I don’t grow medlars (Mespilus germanica), but last week’s sight of Airfield Gardens’ gnarly old tree, its twisting branches heavily laden with these strangely medieval-looking fruits, has made me long to do so ... Or roasted medlars, sweetened with a smear of honey ... Another is the Chilean Guava or strawberry myrtle (Myrtus ugni/ Ugni molinae), a compact evergreen, ornamental shrub (1m-2m x 1m) that’s native to South America ... ....

Dear Carol. Are there various kinds of myrtle? I have quite a bit of it as groundcover, but it doesn't have much oomph. In other places I see plantings that look a little perkier, and I am wondering if there are other varieties that look better. Is there a way to care for it to make it look healthier? -- N.S., Fayetteville. Dear N.S. ... It is native to Europe ... True myrtle, Myrtus communis, isn't hardy in Central New York ... minor, however ... ....

first, the White Potato Vine (Solanum jasminoides), barely blooming due to the heavy shade of the massive Ash tree above and then the climbing rose ‘Darlow’s Enigma’, in constant bloom in spite of it ... Spirea, dwarf Pittosporum, white Camellia, Dwarf (true) Myrtle (Myrtus communis ‘Compacta’), Variegated Hydrangea, White Azaleas and several forms of fern (Autumn, Asparagus and River fern) complete the long walk of green and white....
