Also from JS' collection, the somewhat rare extended version of this genuinely unsettling number from 2001 or so promoting blood donation. Presumably, the "surreal horror" tactic didn't work, because every such PIF since has been fairly simpering and congratulatory. Give me the "bleak look askance" tone of the "ten red bottles" PIF (which made a comeback around then too) anyday.
I'm in two minds about the extended version. It's obviously more gradual, and therefore creepier, but the 30 second version stopped on the words "constant drain", which is a much better punchline. Anyway, give blood, you fuckers. It only takes an hour, doesn't hurt a bit (unless the nurse is an idiot) and you get a biscuit and an excuse to take it easy the rest of the day. You don't get paid for it in this country, but you shouldn't have to be anyway.

Malcolm X: America today finds herself in a unique situation. Historically, revolutions are bloody. Oh, yes, they are. They haven’t never had a blood- less revolution, or a nonviolent revolution. That don’t happen even in Hollywood. You don’t have a revolution in which you love your enemy, and you don’t have a revolution in which you are begging the system of exploitation to integrate you into it. Revolutions overturn systems. Revolutions destroy systems.
A revolution is bloody, but America is in a unique position. She’s the only country in history in a position actually to become involved in a bloodless revolution. The Russian revolution was bloody, Chinese revolution was bloody, French revolution was bloody, Cuban revolution was bloody, and there was nothing more bloody than the American Revolution. But today this country can become involved in a revolution that won’t take bloodshed.
There is a world-wide revolution going on. It goes beyond Mississippi. It goes beyond Alabama. It goes beyond Harlem. What is it revolting against? The power structure. The American power structure? No. The French power structure? No. The English power structure? No. Then what power structure? An international Western power structure!

Glorious Revolution
The Glorious Revolution, also called the Revolution of 1688, was the overthrow of King James II of England (James VII of Scotland and James II of Ireland) by a union of English Parliamentarians with the Dutch stadtholder William III of Orange-Nassau (William of Orange). William's successful invasion of England with a Dutch fleet and army led to his ascending of the English throne as William III of England jointly with his wife Mary II of England, in conjunction with the documentation of the Bill of Rights 1689.
King James's policies of religious tolerance after 1685 met with increasing opposition by members of leading political circles, who were troubled by the king's Catholicism and his close ties with France. The crisis facing the king came to a head in 1688, with the birth of the King's son, James Francis Edward Stuart, on 10 June (Julian calendar). This changed the existing line of succession by displacing the heir presumptive, his daughter Mary, a Protestant and the wife of William of Orange, with young James as heir apparent. The establishment of a Roman Catholic dynasty in the kingdoms now seemed likely. Some of the most influential leaders of the Tories united with members of the opposition Whigs and set out to resolve the crisis by inviting William of Orange to England, which the stadtholder, who feared an Anglo-French alliance, had indicated as a condition for a military intervention.

Revolution
A revolution (from the Latin revolutio, "a turn around") is a fundamental change in political power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time when the population rises up in revolt against the current authorities. Aristotle described two types of political revolution:
Revolutions have occurred through human history and vary widely in terms of methods, duration, and motivating ideology. Their results include major changes in culture, economy, and socio-political institutions.
Scholarly debates about what does and does not constitute a revolution center on several issues. Early studies of revolutions primarily analyzed events in European history from a psychological perspective, but more modern examinations include global events and incorporate perspectives from several social sciences, including sociology and political science. Several generations of scholarly thought on revolutions have generated many competing theories and contributed much to the current understanding of this complex phenomenon.

"If you want to get anything done properly in this country, you've got to complain 'till you're blue in the mouth." Also from JS' collection, the somewhat rare extended version of this genuinely unsettling number from 2001 or so promoting blood donation. Presumably, the "surreal horror" tactic didn't work, because every such PIF since has been fairly simpering and congratulatory. Give me the "bleak look askance" tone of the "ten red bottles" PIF (which made a comeback around then too) anyday. I'm in two minds about the extended version. It's obviously more gradual, and therefore creepier, but the 30 second version stopped on the words "constant drain", which is a much better punchline. Anyway, give blood, you fuckers. Generally, this phrase of his was misused, even by those who were his supporters. But the statement was intended to encourage a paralyzed constituent of American culture to consider the range of options to which they were entitled—the "means." Washington was first called "Father of his Country" three years after the beginning of the Revolutionary War – a status he earned not only for his military accomplishments, but also because of the numerous virtues he was perceived to possess as a human being.
But within Washington's impeccable character, one quality stood out the most – a unique immunity to the corrupting effects of power, which stemmed from his selfless nature. "I often say of George Washington that he was one of the few in the whole history of the world who was not carried away by power," stated Robert Frost, "America's great poet-philosopher."
After overthrowing the tyranny of the British Empire, Americans were unwilling to trust anyone with the power of a central government, yet in George Washington they saw a man who had transcended human fallibility. "Had he lived in the days of idolatry," the Pennsylvania Journal noted in 1777, Washington would have been "worshipped as a god."
How could such a man ever abuse his power, let alone become a tyrant? Furthermore, if men like Washington exist and can be elected into power, perhaps the United States government would never follow in the footsteps of the hated British Empire.

After overthrowing the tyranny of the British Empire, Americans were unwilling to trust anyone with the power of a central government, yet in George Washington they saw a man who had transcended human fallibility. "Had he lived in the days of idolatry," the Pennsylvania Journal noted in 1777, Washington would have been "worshipped as a god."
How could such a man ever abuse his power, let alone become a tyrant? Furthermore, if men like Washington exist and can be elected into power, perhaps the United States government would never follow in the footsteps of the hated British Empire.

1901 – oil development begins in Iraq under Ottoman and British guidance
1915-1917 – Sykes-Picot Agreement, dividing the Middle East under British and French rule
1937 – Saddam Hussein born Tikrit, Iraq
1941 – Saddam’s uncle adopts him
1945 – World War II ends.
1958 – Baathist coup by army officers lead by Abd al-Karim Qasim against King Faisal of the Hashemite House
1959 – Saddam attempts to assassinate General Qasim with his commrades, but ultimately fails and goes on the run
1963 – coup against Qassim launched by Baathist partisans and military dissidents. Saddam returns to Iraq and begins using CIA resources to execute and torture Communist partisans in Baghdad.
1963 – A quasi bloodless coup removing Baathist officers is undertaken by General Arif.
1964 – Saddam imprisoned
1964 – Iraq National Oil Company (INOC) formed with Iraqi state backing after the ousting of pro-Soviet elements from the Baghdad government
1966 – Saddam escapes prison
1968 – bloodless coup launched by Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr & Saddam removing Abdul Rahman Arif. Saddam becomes deputy president after some time in shadows settling scores (e.g., shooting lawyer who had refused to release party funds to him earlier)
1979 – Saddam assumes full control of Iraq by declaring himself President, followed by a series of purges to eliminate dissent in the Baathist Regime
1979 – The Iranian Revolution is undertaken against US allies in the Islamic Republic of Iran by Shia fundamentalists.
1980-1988 – The Iran-Iraq War
1990 – The Oil Shock of 1990 nearly doubles oil prices as a result of disruption from the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait
1990-1991 – The Gulf War is fought between Iraq and an international coalition led by the USA, leading to Iraqi forces being expelled from Kuwait after a month long air campaign and 100 hour ground operation
2003 – US President George W. Bush leads a small coalition of forces to fully invade Iraq
2003 – Saddam Hussein is found alive in a spider-hole near the city of Tikrit
2006 – Saddam Hussein is executed after being found guilty of crimes against humanity by a special court in Iraq

Introduction to Ancient Greek History (CLCV 205)
In this lecture, Professor Donald Kagan discusses the emergence of a new style of warfare among the Greeks, the hoplite phalanx. After discussing the panoply of the hoplite solider and the method of fighting, he argues that this style of fighting came about early in the life of the polis. In addition, he shows that the phalanx was almost invincible on the field. At the lecture's conclusion, he answers several questions from students about hoplite warfare in the Greek world.

The House of Saud (Arabic: آل سعود Āl Saʻūd) is the ruling royal family of Saudi Arabia. The family has thousands of members. It is composed of the descendants of Muhammad bin Saud and his brothers, though the ruling faction of the family is primarily led by the descendants of Abdulaziz Ibn Saud.
The most influential member of the Royal family is the King of Saudi Arabia, currently King Salman. The throne was designed to pass from one son of the first king, Ibn Saud, to another. His deputy Muqrin bin Abdulaziz Al Saud is also from the ruling House of Saud, and the king-appointed cabinet includes more members of the royal family. While the monarchy is hereditary now, future Saudi kings will be chosen by a committee of Saudi princes, in line with a 2006 Royal Decree.[1]
The family is estimated to be composed of 15,000 members, but the majority of the power and wealth is possessed by a group of only about 2,000.[2][3]
The House of Saud has gone through three phases: the First Saudi State, the Second Saudi State, and the modern nation of Saudi Arabia. The First Saudi State marked the expansion of Wahhabism. The Second Saudi State was marked with continuous infighting. Modern Saudi Arabia wields considerable influence in the Middle East.
