to MP3.

Tutorial on how to convert from lossless audio codec FLAC to Apples lossless codec ALAC.
iPod, Iphone and other Apple products do not support FLAC, therefore converting FLAC files to ALAC is the only way to enjoy lossless audio on any Apple device.

You can Store it Losslessly, but Can you play it back? The challenge of Lossless audio that Most players don't do it justice, so all those extra bits that ALAC and FLAC store get lost in the mix. Literally in the Mixer.

Equipment & Results
All tests were performed on a Surface Pro 2 256gb in Flight Mode on battery power. The room was acoustically treated but there was background noise from surrounding conversations.
RUN 1:
Shane initially attempted to use a Sennheiser HD650 with a Vioelectric V100 and Headroom Pico DAC. He was unable to perform the first trial due to background noise, and switched to an Audio Technica W10VTG. All trials below were performed with the W10VTG. Results were hidden from view during the trials.

I was surprised to discover that my iPod Shuffle can play uncompressed WAV files, contrary to my mistaken belief that everything you transfer to the iPod gets re-encoded into AAC compressed format. Apple's uncompressed (AIFF) and lossless (ALAC) audio formats play fine as well.
But when will the iTunes Store ever have music available for download in a lossless format? Even tracks that are advertised as "Mastered for iTunes" are still in 256 kbps AAC compressed format. These days most users have more than enough bandwidth and storage space to accommodate a library of music in lossless format.

I did this comparison because I noticed that the FLAC and ALAC file sizes were smaller than WAV.
WAV file is 45.5 mb, ALAC is 35.5 mb, and FLAC is 35.3 mb.
Does it mean that ALAC and FLAC are not truly lossless?

Apple Lossless, also known as Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), or Apple Lossless Encoder (ALE), is an audio codec developed by Apple Inc. for lossless data compression of digital music. After initially being proprietary for many years, in late 2011 Apple open sourced and made royalty-free the Apple Lossless codec. Apple does not use the ALAC abbreviation, always using the name Apple Lossless when presenting or discussing this codec, but it is more commonly referred to as ALAC outside of Apple.
Apple Lossless data is stored within an MP4 container with the filename extension .m4a. This extension is also used by Apple for lossy AAC audio data in an MP4 container (same container, different audio encoding). However, Apple Lossless is not a variant of AAC (which is a lossy format), but rather a distinct lossless format that uses linear prediction similar to other lossless codecs. These other lossless codecs, such as FLAC and Shorten, are not natively supported in Apple's iTunes software, either on computers (Mac or Windows) or iOS devices, so users of iTunes software who want to use a lossless format which allows the addition of metadata (unlike WAV/AIFF or other PCM-type formats, where metadata is usually ignored) have to use ALAC. All current iDevices can play ALAC–encoded files. ALAC also does not use any DRM scheme, but by the nature of the MP4 container, it is thought that DRM could be applied to ALAC much the same way it can with files in other QuickTime containers.

WAV, FLAC, and Apple Lossless file size comparisonWAV, FLAC, and Apple Lossless file size comparison
I did this comparison because I noticed that the FLAC and ALAC file sizes were smaller than WAV. WAV file is 45.5 mb, ALAC is 35.5 mb, and FLAC is 35.3 mb. Does it mean that ALAC and FLAC are not truly lossless? What do you think? -

Audiophiles rejoice: iPods can play uncompressed/lossless music!
I was surprised to discover that my iPod Shuffle can play uncompressed WAV files, contrary to my mistaken belief that everything you transfer to the iPod gets re-encoded into AAC compressed format. Apple's uncompressed (AIFF) and lossless (ALAC) audio formats play fine as well. But when will the iTunes Store ever have music available for download in a lossless format? Even tracks that are advertised as "Mastered for iTunes" are still in 256 kbps AAC compressed format. These days most users have more than enough bandwidth and storage space to accommodate a library of music in lossless format. -

[Please read this whole description before commenting in order to make sure you haven't misinterpreted my intentions for this video. The purpose of this video is to demonstrate a technique that you can use on your own, it's not meant to compare MP3 to a lossless format.]
This is a method compare the difference between a lossless file and a compressed version of that file. This isn't just limited to MP3s - any audio compression that doesn't speed up, slow down or change the volume in audio can be tested with this technique provided that you have the original, uncompressed version that was used to create the compressed version.
What this does is cancel out everything except for the differences in the two files by inverting one and mixing them after they're both lined up. Anything that's not present or has been added during compression can be heard. I used Adobe Audition to do this, but Audacity works as well.
I used a slightly sped-up version of the song "The Bad Touch" because it was easy to line up the lossless and lossy versions, and it has both high and low frequencies. The lossy version of the file was encoded at 192Kbps using Adobe Audition 3.0.1.
Additionally, I normalized the mixed track in order to allow it to be heard better. But the purpose of this video is a tutorial so you can do this yourself and experiment more, allowing you to hear it at its original volume or whatever your heart desires.
Addendum:
YouTube does use compression so this isn't a fair comparison, but is more intended as a demonstration of a technique you can try on your own. Still, just for fun, I did try comparing the two after YouTube compressed the video's audio.

Just in case anyone is wondering, get the video's audio to make those images, I used a service that downloads the direct audio stream from YouTube to an M4A file (no re-compression, just the straight audio data from YouTube ), then used NeroAAC to decode that into a .wav file. No transcoding used, let alone transcoding to MP3.

Equipment & Results
All tests were performed on a Surface Pro 2 256gb in Flight Mode on battery power. The room was acoustically treated but there was background noise from surrounding conversations.
RUN 1:
Shane initially attempted to use a Sennheiser HD650 with a Vioelectric V100 and Headroom Pico DAC. He was unable to perform the first trial due to background noise, and switched to an Audio Technica W10VTG. All trials below were performed with the W10VTG. Results were hidden from view during the trials.

He was unable to perform the first trial because of background noise, and switched to a Fitear MH334 custom in-ear monitor, with a JDS Labs Objective 2 amplifier and ODAC on battery power. All trials below were performed with the MH334. Results were hidden from view during the trials.

Equipment & Results
All tests were performed on a Surface Pro 2 256gb in Flight Mode on battery power. The room was acoustically treated but there was background noise from surrounding conversations.
RUN 1:
Shane initially attempted to use a Sennheiser HD650 with a Vioelectric V100 and Headroom Pico DAC. He was unable to perform the first trial due to background noise, and switched to an Audio Technica W10VTG. All trials below were performed with the W10VTG. Results were hidden from view during the trials.

I was surprised to discover that my iPod Shuffle can play uncompressed WAV files, contrary to my mistaken belief that everything you transfer to the iPod gets re-encoded into AAC compressed format. Apple's uncompressed (AIFF) and lossless (ALAC) audio formats play fine as well.
But when will the iTunes Store ever have music available for download in a lossless format? Even tracks that are advertised as "Mastered for iTunes" are still in 256 kbps AAC compressed format. These days most users have more than enough bandwidth and storage space to accommodate a library of music in lossless format.
