Philip Glass - The Photographer
"The Photographer is a chamber opera by composer Philip Glass that is based on the homicide trial of photographer Eadweard Muybridge. The opera is based on words drawn from the trial as well as Muybridge's letters to his wife. Commissioned by the Holland Festival, the opera was first performed in 1982 at the Royal Palace in Amsterdam."

Music-drama based on the scandal-filled life of the photographer Edweard Muybridge, whose motion studies of people and animals made him famous, and whose murder of his wife's alleged lover made him notorious. The Phographer utilizes drama, dance and slides of Muybridge's photographs. Act I is a 20 minute play with incidental music recounting the circumstances under which Muybridge became a murderer and his subsequent trial and aquittal. Act II is a violin solo with orchestra, accompanied by a slide show of Muybridge's photographs. Act III is a dance involving all characters.

He had been diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and, shortly after this film was made, he could no longer use his large format cameras. He made his very last photograph the year this film was released.

Philip Glass dedicated album "Photographer" (1983) to Eadweard Muybridge.
Eadweard Muybridge (April 9, 1830 May 8, 1904) was a British-born photographer, known primarily for his early use of multiple cameras to capture motion. Muybridge was born Edward James Muggeridge at Kingston-on-Thames, England. He is believed to have changed his first name to match that of King Eadweard as shown on the plinth of the Kingston coronation stone, which was re-erected in Kingston in 1850. Muggeridge became Muygridge and then Muybridge after he had emigrated to America.
Muybridge started his career as a publisher's agent and bookseller, but developed an interest in photography that seems to have been boosted when he was recovering in England after nearly being killed in a stagecoach crash. It has been suggested that he acted as an assistant to landscape photographer Carleton E. Watkins, but there is little evidence of this. Muybridge began to build his reputation in 1867 with photos of Yosemite and San Francisco (many of the Yosemite photographs reproduced the same scenes taken by Watkins). Muybridge quickly became famous for his landscape photographs, which showed the grandeur and expansiveness of the West. The images were published under the pseudonym Helios.
In 1872, businessman and former California governor Leland Stanford hired Muybridge to settle a question (not a bet, as is popularly believed): Stanford claimed, contrary to popular belief, that there was a point in a horse's full gallop when all four hooves were off the ground. By 1878, Muybridge had successfully photographed a horse in fast motion using a series of fifty cameras. Each of the cameras were arranged along a track parallel to the horse's, and each of the camera shutters were controlled by trip wires which were triggered by the horse's hooves. This series of photos, taken at what is now Stanford University, is called The Horse in Motion, and shows that, indeed, the hooves all leave the ground, although not at the point of full extension forward and back, as contemporary illustrators tended to imagine, but rather at the moment when all the hooves are tucked under the horse, as it switches from "pulling" from the front legs to "pushing" from the back legs.
In 1874, still living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Muybridge discovered that his wife had a lover, a Major Harry Larkyns. On October 17, 1874, he sought out Larkyns; said, "Good evening, Major, my name is Muybridge and here is the answer to the letter you sent my wife"; and shot and killed him. He was put on trial for the killing, but acquitted of the killing on the grounds that it was "justifiable homicide."
Muybridge thought his wife's son had been fathered by Larkyns (although, as an adult, the young man had a remarkable resemblance to Muybridge). After the acquittal, Muybridge left the U.S. for a time and photographed in Central America, returning in 1877.
Later, he conducted research in order to improve the chemistry of his development methods to better capture motion in his photography. Hoping to capitalize upon the considerable public attention those pictures drew, Muybridge invented the Zoopraxiscope, a machine similar to the Zoetrope, but that projected the images so the public could see realistic motion. The system was, in many ways, a precursor to the development of the motion picture.
Muybridge used this technique many times to photograph people and animals to study their movement. The people were often photographed in little or no clothing in a variety of undertakings. From boxing, to walking down stairs, and even small children walking to their mother were sufficiently interesting to Muybridge to be the subject of his photographs. In any case, Muybridge's work stands near the beginning of the science of biomechanics and the mechanics of athletics.
Similar setups of carefully timed multiple cameras are used in modern special effects photography with the opposite goal: capturing changing camera angles with little or no movement of the subject.
Eadweard Muybridge returned to his native England in 1894 and died in 1904 in Kingston-on-the-Thames while living at the home of his cousin Catherine Smith, Park View, 2 Liverpool Road. He was cremated and his ashes interred at Woking.

Philip Glass
Philip Morris Glass (born January 31, 1937) is a classical American composer. He is considered one of the most influential music makers of the late 20th century. His music is also often controversially described as minimal music, along with the work of the other "major minimalists" La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Reich.
Glass has distanced himself from the "minimalist" label, describing himself instead as a composer of "music with repetitive structures". Though his early mature music shares much with what is normally called "minimalist", he has since evolved stylistically. Currently, he describes himself as a "classicist", pointing out that he is trained in harmony and counterpoint and studied such composers as Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with Nadia Boulanger.
Glass has founded his namesake musical group, the Philip Glass Ensemble, with which he still performs on keyboards, and has written operas, musical theatre works, ten symphonies, eleven concertos, solo works, chamber music including seven string quartets and instrumental sonatas, and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards.

Ed Sheeran
Edward Christopher "Ed" Sheeran (born 17 February 1991) is an English singer-songwriter and musician. He was born in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire and raised in Framlingham, Suffolk. After dropping out of school at 16, he moved to London the following year, in 2008, to pursue a career in music. In early 2011, Sheeran independently released the extended play, No. 5 Collaborations Project, which caught the attention of Elton John and Jamie Foxx. After signing with Asylum Records, his debut album, + (read as "plus"), was released on 9 September 2011 and has since been certified six-times platinum in the UK. The album contains the single "The A Team", which earned him the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically. In 2012, Sheeran won the Brit Awards for Best British Male Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act.
Sheeran's popularity abroad began in 2012. In the US, he made a guest appearance on Taylor Swift's fourth studio album, Red. "The A Team" was nominated for Song of the Year at the 2013 Grammy Awards, where he performed the song with Elton John. He spent much of 2013 opening for Swift's The Red Tour in North America dates. In late 2013, he performed three sold-out shows at New York's Madison Square Garden as a headline act. He was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2014 Grammy Awards.

Plot: It's 1963 in the Australian outback and master tracker Billy Benn is being chased by the police for the murder of his wife's lover. Can Benn escape and find solace in the outback or will the police led by fellow tracker Teddy Egan catch up to him? Some twenty years later the police are in full force again running through the forest but this time they are not chasing a criminal, instead it is a race against time. A 6-year-old girl has been lost and stranded deep in the forest already for nine days and her survival, if possible, will depend on how quickly authorities can locate her. Once again the police will rely on the keen sense of a tracker for success. Where others see only a forest, Musgrave spots clues and signs as he reads the environment like a map. Similarly the police have relied on the trackers' mysterious abilities to break up a drug ring, rescue a stranded photographer in the desert, and find a young cowboy who disappeared during a stampede. Trackers have been around for centuries and when the police realized that it would be interesting to put them to use in tracking escaped and missing persons, Australia was still a British penal colony. But in this age of GPS, 4x4 vehicles and helicopters, are we letting go of something more fundamental - an intuitive knowledge linking man to nature? Featured in this film will be some of the last great trackers of the outback, including George Musgrave, Teddy Egan Jangala, Tommy George, and Mitjili Gibson. We will bring their most dramatic stories to life by recreating their gripping adventures deep in the unknown corners of the Australian Outback, traversing lush rain forests and wild rivers, magnificent gorges and deep water holes, dry savannas, and red deserts in search of the soon-to-be lost Aboriginal art of the tracker.

Eadweard Muybridge (April 9, 1830 May 8, 1904) was a British-born photographer, known primarily for his early use of multiple cameras to capture motion. Muybridge was born Edward James Muggeridge at Kingston-on-Thames, England. He is believed to have changed his first name to match that of King Eadweard as shown on the plinth of the Kingston coronation stone, which was re-erected in Kingston in 1850. Philip Glass dedicated album "Photographer" (1983) to Eadweard Muybridge.
Eadweard Muybridge (April 9, 1830 May 8, 1904) was a British-born photographer, known primarily for his early use of multiple cameras to capture motion. Muybridge was born Edward James Muggeridge at Kingston-on-Thames, England. He is believed to have changed his first name to match that of King Eadweard as shown on the plinth of the Kingston coronation stone, which was re-erected in Kingston in 1850. Muggeridge became Muygridge and then Muybridge after he had emigrated to America.
Muybridge started his career as a publisher's agent and bookseller, but developed an interest in photography that seems to have been boosted when he was recovering in England after nearly being killed in a stagecoach crash. It has been suggested that he acted as an assistant to landscape photographer Carleton E. Watkins, but there is little evidence of this. Muybridge began to build his reputation in 1867 with photos of Yosemite and San Francisco (many of the Yosemite photographs reproduced the same scenes taken by Watkins). Muybridge quickly became famous for his landscape photographs, which showed the grandeur and expansiveness of the West. The images were published under the pseudonym Helios.
In 1872, businessman and former California governor Leland Stanford hired Muybridge to settle a question (not a bet, as is popularly believed): Stanford claimed, contrary to popular belief, that there was a point in a horse's full gallop when all four hooves were off the ground. By 1878, Muybridge had successfully photographed a horse in fast motion using a series of fifty cameras. Each of the cameras were arranged along a track parallel to the horse's, and each of the camera shutters were controlled by trip wires which were triggered by the horse's hooves. This series of photos, taken at what is now Stanford University, is called The Horse in Motion, and shows that, indeed, the hooves all leave the ground, although not at the point of full extension forward and back, as contemporary illustrators tended to imagine, but rather at the moment when all the hooves are tucked under the horse, as it switches from "pulling" from the front legs to "pushing" from the back legs.
In 1874, still living in the San Francisco Bay Area, Muybridge discovered that his wife had a lover, a Major Harry Larkyns. On October 17, 1874, he sought out Larkyns; said, "Good evening, Major, my name is Muybridge and here is the answer to the letter you sent my wife"; and shot and killed him. He was put on trial for the killing, but acquitted of the killing on the grounds that it was "justifiable homicide."
Muybridge thought his wife's son had been fathered by Larkyns (although, as an adult, the young man had a remarkable resemblance to Muybridge). After the acquittal, Muybridge left the U.S. for a time and photographed in Central America, returning in 1877.
Later, he conducted research in order to improve the chemistry of his development methods to better capture motion in his photography. Hoping to capitalize upon the considerable public attention those pictures drew, Muybridge invented the Zoopraxiscope, a machine similar to the Zoetrope, but that projected the images so the public could see realistic motion. The system was, in many ways, a precursor to the development of the motion picture.
Muybridge used this technique many times to photograph people and animals to study their movement. The people were often photographed in little or no clothing in a variety of undertakings. From boxing, to walking down stairs, and even small children walking to their mother were sufficiently interesting to Muybridge to be the subject of his photographs. In any case, Muybridge's work stands near the beginning of the science of biomechanics and the mechanics of athletics.
Similar setups of carefully timed multiple cameras are used in modern special effects photography with the opposite goal: capturing changing camera angles with little or no movement of the subject.
Eadweard Muybridge returned to his native England in 1894 and died in 1904 in Kingston-on-the-Thames while living at the home of his cousin Catherine Smith, Park View, 2 Liverpool Road. He was cremated and his ashes interred at Woking.

This video is dedicated to the woman I was dating back in 1985 who suggested we drop acid and watch a movie called Koyaanisqatsi. I've never been the same since. I'm still in love with that woman to this day. This was the closing night, September 4th, 2011 at the Carmel Valley Theatre, Carmel CA. I saw the night before with my parents, with a full ensemble, and decided I needed to come back the next day by myself. Hard to believe Mr. Glass is 74 years old, go Philip.
This video is dedicated to the woman I was dating back in 1985 who suggested we drop acid and watch a movie called Koyaanisqatsi. I've never been the same since. I'm still in love with that woman to this day.
I strongly urge anyone and everyone to watch Philip Glass' masterpiece Koyaanisqatsi, I saw it performed live by Philip with the movie behind him 10 years ago, it was just as mindblowing then. WARNING - PREPARE TO BE DISTURBED:

It holds an important place in Glass's repertory - not only historically (as the longest and most ambitious concert piece for the Philip Glass Ensemble) but aesthetically as well. Music in Twelve Parts is both a massive theoretical exercise and a deeply engrossing work of art.
In the past, Glass vociferously objected to being called a minimalist composer. He now grudgingly accepts the term - with the distinction that it only applies to his earliest pieces, those up to and including Music in Twelve Parts. It is difficult to see how such a mammoth work as Einstein on the Beach can possibly be called minimalist and Glass now speaks of himself as a composer of music with repetitive structures.
Part I remains some of the most soulful music Glass ever wrote, yet it is also one of his most reductive compositions: at any place in the music, reading vertically in the score, both a C# and an F# are being played somewhere in the instrumentation. Through skillful contrapuntal weaving, Glass creates a drone that is not a drone - an active, abundant, richly fertile stasis.
Part I leads directly into Part II, which introduces a different key, a faster tempo, greater rhythmic and melodic variety and the human voice. "A new sound and a new chord suddenly break in, with an effect as if one wall of a room had suddenly disappeared, to reveal a completely new view."
Part III, one of the few self-contained movements, is a gurgling study in fourths, and one of the shortest. Part IV is extraordinary: after a brief introduction, it becomes a lengthy examination of a single, unsettled chord that sweats, strains and ultimately screams for resolution until the musicians suddenly break into the joyous, rushing catharsis of Part V.
Part VI is another example of how Glass can take what initially seems a standard chord progression and gradually build considerable interest on the part of his audience as he presents it to us, again and again, from different rhythmical perspectives. Part VII clearly derives from Music in Similar Motion, but the development is much more swift than that of the earlier work and it is infinitely more virtuosic (the soprano, in particular, does her best to avoid tongue-twisting and sibilance in the exposed, rapid-fire melismatic passages). And the close of Part VIII prefigures the "Train" scene in Einstein on the Beach, with its irresistible forward motion and sheer, "boy-with-a-gadget" fascination with a systematic augmentation and contraction of the soprano line.
"I had a specific purpose in mind when I set to work on Twelve Parts. I wanted to crystallize in one piece all the ideas of rhythmic structure that I'd been working on since 1965. By the time I got to Part VIII, I'd pretty much finished what I'd started out to do. And so the last movements were different. Parts IX and X were really about ornamentation." Music in Twelve Parts, written by Philip Glass in 1971-1974, is a deliberate, encyclopedic compendium of some techniques of repetition the composer had been evolving since the 60s. It holds an important place in Glass's repertory - not only historically (as the longest and most ambitious concert piece for the Philip Glass Ensemble) but aesthetically as well. Music in Twelve Parts is both a massive theoretical exercise and a deeply engrossing work of art.
In the past, Glass vociferously objected to being called a minimalist composer. He now grudgingly accepts the term - with the distinction that it only applies to his earliest pieces, those up to and including Music in Twelve Parts. It is difficult to see how such a mammoth work as Einstein on the Beach can possibly be called minimalist and Glass now speaks of himself as a composer of music with repetitive structures.
Part I remains some of the most soulful music Glass ever wrote, yet it is also one of his most reductive compositions: at any place in the music, reading vertically in the score, both a C# and an F# are being played somewhere in the instrumentation. Through skillful contrapuntal weaving, Glass creates a drone that is not a drone - an active, abundant, richly fertile stasis.
Part I leads directly into Part II, which introduces a different key, a faster tempo, greater rhythmic and melodic variety and the human voice. "A new sound and a new chord suddenly break in, with an effect as if one wall of a room had suddenly disappeared, to reveal a completely new view."
Part III, one of the few self-contained movements, is a gurgling study in fourths, and one of the shortest. Part IV is extraordinary: after a brief introduction, it becomes a lengthy examination of a single, unsettled chord that sweats, strains and ultimately screams for resolution until the musicians suddenly break into the joyous, rushing catharsis of Part V.
Part VI is another example of how Glass can take what initially seems a standard chord progression and gradually build considerable interest on the part of his audience as he presents it to us, again and again, from different rhythmical perspectives. Part VII clearly derives from Music in Similar Motion, but the development is much more swift than that of the earlier work and it is infinitely more virtuosic (the soprano, in particular, does her best to avoid tongue-twisting and sibilance in the exposed, rapid-fire melismatic passages). And the close of Part VIII prefigures the "Train" scene in Einstein on the Beach, with its irresistible forward motion and sheer, "boy-with-a-gadget" fascination with a systematic augmentation and contraction of the soprano line.
"I had a specific purpose in mind when I set to work on Twelve Parts. I wanted to crystallize in one piece all the ideas of rhythmic structure that I'd been working on since 1965. By the time I got to Part VIII, I'd pretty much finished what I'd started out to do. And so the last movements were different. Parts IX and X were really about ornamentation." Over the last fifteen years, Philip Glass has defined a new form of biographical opera. There was never any doubt that he would be the ideal composer for Mishima, a mosaic film biography. I wanted a score which would unite the film's disparate elements and propel it forward. Such a score, by definition, would be a distinct, cohesive composition.
I only wondered how to induce Glass. Money was out of the question: the film was already an egregiously under-budgeted labor of love production. I opted for a soft sell. (I've subsequently learned how remarkably resistant Philip is to a hard one.) I simply gave him the script and all the materials by and about Mishima at my disposal.
Philip responded enthusiastically and after several pre-production meetings and a trip to the Tokyo locations, wrote a score from the script as he would from a libretto. With Kurt Munkacsi and Michael Riesman he recorded a temp synthesizer version.
I edited the film to this temp score, altering it as necessary: cutting, expanding and repeating cues. I then played the edited film and score for Philip. He rewrote the music to fit the film's now-precise specifications and recorded it with a full orchestra. Later, he supervised last-minute changes during the final mix.
In keeping with the original concept, Glass has re-edited the score as a distinct musical entity. His Mishima equally serves the film and stands alone.

Along with Steve Reich, Philip Glass’ minimalist compositions transformed the world of classical music and, eventually, popular music in general. Glass’ early epiphanies occurred in Paris during his time in the mid-’60s studying under Nadia Boulanger and working with Ravi Shankar. Throughout the ’70s Glass refined his work, resulting in career-defining compositions like Music in 12 Parts and Einstein on the Beach. In the process he became a popular sensation, a serious composer who wasn’t willfully obscure or too difficult to understand. Glass’ stunning soundtrack work for films like The Thin Blue Line and The Hours has only elevated his standing as one of America’s greatest living composers.

This photographer was taking shots of a clients car on a public road in Ramona, California, when suddenly, an extremely angry man came barreling into the shoot yelling that they were "on his driveway" and attempted to run them over. Don't Make These Beginner Photographer Mistakes!
I was on facebook the other day. I see an ad for a photographer that was selling a discount for her services for $40 for an entire session. Of course I was intrigued. I clicked on her profile and the only images that she had up, were some blurry photos and random people standing in the middle of the street next to cars giving the "#1" sign with their figure. It was like those people were trying to endorse the photographer. I felt so bad for her. Her watermark was neon red and covered half the page. Her photos were highly photoshopped. Shadows covered peoples faces in the sun. Her subjects were squinting. The saddest part is that her cover photo said "professional" photographer. It reminded me of when I started out. Honestly, I don't even call myself a professional. A professional... -
YOU CANT THROW THE BALL TWO ME IM THE PHOTOGRAPHER!| playing with crazy poeple.
We went to see the brock lesnar fight but it wasnt good and it wasnt bad. So the fight was average. Anyways we were just playing BEFORE we left and things just got out of hand. So we kust player and poeple were throwing the ball into doors and stuff like that. Anyways see you guys later have an awsome day-josh -

I was on facebook the other day. I see an ad for a photographer that was selling a discount for her services for $40 for an entire session.

Honestly, I don't even call myself a professional. A professional is someone that does it full time. I am a mom full time and I run a small business. A professional is someone that is completely comfortable in EVERY situation. Honestly, I still get surprised!
But I am very careful about using that word. At least I am now. 5 year ago, I thought that buying a camera and the latest version of photoshop that I was set! How little did I know.
Below are the worst images that I could come up with on my facebook feed. They make me want to barf now. But I am going to be brutally honest about my mistakes so that you won't have to make them too!

Joel Meyerowitz ha scoperto la fotografia come destino a New York nell'incontro con Robert Frank. Nelle vie della metropoli, emblema del nuovo mondo costruito dall'uomo, Meyerowitz ha voluto essere un testimone della commedia umana nei gesti degli affetti quotidiani. Da subito, accanto al bianco e nero, in cui speranza e disperazione s'intrecciano, ha utilizzato la forma del colore come rivelazione della forma dei sentimenti. Così, quando nel 1978 decide di passare alla rappresentazione del mondo in grande formato, la commedia dell'uomo si trasforma nello stupore di fronte alla meraviglia del colore, che nell'ora del tempo si rivela come respiro di una vita senza fine: luce che ti chiama per nome. Nello studio di Cézanne, Meyerowitz scopre che le pareti della stanza in cui il pittore dipingeva erano grigie e che solo in quell'assenza della luce il colore si poteva rivelare come forma che genera l'esistenza di ogni cosa nel mondo. Le nature morte di Meyerowitz, realizzate nello studio di Cézanne, rivelano così che le immagini di questo grande fotografo americano si pongono come paesaggi interni e interiori dello spirito umano. Nel Cielo sopra Berlino di Wim Wenders, il sole tra le nubi si trasfigura nell'occhio dell'angelo che ascolta il cuore degli uomini, cercando di volgere al bene i loro pensieri e le loro decisioni, consolando le loro sofferenze e il loro transito attraverso la morte. Immune dal dramma del corpo, per Wim Wenders la visione dell'angelo è in bianco e nero, fino a quando il desiderio di comprendere fino in fondo l'avventura dell'umanità lo spinge ad assumere la finitezza della morte nella carne e nel sangue.
