Step by step instructions on how to apply a tourniquet to both the leg and arm. We also go over when to use a tourniquet and when not to. Please note that in the video I place the tourniquets some what close to the joints and not on the thickest part of the limb. This was done for the comfort of my volunteers. A little higher up on the limb would be preferred.

What is a tourniquet? I wanted to do a video and talk through the details on what exactly a TQ is. A tourniquet is a must have for you trauma kit or IFAK. You have to be able to stop major bleeding and the arms/legs are generally unprotected!

A tourniquet is a constricting or compressing device used to control venous and arterial circulation to an extremity for a period of time. Pressure is applied circumferentially upon the skin and underlying tissues of a limb; this pressure is transferred to the walls of vessels, causing them to become temporarily occluded. It is generally used as a tool for a medical professional in applications such as cannulation or to stem the flow of traumatic bleeding, especially by military medics.
The earliest known usage of a tourniquet dates back to 199 BCE-500 CE. It was used by the Romans to control bleeding, especially during amputations. These tourniquets were narrow straps made of bronze, using only leather for comfort.
In 1718, French surgeon Jean Louis Petit developed a screw device for occluding blood flow in surgical sites. Before this invention, the “tourniquet” was a simple garrot, tightened by twisting a rod (thus its name tourniquet, from "tourner" = turn).
Joseph Lister is credited for being the first to use a tourniquet device to create a bloodless surgical field in 1864. He also recommended exsanguinations prior to tourniquet application by limb elevation. In 1873, Friedrich von Esmarch developed a rubber bandage that would both control bleeding and exsanguinate. This device is known as Esmarch's bandage for surgical haemostasis or Eschmarch's Tourniquet. At the time this device was superior to Petit’s device as there were no screws to loosen or cloth to tear. In 1881, Richard von Volkmann showed that limb paralysis can occur from the use of the Esmarch tourniquet.

Marilyn Manson (born Brian Hugh Warner; January 5, 1969) is an American musician, artist and former music journalist known for his controversial stage persona and image as the lead singer of the eponymous band Marilyn Manson. His stage name was formed from juxtaposing the names of two 1960s American cultural icons, namely actress Marilyn Monroe and convicted multiple murder convictCharles Manson as a critical and, simultaneously, laudatory appraisal of America and its peculiar culture. The seemingly outrageous styles for which he models and the controversy surrounding his lyrics have led to his public appeal.
Marilyn Manson was born in Canton, Ohio. He is the only child of Barbra Warner (maiden name Wyer) and Hugh Warner. Manson is of Polish and German descent on his father's side, and is a fourth cousin twice removed of Conservative commentator Pat Buchanan. In his autobiography The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, he detailed his grandfather's sexual fetishes (including bestiality and sadomasochism) which led to the forming of Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids.

Step by step instructions on how to apply a tourniquet to both the leg and arm. We also go over when to use a tourniquet and when not to. Please note that in the video I place the tourniquets some what close to the joints and not on the thickest part of the limb. This was done for the comfort of my volunteers. A little higher up on the limb would be preferred. -

SWAT Tourniquet Military Application
Simulated Graphic Event. Working in Tactical Gloves. This video shows some components of TCCC and casualty management using the SWAT-T (as a tourniquet, and separately as a pressure dressing - applied over hemostatic agent). Pressure Dressings may be applied after tourniquet placement - which may allow tourniquet to be taken down by a medic (Trial Tourniquet), or a pressure dressing may be placed primarily for less severe bleeding (venous/small vessel). Wound Packing may be necessary to help control bleeding. Can be done with standard gauze or more preferred a hemostatic agent - such as Combat Gauze depicted in the video. -

This video shows some components of TCCC and casualty management using the SWAT-T (as a tourniquet, and separately as a pressure dressing - applied over hemostatic agent).
Pressure Dressings may be applied after tourniquet placement - which may allow tourniquet to be taken down by a medic (Trial Tourniquet), or a pressure dressing may be placed primarily for less severe bleeding (venous/small vessel).
Wound Packing may be necessary to help control bleeding. Can be done with standard gauze or more preferred a hemostatic agent - such as Combat Gauze depicted in the video.
