Nearly a year since Hamas and Fatah signed a "national reconciliation" agreement, the two are no nearer to bridging their differences or tackling the mounting challenges Palestinians' face.
In recent weeks, a flurry of envoys has beaten a path to Gaza's door: representatives from Qatar, Turkey, the United Nations, the European Union and former U.S. president Jimmy Carter have all visited or tried to visit.
Yet the result has been the same: no success in reconciling Hamas, the Islamist movement that has controlled Gaza since 2007, and Fatah, the more secular, Western-backed party that runs the Palestinian administration from the West Bank.
Fatah is convinced Hamas, which fought a war with Israel in Gaza nine months ago, is trying to carve out an Islamist fiefdom in the 360 square kilometers of the Gaza Strip. Hamas goads Fatah about its unwillingness to hold elections out of fear it will lose and Hamas will end up in full control.
Such deep internal divisions are in part the reason why Israel repeats that it has no Palestinian partner to deal with, making a return to peace negotiations near impossible.

In 1947 when the UN General Assembly voted for the partition of the region between Jews and Palestinian Arabs the land was divided on a relatively equal measure.
But after the 1948 Arab-Israeli War only 22 percent of Palestinian land remained. When Israel was founded in 1948 it divided Palestinians between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, creating separate territories with very little freedom of movement between the two.
In the Six-Day War of 1967, Israel occupied both territories, began building settlements and appeared to implement separate policies on each.
"The aim has always been to create different atmospheres and cultures; here and there," says Dr. Nashat al-Aqtash, a political analyst and academic.
The decades of separation have distanced the Palestinian communities living in the two territories who have developed distinct social and cultural identities.
None of the conflicts or peace talks over the decades, including the Oslo Accords of 1993, has succeeded in changing the map or this divide.
Filmmaker Asraf Mashhrawi examines the political, social and economic history of the split, analysing major events such as the Oslo Accords, the Fatah-Hamas conflict, the Israeli blockade of Gaza and the attacks of recent years - with interviews from Israeli experts like Haaretz journalist Amira Hass and lawyer Sari Bashi.

Arabic/Nat
The leader of the Islamic group Hamas, Sheik Yassin, reacted to Thursday's bomb blasts in Jerusalem.
He said Israel had to end its occupation of Palestinian territories in order to end the cycle of violence that has gripped the region for the past few months.
The explosions went off on Thursday in a quiet ultra-orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Jerusalem.
At least five people were injured, according to police and paramedics, although the injuries were not reported to be serious.
The blasts were probably caused by a car bomb, according to Jerusalem police.
However, police said the car caught fire before exploding, raising the possibility of mechanical trouble as well.
A witness said parts of the car flew up to the height of about four stories.
Crowds of orthodox Jews gathered at the scene shortly after the explosion- some chanting 'Death to Arabs'.
SOUNDBITE: (Arabic)
"This is part of the bloodshed cycle that Israel has imposed upon us by occupying the Palestinian land and killing Palestinians. Israel must end the occupation in order to end the cycle of violence. We cannot say who did it. This region is living a circle of violence. He who will be attacked has the right to respond. They are the ones who took our land. This is a natural response from an oppressed people."
Q: Do you think this bombing is a result of internal differences between Israeli factions, or is it some kind of Palestinian resistance to the occupation?
"We cannot prejudge these things, we have to work until these issues until the facts come out. But what we can say is that this region is living in a circle of violence. This is about a nation that has been victims of aggression by the Israeli nation and government. The government and Nation of Israel have occupied our land and the formed settlements. This is a new type of settlements that eradicated the Palestinian people and installed the Israelis. As a result the Palestinians were forced out and this is a natural response that these oppressed people would be seeking freedom and would like to have sovereignty on their land."

Palestine ( فلسطين Filasṭīn, Falasṭīn, Filisṭīn; Greek: Παλαιστίνη, Palaistinē; Latin: Palaestina; Hebrew: פלשתינה Palestina) is a geographic region in Western Asia between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. It is sometimes considered to include adjoining territories. The name was used by Ancient Greek writers, and was later used for the Roman province Syria Palaestina, the Byzantine Palaestina Prima, and the Umayyad and Abbasid province of Jund Filastin. The region is also known as the Land of Israel (Hebrew: ארץ־ישראל Eretz-Yisra'el), the Holy Land or Promised Land, and historically has been known as the Southern portion of wider regional designations such as Canaan, Syria, as-Sham, and the Levant.
Situated at a strategic location between Egypt, Syria and Arabia, and the birthplace of Judaism and Christianity, the region has a long and tumultuous history as a crossroads for religion, culture, commerce, and politics. The region has been controlled by numerous peoples, including Ancient Egyptians, Canaanites, Israelites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, the Sunni Arab Caliphates, the Shia Fatimid Caliphate, Crusaders, Ayyubids, Mameluks, Mongols, Ottomans, the British, and modern Israelis and Palestinians.
The boundaries of the region have changed throughout history. Today, the region comprises the State of Israel and Palestinian territories in which the State of Palestine was declared.

Palestine
Palestine is the Muslim and Arab half of the Holy Land. After visiting Jerusalem, we harvest olives near Ramallah, follow pilgrims to the place of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, approach Abraham’s tomb — as both Jews and Muslims do — in Hebron, drop in on friends for dinner, and bob in the Dead Sea. We'll also learn about walls, Israeli settlements, and the challenges facing this region. | © 2014 Rick

A crisis in Palestine is again all over the headlines. From stabbings and molotov cocktails, to killing of protesters and anti-Arab lynch mobs--how much of the mass media coverage can we really trust?
Abby Martin takes a look at how the so-called "Israel-Palestine conflict" has been covered by the mainstream press during the last crisis in the region, and the variety of tactics employed by the state of Israel to control the narrative: from it's Hasbara propaganda machine, to outright killing of journalists.

In Palestine, we harvest olives near Hebron, visit a home in Bethlehem, and pop into a university in Ramallah. Over the past few weeks, violent clashes have erupted in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, with youths taking to the streets to protest against an occupation that has lasted almost half a century.
Israel has been swift and brutal in its response - to date, more than 50 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces.
Videos of these attacks, as well as the reprisals, have been broadcast by mainstream media causing some to conclude that the news is fuelling the sense of grievance and then the violence.
Whenever violence flares in this region, there are complaints from both sides over how this story is reported, and the same concerns - the lack of context, the issues around terminology and the way the stories are framed - have come to the fore once again.
Talking us through the media side of this ongoing story is Luke Baker, the bureau chief for the Reuters news agency in Jerusalem; Ben Hartman, a reporter with the Jerusalem Post; Jim Naureckas, an editor at the US-based media watchdog FAIR.org; and Mouin Rabbani, a senior fellow at the Institute for Palestine Studies.
Also: The Listening Post's Marcela Pizarro looks at the issues surrounding binary narratives in the news media.

This panel discussion tries to elucidate what the options for US policy towards Israel / Palestine might be, Speakers William Quandt, Joshua Ruebner and Laila El-Haddad assess the short term and long term implications on Washington’s evolving policy in the region. What will be the impact on the U.S.-Israeli “special relationship”? Are profound changes possible? What kinds of pressures on Israel might be effective? How has the regional context changed, and how does it influence U.S. policy objectives? What are the implications for the Palestinians and the Palestinian leadership? What is the role of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement?

How can international law best influence the realization of a lasting peace agreement? This panel explores these questions from a range of perspectives.

It's always been the region’s worst kept secret: the relationship between Israel & Persian Gulf Arab dictatorships is going from strength to strength. In the latest sneak peek at how strong this partnership really is behind the scenes, the UAE is to allow the setting up an official Israeli presence on its soil for the 1st time ever, disguised as the Israeli presence to a UN energy agency. It has been argued that alignment of regional policies between Israel & Arab states in the Persian Gulf stretches from Syria, Iran, & even occupied Palestine. AR & EN - High Representative of the Union & Vice President of the European Commission Federica Mogherini in Saudi Arabia: press conference by Federica Mogherini and Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, Saudi Arabian Minister for Foreign Affairs - 27.07.2015 - Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
Federica Mogherini (05:17-13:20):
-"bilateral relations: visa issues, security and counter-terrorism cooperation, energy and trade, economic opportunities people-to-people contacts, students, structuring even more our cooperation on bilateral level or through the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council)-EU relation (human rights separate working groups in the GCC)"
-"common vision on the Middle-East peace process": "we believe in the EU that Saudi Arabia has a key role to play, to revive the Arab peace initiative (...), to restart the process that at the moment is not in place (...° and we have discussed of ways of cooperating together with other friends and partners in the region and in the international scene, starting with the United States, but also the UN, Russia, other key Arab countries to recreate the conditions for a Middle-East peace process, to bring concrete results on the ground, and the creation of a Palestinian State on one side, and the right of Israel to live in security",
-"common approach on the need to put an end to the too long lasting war in Syria with enormous dramatic humanitarian consequences, and also security consequences for the entire region, and when I say region, I say the Gulf region, but also the European region, because we share one part of the world that today is the most dangerous one in the world",
-"as the Minister very rightly said, time to support the Iraqi reform agenda, in a very concrete and operational way, to make sure that the Sunni community, not only in Iraq, but also actually in all the Arab countries, is empowered so that it can lead the fight against Daesh with a leading role and with full power"
-"Yemen, with a dramatic humanitarian situation and the need to find a political solution there"
-"and the situation in Libya, where hopefully the first partial agreement that was reached a few days ago in Morocco could be opened up to support also from the one party out of the 4 that didn't support it so far, so that Libya can start a new path",
-"we have dedicated also a significant part of our talks to the deal that we have reached with Iran in Vienna on July 14th, that I have facilitated on behalf of the international community ; that was a mandate originated by a Security Council resolution, long negotiations, 12 years, at the end, 22 months, and many months, and weeks and nights and days of hard work, and if that took so much time and so much hard work, that was exactly because we were all very much aware of the fact that we needed to have a strong, solid agreement, leaving nothing to further interpretation or discussion, but very detailed, and ready for implementation.
As you know, tomorrow I will be also visiting Tehran, exactly to start work on the implementation of the agreement, as I will be, in my capacity of High Representative of the EU, coordinating the work of the joint commission that will supervise the implementation of the agreement. (...)
We are very much aware of the concerns, of the worries of the countries of the region, also of Europe, we are quite close to the region as well, so we understand the concerns very well, and it is important for us to make sure that the agreement is not only a solid and robust one, as it was and as it is, but it is implemented in full, and we will do all that we can to make sure that it happens (...)
My message to Tehran, we've discussed this with the minister at length, will also be tomorrow that of taking the opportunity to shape a different regional framework, passing from confrontation to cooperation could lead the way to solving or starting to solve many of the regional crises we are facing in this part of the world (...)"
Question from journalist (EN part) (13:52-14:50): "Miss Federica, Iran was accused by the United Nations and US since 2014 that are supporting terrorism, especially with the activity of Iranian Revolutionary Guards and their proxies in the Middle-East. How can we understand the European Commission in its position about their dealing with Iran in this situation, while they are accused with terrorism and supporting the deal with nuclear weapons?"
Answer by Federica Mogherini (14:50) (...)
