Georgie Auld (May 19, 1919 -- January 8, 1990) was a jazz tenor saxophonist, clarinetist, and bandleader.Auld was born John Altwerger in Toronto. He lived in the United States from the late 1920s onward, and was most noteworthy for his work with Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Erroll Garner, Dizzy Gillespie, Al Porcino, Billy Eckstine, Tiny Kahn, Frank Rosolino, and many others. Primarily a swing saxophonist, he did many big band stints in his career, and led several big bands, including Georgie Auld and His Orchestra and Georgie Auld and His Hollywood All Stars. Auld also played some rock´n roll working for Alan Freed in 1959. He can be heard playing sax on the 1968 Ella Fitzgerald album 30 by Ella.In 1977 he played a bandleader in the motion picture New York, New York, starring Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro and also acted as a technical consultant for the film. He died in Palm Springs, California, aged 71.

The 2011 Association of Performing Arts Presenters ended this year’s conference with the 2011 National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Masters Induction Ceremonies. Held at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, this years induction class included composer and lyricist Johnny Mandel, flutist Hubert Laws, educator and saxophonist Dave Liebman, The Marsailis Family including father Ellis, sons Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason, and record producer and executive Orrin Keepnews.
The NEA also gives the A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Master Award for Jazz Advocacy. This award is generally a non-music recipient who’s made contributions to the history, technology and advancement in jazz, and appreciation. This year’s Spellman recipient is legendary record producer and executive Orrin Keepnews. He was the co-founder of Riverside Records and founder of Milestone Records. While producer and executive at Riverside Records, Keepnews recorded and gave the world great recordings such as pianists’ Thelonious Monk’s “Brilliant Corners” and Bill Evans “Everyone Digs Bill Evans.” From 1952 until the death of co-founder Bill Grauer, these guys recorded jazz icons that shaped and captured the true essence of America’s classical music. Riverside’s impressive roster included Randy Weston, Nat and Julian Adderley, Wes Montgomery, and Johnny Griffin. In 1966 Keepnews started Milestone Records then later heading up the jazz division at Fantasy Records. Fantasy bought the entire Riverside catalogue and he oversaw the reissues of those legendary recordings.
Educator, pianist, and father Ellis Marsails explained “me being honored with my sons, words can’t describe this! The fact that my boys have made a decision to play and continue the rich tradition of jazz is both priceless and rewarding.” This year the NEA Jazz Masters also inducted the entire Marsalis family. Sons Wynton and Branford came out during the “young lion” era during the 1980’s when they and a younger generation of jazz musicians played the music at a time when the music and club scene was scarce in New York City and all over the country. These brothers gave the music new life as well as began educating the importance and history of the music to the younger generation.
Composer, trumpeter, and arranger Johnny Mandel has been a major staple in fusing jazz in film, pop, and modern contemporary music. Mandel has been hailed as the first person to fuse modern jazz music into a musical score. He was a well accomplished trumpet player during the 1940’s and 50’s backing such musical luminaries as Chubby Jackson, Buddy Rich, Georgie Auld, and Zoot Sims. His astute skills as a film composer/arranger came during the late 1950’s and 1960’s when he contributed the score to The Sandpiper which spun the Grammy-Award Winning song “The Shadow of Your Smile” and “Suicide is Painless” from the Academy Award Nominated “M.A.S.H.” Mandel has gone on to score 30 films and has won five Grammy-Awards.
Flutist Hubert Laws has backed and performed with some the heavyweights in jazz music. This Houston, Texas native first got his start in New York while attending Juilliard School. Bassist and 1998 NEA Jazz Master Ron Carter gave Barron’s induction speech and elaborated how Hubert’s playing was” beautiful and poetic.” Over the years Laws has played with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Sarah Vaughn, Earl Klugh, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, and Chick Corea. Herbert’s induction performance was backed by 2010 NEA Jazz Master Inductee and friend Kenny Barron.
Saxophonist and educator Dave Libeman was a major voice during the 1970’s New York City “jazz loft” scene at a time when jazz clubs were closing and musicians who wanted to play jazz needed a venue to play. It was during this time he backed the legendary Miles Davis and Elvin Jones in their groups that Dave developed his style as a fiery and brash saxophonist and flutist. Today, he’s the artist in residence at the Manhattan School of Music and teaches master classes all over the world.

Frank Rosolino
Frank Rosolino (August 20, 1926 – November 26, 1978) was an American jazz trombonist. He shot both of his sons, one fatally, before committing suicide in 1978.
Biography
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Frank Rosolino studied the guitar with his father from the age of 9. He took up the trombone at age 14 while he was enrolled at Miller High School where he played with Milt Jackson in the school's stage band and small group. Having never graduated, Rosolino joined the 86th Division Army Band during World War II.

The 2011 Association of Performing Arts Presenters ended this year’s conference with the 2011 National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Masters Induction Ceremonies. Held at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, this years induction class included composer and lyricist Johnny Mandel, flutist Hubert Laws, educator and saxophonist Dave Liebman, The Marsailis Family including father Ellis, sons Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason, and record producer and executive Orrin Keepnews. The NEA also gives the A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Master Award for Jazz Advocacy. This award is generally a non-music recipient who’s made contributions to the history, technology and advancement in jazz, and appreciation. This year’s Spellman recipient is legendary record producer and executive Orrin Keepnews. He was the co-founder of Riverside Records and founder of Milestone Records. While producer and executive at Riverside Records, Keepnews recorded and gave the world great recordings such as pianists’ Thelonious Monk’s “Brilliant Corners” and Bill Evans “Everyone Digs Bill Evans.” From 1952 until the death of co-founder Bill Grauer, these guys recorded jazz icons that shaped and captured the true essence of America’s classical music. Riverside’s impressive roster included Randy Weston, Nat and Julian Adderley, Wes Montgomery, and Johnny Griffin. In 1966 Keepnews started Milestone Records then later heading up the jazz division at Fantasy Records. Fantasy bought the entire Riverside catalogue and he oversaw the reissues of those legendary recordings. Educator, pianist, and father Ellis Marsails explained “me being honored with my sons, words can’t describe this! The fact that my boys have made a decision to play and continue the rich tradition of jazz is both priceless and rewarding.” This year the NEA Jazz Masters also inducted the entire Marsalis family. Sons Wynton and Branford came out during the “young lion” era during the 1980’s when they and a younger generation of jazz musicians played the music at a time when the music and club scene was scarce in New York City and all over the country. These brothers gave the music new life as well as began educating the importance and history of the music to the younger generation. Composer, trumpeter, and arranger Johnny Mandel has been a major staple in fusing jazz in film, pop, and modern contemporary music. Mandel has been hailed as the first person to fuse modern jazz music into a musical score. He was a well accomplished trumpet player during the 1940’s and 50’s backing such musical luminaries as Chubby Jackson, Buddy Rich, Georgie Auld, and Zoot Sims. His astute skills as a film composer/arranger came during the late 1950’s and 1960’s when he contributed the score to The Sandpiper which spun the Grammy-Award Winning song “The Shadow of Your Smile” and “Suicide is Painless” from the Academy Award Nominated “M.A.S.H.” Mandel has gone on to score 30 films and has won five Grammy-Awards. Flutist Hubert Laws has backed and performed with some the heavyweights in jazz music. This Houston, Texas native first got his start in New York while attending Juilliard School. Bassist and 1998 NEA Jazz Master Ron Carter gave Barron’s induction speech and elaborated how Hubert’s playing was” beautiful and poetic.” Over the years Laws has played with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Sarah Vaughn, Earl Klugh, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, and Chick Corea. Herbert’s induction performance was backed by 2010 NEA Jazz Master Inductee and friend Kenny Barron. Saxophonist and educator Dave Libeman was a major voice during the 1970’s New York City “jazz loft” scene at a time when jazz clubs were closing and musicians who wanted to play jazz needed a venue to play. It was during this time he backed the legendary Miles Davis and Elvin Jones in their groups that Dave developed his style as a fiery and brash saxophonist and flutist. Today, he’s the artist in residence at the Manhattan School of Music and teaches master classes all over the world. This warm breezy day was filled with life and fun, with lawn games and laughter, and a radiant bride with a garland of flowers on her head. The wedding party celebrated with a ceilidh, as well as Bristol based band Joyshop, who provided the song to this film. A shared banquet was followed by cupcakes and brownies and all topped off with ice-creams served off a bicycle. Recorded in 1944. Georgie Auld (May 19, 1919 -- January 8, 1990) was a jazz tenor saxophonist, clarinetist, and bandleader.Auld was born John Altwerger in Toronto. He lived in the United States from the late 1920s onward, and was most noteworthy for his work with Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Erroll Garner, Dizzy Gillespie, Al Porcino, Billy Eckstine, Tiny Kahn, Frank Rosolino, and many others. Georgie Auld (May 19, 1919 -- January 8, 1990) was a jazz tenor saxophonist, clarinetist, and bandleader.Auld was born John Altwerger in Toronto. He lived in the United States from the late 1920s onward, and was most noteworthy for his work with Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Erroll Garner, Dizzy Gillespie, Al Porcino, Billy Eckstine, Tiny Kahn, Frank Rosolino, and many others. Primarily a swing saxophonist, he did many big band stints in his career, and led several big bands, including Georgie Auld and His Orchestra and Georgie Auld and His Hollywood All Stars. Auld also played some rock´n roll working for Alan Freed in 1959. He can be heard playing sax on the 1968 Ella Fitzgerald album 30 by Ella.In 1977 he played a bandleader in the motion picture New York, New York, starring Liza Minnelli and Robert De Niro and also acted as a technical consultant for the film. He died in Palm Springs, California, aged 71.

The 2011 Association of Performing Arts Presenters ended this year’s conference with the 2011 National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Masters Induction Ceremonies. ...
The 2011 Association of Performing Arts Presenters ended this year’s conference with the 2011 National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Masters Induction Ceremonies. Held at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, this years induction class included composer and lyricist Johnny Mandel, flutist Hubert Laws, educator and saxophonist Dave Liebman, The Marsailis Family including father Ellis, sons Branford, Wynton, Delfeayo, and Jason, and record producer and executive Orrin Keepnews.
The NEA also gives the A.B. Spellman NEA Jazz Master Award for Jazz Advocacy. This award is generally a non-music recipient who’s made contributions to the history, technology and advancement in jazz, and appreciation. This year’s Spellman recipient is legendary record producer and executive Orrin Keepnews. He was the co-founder of Riverside Records and founder of Milestone Records. While producer and executive at Riverside Records, Keepnews recorded and gave the world great recordings such as pianists’ Thelonious Monk’s “Brilliant Corners” and Bill Evans “Everyone Digs Bill Evans.” From 1952 until the death of co-founder Bill Grauer, these guys recorded jazz icons that shaped and captured the true essence of America’s classical music. Riverside’s impressive roster included Randy Weston, Nat and Julian Adderley, Wes Montgomery, and Johnny Griffin. In 1966 Keepnews started Milestone Records then later heading up the jazz division at Fantasy Records. Fantasy bought the entire Riverside catalogue and he oversaw the reissues of those legendary recordings.
Educator, pianist, and father Ellis Marsails explained “me being honored with my sons, words can’t describe this! The fact that my boys have made a decision to play and continue the rich tradition of jazz is both priceless and rewarding.” This year the NEA Jazz Masters also inducted the entire Marsalis family. Sons Wynton and Branford came out during the “young lion” era during the 1980’s when they and a younger generation of jazz musicians played the music at a time when the music and club scene was scarce in New York City and all over the country. These brothers gave the music new life as well as began educating the importance and history of the music to the younger generation.
Composer, trumpeter, and arranger Johnny Mandel has been a major staple in fusing jazz in film, pop, and modern contemporary music. Mandel has been hailed as the first person to fuse modern jazz music into a musical score. He was a well accomplished trumpet player during the 1940’s and 50’s backing such musical luminaries as Chubby Jackson, Buddy Rich, Georgie Auld, and Zoot Sims. His astute skills as a film composer/arranger came during the late 1950’s and 1960’s when he contributed the score to The Sandpiper which spun the Grammy-Award Winning song “The Shadow of Your Smile” and “Suicide is Painless” from the Academy Award Nominated “M.A.S.H.” Mandel has gone on to score 30 films and has won five Grammy-Awards.
Flutist Hubert Laws has backed and performed with some the heavyweights in jazz music. This Houston, Texas native first got his start in New York while attending Juilliard School. Bassist and 1998 NEA Jazz Master Ron Carter gave Barron’s induction speech and elaborated how Hubert’s playing was” beautiful and poetic.” Over the years Laws has played with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Sarah Vaughn, Earl Klugh, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, and Chick Corea. Herbert’s induction performance was backed by 2010 NEA Jazz Master Inductee and friend Kenny Barron.
Saxophonist and educator Dave Libeman was a major voice during the 1970’s New York City “jazz loft” scene at a time when jazz clubs were closing and musicians who wanted to play jazz needed a venue to play. It was during this time he backed the legendary Miles Davis and Elvin Jones in their groups that Dave developed his style as a fiery and brash saxophonist and flutist. Today, he’s the artist in residence at the Manhattan School of Music and teaches master classes all over the world.

L’histoire
John Robie a été, avant la guerre, surnommé « le Chat » en raison de son extraordinaire habileté dans la spécialisation du vol de bijoux. Mais Robie s’est acheté une conduite et, ayant combattu dans la Résistance, il coule maintenant des jours heureux dans le cadre ensoleillé de la Riviera. Mais voici que la police, alertée, le soupçonne d’être l’auteur de plusieurs vols sensationnels dont la technique correspond exactement à celle du « Chat ». Ayant échappé de justesse aux inspecteurs venus pour l’arrêter, Robie va tenter lui-même de s’innocenter en livrant le voleur à la police.
Critique
Bien sûr, il s’agit d’une comédie policière dont les répliques font rire, mais il n’en demeure pas moins que l’idée directrice d’Hitchcock l’a conduit à adopter la formule de Jacques Becker pour Touchez pas au grisbi : les voleurs sont fatigués. (…) On pourra s’étonner de ce que je vois dans To Catch a Thief, un film pessimiste ; il suffit, pour s’en rendre compte, d’écouter la musique tristement mélodique de Georgie Auld et Lyn Murray, et d’observer le jeu très inhabituel de Cary Grant. (…) Film peut-être mineur dans la carrière de l’homme qui sait le mieux ce qu’il veut obtenir et comment l’obtenir, To Catch a Thief satisfait pleinement tous les publics – et le plus snob comme le plus populaire – tout en étant l’un des plus cyniques qu’Hitchcock ait tournés. La dernière scène du film, entre Cary Grant et Grace Kelly, est un modèle du genre. C’est un curieux film qui renouvelle Hitchcock et le prolonge tout à la fois, un film divertissant, attachant et décidément très méchant à l’égard de la police française et des touristes américains.

John Robie a été, avant la guerre, surnommé « le Chat » en raison de son extraordinaire habileté dans la spécialisation du vol de bijoux. Mais Robie s’est acheté une conduite et, ayant combattu dans la Résistance, il coule maintenant des jours heureux dans le cadre ensoleillé de la Riviera. Mais voici que la police, alertée, le soupçonne d’être l’auteur de plusieurs vols sensationnels dont la technique correspond exactement à celle du « Chat ». Ayant échappé de justesse aux inspecteurs venus pour l’arrêter, Robie va tenter lui-même de s’innocenter en livrant le voleur à la police.
Critique
Bien sûr, il s’agit d’une comédie policière dont les répliques font rire, mais il n’en demeure pas moins que l’idée directrice d’Hitchcock l’a conduit à adopter la formule de Jacques Becker pour Touchez pas au grisbi : les voleurs sont fatigués. (…) On pourra s’étonner de ce que je vois dans To Catch a Thief, un film pessimiste ; il suffit, pour s’en rendre compte, d’écouter la musique tristement mélodique de Georgie Auld et Lyn Murray, et d’observer le jeu très inhabituel de Cary Grant. (…) Film peut-être mineur dans la carrière de l’homme qui sait le mieux ce qu’il veut obtenir et comment l’obtenir, To Catch a Thief satisfait pleinement tous les publics – et le plus snob comme le plus populaire – tout en étant l’un des plus cyniques qu’Hitchcock ait tournés. La dernière scène du film, entre Cary Grant et Grace Kelly, est un modèle du genre. C’est un curieux film qui renouvelle Hitchcock et le prolonge tout à la fois, un film divertissant, attachant et décidément très méchant à l’égard de la police française et des touristes américains.

CHARLIE CHRISTIAN is often reffered to as “the man who invented electric guitar”. Of course that isn’t true. He wasn’t even the first one to play jazz on the new instrument. But he certainly developed a way to do it that became default. He really invented the language for the electric guitar.
Born in 1916 not far for Dallas, Texas, he was only 23 when made his first record, Benny Goodman’s “Flying Home”, but, desoite his young age his original style was absolutely mature and definitive.
In a matter of hours Charlie changed forever the image of his instrument and influenced practically all present and future guitar players.
Less than three years later, not yet 26, he died of tubercolosis in New York, leaving behind an enormous empty space to be filled by a galore of guitar players all over the World who kept learning the lesson that some 30 sides of Benny Goodman records plus a very small bunch of other discs offered to them.
Nearly all of them are included in this two-volumes collection.
To be a little more complete, we added few tunes that the Goodman sextets never made in the studio but that survived thanks to recorded radio broadcasts
NOTES:
- “Gilly” is the same tune as “Gone with What Draft”. The latter was the title on the original 78 rpm disc (the version you’ll find on track 15).
- “Air Mail Special” is another title for “Good Enough To Keep” (cfr. volume 1)
- Tracks 19 and 20 are improvised performances on the changes of the shown titles. They were originally released as “Guy’s Got To Go” and “Lips Flips” respectively.

Georgie Auld (May 19, 1919 -- January 8, 1990) was a jazz tenor saxophonist, clarinetist, and bandleader.Auld was born John Altwerger in Toronto. He lived in the United States from the late 1920s onward, and was most noteworthy for his work with Bunny Berigan, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Erroll Garner, Dizzy Gillespie, Al Porcino, Billy Eckstine, Tiny Kahn, Frank Rosolino, and many others.
