Humans have a powerful capacity to process visual information, skills that date far back in our evolutionary lineage. And since the advent of science, we have employed intricate visual strategies to communicate data, often utilizing design principles that draw on these basic cognitive skills. In a modern world where we have far more data than we can process, the practice of data visualization has gained even more importance. From scientific visualization to pop infographics, designers are increasingly tasked with incorporating data into the media experience. Data has emerged as such a critical part of modern life that it has entered into the realm of art, where data-driven visual experiences challenge viewers to find personal meaning from a sea of information, a task that is increasingly present in every aspect of our information-infused lives.

To scan, focus, to see at varying scales of space and time,
to approximate its way through,
to see multiplicity, how things happen, move, act, interact,
to see with fresh eyes, unhindered by self-confirming words and expectations.
And the thinking eye acts, makes something of seeing and reasoning,
produces, executes, gets on with it.
The thinking eye often sees best without words,
reasons about what things do, cultivates focus and serenity,
has a sense of the relevant, knows what good evidence look like,
and has a taste for excellence.

WATCH IN HIGH QUALITY
The iPhone platform elegantly solves the design problem of small screens by greatly intensifying the information resolution of each displayed page. Small screens, as on traditional cell phones, show very little information per screen, which in turn leads to deep hierarchies of stacked-up thin information--too often leaving users with "Where am I?" puzzles. Better to have users looking over material adjacent in space rather than stacked in time.
To do so requires increasing the information resolution of the screen by the hardware (higher resolution screens) and by screen design (eliminating screen-hogging computer administrative debris, and distributing information adjacent in space).
This video shows some of the resolution-enhancing methods of the iPhone, along with a few places for improvements in resolution.

Edward Rolf Tufte (
/ˈtʌfti/; born 1942) is an American statistician and professor emeritus of political science, statistics, and computer science at Yale University. He is noted for his writings on information design and as a pioneer in the field of data visualization.
Edward Rolf Tufte was born in 1942 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Virginia Tufte and Edward E. Tufte. He grew up in Beverly Hills, California, and graduated from Beverly Hills High School. He received a BA and MS in statistics from Stanford University and a PhD in political science from Yale. His dissertation, completed in 1968, was entitled The Civil Rights Movement and Its Opposition. He was then hired by Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School, where he taught courses in political economy and data analysis while publishing three quantitatively inclined political science books.
In 1975, while at Princeton, Tufte was asked to teach a statistics course to a group of journalists who were visiting the school to study economics. He developed a set of readings and lectures on statistical graphics, which he further developed in joint seminars he subsequently taught with renowned statistician John Tukey, a pioneer in the field of information design. These course materials became the foundation for his first book on information design, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information.

Edward Tufte: Larkin's Twig, Shadow Studies
steel 32' high footprint = 59' x 66' x 70' It is called "Larkin's Twig" because several years ago Graham Larkin, then a graduate student in Art History at Harvard and now a Fellow at Stanford, worked as my intellectual assistant, teaching me some art history and providing materials to read and think about in a kind of correspondence course and tutorial. When Graham came to visit, he would bring a little something each time, such as a book or, once, a beautiful twig about 12 inches high with a very nice natural geometry and graceful, but not mechanically graceful, curves. Edward Tufte: Rocket Science Sculpture, Installation
Rocket Science, a new landscape artwork, was recently installed in a rolling meadow. The piece is large, about 32 feet (or 10 meters) hight and 72 feet (22 meters) long, and is constructed from 48,000 pounds (22,000 kilograms) of rusting steel. 32 Sheep Visit Edward Tufte's Artwork
32 sheep visited our sculpture field; here is a film showing sheep interaction with many of the pieces. Encouraging visitors to interact with the art--and even to touch the art works--is a current trend in museum installations. The interactions in this case include rubbing up against the artworks and eating the grass around the pieces. -

Edward Tufte: Escaping Flatland Artwork, Sunlight Studies
Escaping Flatland is a large stainless steel sculpture, consisting of two units, 12 feet high and covering an area approximately 15 x 30 feet. The total weight (entirely stainless steel) is 8,400 pounds. Each unit consists of four plates, 2.5" thick. Escaping Flatland is one of a series of sculptures by Edward Tufte, based on ideas in his books on information architecture. Escaping Flatland reacts wonderfully to changes in time of day, the season, and the surrounding landscape. Small screens, as on traditional cell phones, show very little information per screen, which in turn leads to deep hierarchies of stacked-up thin information--too often leaving users with "Where am I?" puzzles. Better to have users looking over material adjacent in space rather than stacked in time.
To do so requires increasing the information resolution of the screen by the hardware (higher resolution screens) and by screen design (eliminating screen-hogging computer administrative debris, and distributing information adjacent in space).
This video shows some of the resolution-enhancing methods of the iPhone, along with a few places for improvements in resolution.

It is called "Larkin's Twig" because several years ago Graham Larkin, then a graduate student in Art History at Harvard and now a Fellow at Stanford, worked as my intellectual assistant, teaching me some art history and providing materials to read and think about in a kind of correspondence course and tutorial. When Graham came to visit, he would bring a little something each time, such as a book or, once, a beautiful twig about 12 inches high with a very nice natural geometry and graceful, but not mechanically graceful, curves. For years, Larkin's twig sat in an honored place in our library and then in our kitchen.
Why not make the twig 32 times bigger? How will it scale up? Should X, Y, and Z scale up differently? (Yes) What should the material be? How will the steel rust? What parts should be revised, extended, modified, reshaped? How is it to hit the land? How will it belong in the natural environment of the landscape? In relation to trees, land contours, and other pieces in the field? What is the proper orientation of the piece and the resulting cast shadows? How will shadows vary in different seasons of the year? How can mock-ups be built to test ideas out? What about structural engineering issues? A Cooper's Hawk perched on a two-thirds scale wooden mockup, will that happen on the steel and do we add a bird-perch? What does it all mean? And so on.
Any good 3-dimensional sculpture cannot be captured by one-eyed flatland photographs. This can be seen very strongly with Richard Serra's amazing work at Dia-Beacon. One of many tests of a piece is that photographs do little justice to the reality. That is, you have to be there. How else can volumes in the air be seen?

Escaping Flatland is a large stainless steel sculpture, consisting of two units, 12 feet high and covering an area approximately 15 x 30 feet. The total weight (entirely stainless steel) is 8,400 pounds. Each unit consists of four plates, 2.5" thick.
Escaping Flatland is one of a series of sculptures by Edward Tufte, based on ideas in his books on information architecture. Escaping Flatland reacts wonderfully to changes in time of day, the season, and the surrounding landscape. As a consequence, the work always appears fresh and new and, at the same time, part of the natural world.
Escaping Flatland is hand-finished, surfaced by means of a double-action grinder. The multiple planes of the sculpture respond intensely to changes in light and changes in the observer's position. All kinds of beautiful painted color fields routinely appear, as the light reflected and refracted from the surface endlessly responds to the weather, season, and natural environment.
