The Pāli Canon (Pali: Tipitaka) is the standard collection of scriptures in the Theravadan Buddhist tradition, as preserved in the Pāli language. It is the first known and most complete extant early Buddhist canon.
It was composed in North India, and preserved orally until it was committed to writing during the Fourth Buddhist Council in Sri Lanka in 29 BCE, approximately four hundred and fifty four years after the death of Gautama Buddha.
The Pāli Canon falls into three general categories, called pitaka (from Pali piṭaka, meaning "basket", referring to the receptacles in which the palm-leaf manuscripts were kept). Because of this, the canon is traditionally known as the Tipiṭaka (Sanskrit: Tripiṭaka; "three baskets"). The three pitakas are as follows:
The Dhammapada is a collection of sayings of the Buddha in verse form and one of the most widely read and best known Buddhist scriptures. The original version of the Dhammapada is in the Khuddaka Nikaya, a division of the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. The Buddhist scholar and commentator Buddhaghosa explains that each saying recorded in the collection was made on a different occasion in response to a unique situation that had arisen in the life of the Buddha and his monastic community. His commentary, the Dhammapada Atthakatha, presents the details of these events and is a rich source of legend for the life and times of the Buddha.

I taught myself Pali and lived for years in Theravada Countries in Asia. Learning the language is hard work, and this video may motivate you by discussing some of the positive outcomes of learning the language; I had a lot of positive experiences in both monastic and academic settings (and archives, museums, etc.) and most of my writing (on the internet) about learning Pali instead provides pretty "dry" advice (and, sometimes, some grave warnings). So, this is a relatively upbeat video, for people interested in the human reality of what it means to be a Pali scholar in the 21st century --an era when every Pali scholar is an autodidact. As is mentioned in the video, you can find the resources I created to help people learn Pali in various places, including Google Books (for free, of cour...

Pali (Pāli) is a Prakrit language native to the Indian subcontinent. It is widely studied because it is the language of many of the earliest extant literature of Buddhism as collected in the Pāli Canon or Tipiṭaka and is the sacred language of Theravada Buddhism.
Damn.
There's nothing wrong with Buddhism! What is wrong are the false teachings which are presented as Buddhism. 3000 copies of the first part of this video have been made for free distribution by one of our senior Theravada monks in Malaysia, Venerable Dhammavuddo. Much of it is anti-dharma, actually contradicting the Buddha. This video includes five later videos after 38:21 which is the end of the original "What is Wrong with Buddhism" video f...
The Maha Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta The Discourse on the Establishing of Mindfulness) and the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta (The Great Discourse on the Establishing of Mindfulness) are two of the most important and widely studied discourses in the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. The former is also found in the Āgamas of other early schools, and has been embraced by contemporary Mahayana practitioners such as Thich Nhat Hanh. These discourses provide a means for practicing mindfulness in a variety of contexts and potentially continuously. Famously, the Buddha declares at the beginning of this discourse: "This is the direct way [Pāli: ekāyano maggo monks, for the purification of beings, for the overcoming of sorrow and lamentation, for the extinguishing of suffering and grief, for walking on the path of...
මහාසමය සූත්රය:: Maha Samaya Sutta :: So much merits to be shared with the respected monks attached to the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery who are reciting the Pirith ( Parittha) in both Pali and in Sinhalese language respectively :: Below details are translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu:: Translator's Introduction This discourse is an interesting example of the folklore of the Pali canon. It shows that the tendency of Asian popular Buddhism to regard the Buddha as a protective figure, and not just as a teacher, has its roots in the earliest part of the tradition. Metrical analysis indicates that the long "tribute" section of this discourse is very old, while the verses in the introductory section — which is also found in the Samyutta Nikaya — are later in form. This fits with...
Teachings: Main article: Buddhist philosophy Some scholars believe that some portions of the Pali Canon and the Āgamas contain the actual substance of the historical teachings (and possibly even the words) of the Buddha.[51][52] Some scholars believe the Pali Canon and the Agamas pre-date the Mahāyāna sūtras.[53] The scriptural works of Early Buddhism precede the Mahayana works chronologically, and are treated by many Western scholars as the main credible source for information regarding the actual historical teachings of Gautama Buddha. However, some scholars do not think that the texts report on historical events.[54][dubious -- discuss][55][56] Some of the fundamentals of the teachings attributed to Gautama Buddha are: The Four Noble Truths: that suffering is an ingrained part of ...
