It spans approximately 394,000 square kilometres (152,000 sq mi) and has a population of 45.7 million (2009). The capital of the province is Kunming, formerly also known as Yunnan. Yunnan is famous for its tourism destinations such as Lijiang City, Xishuangbanna, Dali and Shangri-la. The province borders Vietnam, Laos and Burma. Ethnic minorities in Yunnan account for about 34 percent of its total population. Major ethnic groups include Yi, Bai, Hani, Zhuang, Dai and Miao.

The Old Town of Lijiang is well-preserved old city of the Naxi minority. It is listed by UNESCO as World Heritages Site, quote: "Lijiang is an exceptional ancient town set in a dramatic landscape which represents the harmonious fusion of different cultural traditions to produce an urban landscape of outstanding quality."

Dali was capital of two large kingdoms from the 8th and 10th centuries, until conquered by the Mongols in the 12th century. The present Old Town was rebuilt by the Ming dynasty in the beginning of the 14th century. Outside of the Old Town are the famous Three Pagodas, from 9th-10th century.

Forestry police in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Tuesday rescued three wild Asian elephants that had been trapped in a hilltop pond for two days.
The police rushed to the site after receiving a report from villagers on Sunday, only to find the three animals, two adults and one baby, struggling in the five-meter-deep concrete pond while several other elephants were standing beside and reaching out their noises to help.
The rescuers had to postpone their operation to Monday due to heavy rain and the threat of attack from other elephants.
After accessing the situation with helicopters and drones, the police decided to drive away the other elephants with firecrackers and break one side of the pond to discharge water.
Bananas and other food were also sent to the trapped animals.
The rescuers started to break one side of the pond with an excavator on Tuesday and finally freed the animals in the afternoon.
The three elephants walked out of the pond and into the nearby forest.
The Asian elephant is a first-class national protected animal in China. It estimated that about 300 wild Asian elephants livee in Yunnan Province.

Travel video about destination Yunnan in China.
Kunming is located in the Chinese province of Yunnan in southwest China.The Buddhist temple of Ykan Ton Si dates back to the Tang Dynasty. The design of the city’s largest temple complex was influenced by many diverse ethnic groups. The highlight of the complex is a lake in the middle of which a number of bridges lead to an octagonal pavilion. The Temple of Total Penetration (yes, that’s its name!) is a tranquil and peaceful haven amid the busy alleys of Kunming’s old town.In the west of Yunnan Province, there are magnificent views from Xi Shan Mountain. Across Dianchi Lake and nestled among the rocks are numerous temples that were once the scene of ritual sacrifice. On the downward journey, the temples loom larger and larger while earthenware images of Buddha depict various stages of life.Yunnan’s most famous site is the unique Stone Forest of Shilin. Its limestone rock originated from a long since dried–up ocean, when the elements set to work on creating its fantastic and bizarre forms. The most amazing formations were given dramatic names such as The Sea of Fire, Dragon’s Tooth and Heavenly Sword. Pagodas, columns and strange flowers appear to rise from the rock and to facilitate access tunnels and paths have been cut into the rock face.The Venice of the Far East is the nickname of the ancient Chinese city of Lijiang, in the northwest of Yunnan Province. The picturesque centre of the old town of Dayan is an architectural gem. Three rivers and several small creeks flow through the historic cit and there are various splendid stone bridges date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties.Bao Shan is a typical village of the region and is just as it was hundreds of years ago with farmers slowly leading their ox wagons through the village. The houses were built over a period of more than 200 year between the Ming and Qing Dynasties, in 14 and 16 A.D. Yunnan is situated in a mountainous area, with high elevations in the northwest and low elevations in the southeast. Most of the population lives in the eastern part of the province. In the west, the altitude can vary from the mountain peaks to river valleys as much as 3,000 metres (9,800 ft). Yunnan is rich in natural resources and has the largest diversity of plant life in China. Of the approximately 30,000 species of higher plants in China, Yunnan has perhaps 17,000 or more. Yunnan's reserves of aluminium, lead, zinc and tin are the largest in China, and there are also major reserves of copper and nickel.
The Han Empire first recorded diplomatic relations with the province at the end of the 2nd century BCE. It became the seat of a Tibeto-Burman-speaking kingdom of Nanzhao in the 8th century CE. Nanzhao was multi-ethnic, but the elite most likely spoke a northern dialect of Yi. The Mongols conquered the region in the 13th century, with local control exercised by warlords until the 1930s. As with other parts of China's southwest, Japanese occupation in the north during World War II forced a migration of majority Han people into the region. Ethnic minorities in Yunnan account for about 34 percent of its total population. Major ethnic groups include Yi, Bai, Hani, Zhuang, Dai and Miao.

Police Rescue Three Elephants Trapped in Hilltop Pond in Yunnan
Forestry police in southwest China's Yunnan Province on Tuesday rescued three wild Asian elephants that had been trapped in a hilltop pond for two days. The police rushed to the site after receiving a report from villagers on Sunday, only to find the three animals, two adults and one baby, struggling in the five-meter-deep concrete pond while several other elephants were standing beside and reaching out their noises to help. The rescuers had to postpone their operation to Monday due to heavy rain and the threat of attack from other elephants. After accessing the situation with helicopters and drones, the police decided to drive away the other elephants with firecrackers and break one side of the pond to discharge water. The Asian elephant is a first-class national protected animal in China. It estimated that about 300 wild Asian elephants livee in Yunnan Province.

A travel agency in Yunnan province has been forced to suspend operations after one of its employees was filmed unleashing a rant on a bus full of visitors because they weren't spending enough at scenic spots.
The guide, Chen Chunyuan, had her license revoked and her employer, the Kunming Fenghua Travel Agency, was fined 20,000 yuan.
The ordeal went down on April 12 as the group was traveling from Lijiang to Kunming and was headed for Xishuangbanna, according to a report on People's Daily. Video footage showing the guide 'venting frustration' on the travelers because they failed to spend enough money at a jewelry shop went viral after being posted on May 1.
"The bus is prepared for tourists who have moral standards and conscience. If you do not have these, you are not fit to sit here," Chen had said angrily.
"If each of you cannot spend 3,000 to 4,000 yuan, we will cancel the trip. Your flight tickets home will also not be covered in this trip as well," she went on.
"You need to at least spend for the sake of your conscience. If you cannot do that, there will be retributions coming to you," she added.
The China National Tourism Administration investigated the incident as soon as it began circulating online.
Tour guides commonly arrange deals with shops at scenic spots and encourage travelers to spend there as a way to earn commission. In February, a Harbin woman complained that a tour guide in Hong Kong refused to take the group to Disneyland unless each person spent 4,000 RMB at a jewelry store.
