Andrew Jackson (March 15, 1767 – June 8, 1845) was the seventh President of the United States (1829–37). He was born near the end of the colonial era, somewhere near the then-unmarked border between North and South Carolina, into a recently immigrated Scots-Irish farming family of relatively modest means. During the American Revolutionary War Jackson, whose family supported the revolutionary cause, acted as a courier. He was captured, at age 13, and mistreated by his British captors. He later became a lawyer. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, and then to the U.S. Senate. In 1801, Jackson was appointed colonel in the Tennessee militia, which became his political as well as military base. Jackson owned hundreds of slaves who worked on the Hermitage plantation which he acquired in 1804. He killed a man in a duel in 1806, over a matter of honor regarding his wife Rachel. Jackson gained national fame through his role in the War of 1812, most famously where he won a decisive victory over the main British invasion army at the Battle of New Orleans. In response to conflict with the Seminole in Spanish Florida, Jackson invaded the territory in 1818. This led directly to the Adams–Onís Treaty, which formally transferred Florida from Spain to the United States.
Jackson may refer to:
Andrew is the English form of a given name common in many countries. In the 1990s it was among the top ten most popular names for boys in English-speaking countries. In Italian, the equivalent to "Andrew" is "Andrea", though "Andrea" is feminine in most other languages. "Andrew" is frequently shortened to "Andy" or "Drew". The word is derived from the Greek: Ανδρέας, Andreas, itself related to Ancient Greek: ἀνήρ/ἀνδρός aner/andros, "man" (as opposed to "woman"), thus meaning "manly" and, as consequence, "strong", "courageous", and "warrior". In the King James Bible, the Greek "Ἀνδρέας" is translated as Andrew.
In 2000, the name Andrew was the second most popular name in Australia. In 1999, it was the 19th most common name, while in 1940, it was the 31st most common name. Andrew was the first most popular boys name in the Northern Territory in 2003 to 2015 and continuing. In Victoria, Andrew was the first most popular name for a boy in the 1970s.
Andrew was the 20th most popular name chosen for male infants in 2005. Andrew was the 16th most popular name for infants in British Columbia in 2004, the 17th most popular name in 2003, and the 19th most popular name in 2002. In 2001, it was the 18th most common name. From 1999 – 2003, Andrew was the sixth most often chosen name for a boy.

A biography of America's seventh president, ANDREW JACKSON: GOOD, EVIL AND THE PRESIDENCY explores whether Americans should celebrate Jackson or apologize for him. Viewers discover that Jackson fought in the Revolutionary War when he was 13 years old and that he used the skills learned in battle to kill a man over a gambling debt; that Jackson led the American army to the most surprising victory in its history in the Battle of New Orleans, but that he also launched an unauthorized invasion of Florida; that Jackson was the first great champion of the common white man and owned more than a hundred black Americans; that Jackson dramatically expanded the United States and did so by brutally wresting vast regions of the south from Native Americans; that Jackson, in one of the boldest political ...
In which John Green teaches you about the presidency of Andrew Jackson So how did a president with astoundingly bad fiscal policies end up on the $20 bill? That's a question we can't answer, but we can tell you how Jackson got to be president, and how he changed the country when he got the job. Jackson's election was more democratic than any previous presidential election. More people were able to vote, and they picked a doozie. Jackson was a well-known war hero, and he was elected over his longtime political enemy, John Quincy Adams. Once Jackson was in office, he did more to expand executive power than any of the previous occupants of the White House. He used armed troops to collect taxes, refused to enforce legislation and supreme court legislation, and hired and fired his staff based o...
According to Professor Amy H. Sturgis, Andrew Jackson frequently appears in top ten lists of great Presidents of the United States. The following reasons are often given to justify Jackson's high ranking among Presidents: 1) Jackson was a champion of the common man 2) Son of the frontier 3) A war hero 4) An enemy of the elite 5) A champion of the United States Union. Sturgis argues that most of these reasons are in fact myths when they are analyzed in greater depth. For instance, Jackson engaged in several unauthorized activities during war like invading foreign territory that he was not authorized to invade and executing non-US citizens he was not authorized to execute. Additionally, many of the reform efforts that came out of the so-called Jacksonian revolution made Jackson appear as...

Marcel the 13-year-old music journalist interviews Andrew Jackson Jihad at The Crepe Place in Santa Cruz, California. Special thanks to Marc, the band's tour manager who filmed the interview, and Launch Brigade for helping upload the interview. After we did the interview, me and lead singer Sean headed over to the local skate park to do some shredding. The next morning, we all met up yet again to have some fun down at the arcade at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Me, Sean, Ben and the band's tour manager (who filmed the interview) played a couple rounds of air hockey for some footage they were shooting for an upcoming music video. After that we then headed over to the local record shop Metavinyl to pick up some goodies. It was overall just an unforgettable experience that I will be foreve...

I talked to Sean Bonnette from the band Andrew Jackson Jihad. Andrew Jackson Jihad, or AJJ, is one of the most influential folk punk bands today, with some of the most wonderfully cynical lyrics I've ever heard. Last September saw the release of their newest album, Can't Maintain, on Asian Man Records. The whole interview can be found here: http://www.punkcdsampler.com/sean-bonnette-interview.html This interview was done live during my PunkCDSampler Live Show, broadcasted on my site.

Jampoler chronicles how President Andrew Jackson, hoping for new and profitable American trade relationships, dispatched an unemployed ship owner and merchant with no diplomatic experience on a secret mission to negotiate with Eastern potentates in their courts.
