Three Islamic militants were shot dead by the Indian army on Sunday after the day long siege of a mosque in central Kashmir.
Hiding in a mosque, the suspected militants fired at an Indian army cordon and killed one soldier - but were killed themselves when they tried to escape.
And in a previous encounter on Saturday, the Indian army claims to have killed five top foreign mercenaries suspected of having been involved in the massacre of 40 Sikhs in the village of Chatti Singhpura early last week.
The three militants took shelter inside the mosque in Handwara in central Kashmir late Saturday after they were spotted by soldiers on patrol near the town.
Handwara is 80 kilometers (48 miles) north of Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital.
Soldiers threw a cordon around the mosque and kept watch through the night, but did not fire back even though the militants lobbed grenades at them and fired with sub machine guns.
One soldier was killed in the firing late on Saturday and an officer was wounded.
Early on Sunday the intensity of the firing increased and an explosion was heard inside the mosque.
Two militants were seen jumping out of a window and they were killed in small arms fire.
And within hours the third militant was also killed after he also tried to escape.
At one point television journalists and photographers covering the encounter had to run for their lives as the suspected militants started firing in their direction.
Officials said they exercised careful restraint during the siege.
They said any harm to the mosque caused by the army firing in on the militants could have flared up tensions in Kashmir - which is India's only Muslim-majority state - India is predominantly Hindu.

"They opened up fire from a number of directions from inside the masjid, killing one of our jawans (soldiers) in the process. In spite of one of our jawans having been killed, we have shown tremendous restraint in not retaliating back - the way we are equipped with, we have only fired a small rounds ammunition which is basically the AK ammunition, purely in self defence."

Army officers took the help of local Islamic preachers and other senior citizens, who urged the militants to come out of the mosque and surrender.
But the rebels ignored the requests and so were eventually killed.
In a previous encounter on Saturday, the Indian army claimed to have killed five top foreign mercenaries.
They were suspected of being involved in the massacre of 40 Sikhs in the village of Chatti Singhpura earlier last week.
The Indian security forces cordoned off the house where the suspected militants were hiding and launched the operation to flush them out.
The fierce gun battle took place in Patheribal in Anantnag district.
Later the villagers held a funeral procession for one of those killed in the encounter and who they said was a local resident.
As they walked thorough the streets they shouted pro-independence slogans.
Dozens of Muslim militant groups have been fighting to either separate Kashmir from India or merge it with neighbouring Pakistan.
India accuses Pakistan of arming and funding the insurgents and U-S President Bill Clinton also says guerrillas are being aided by certain members of the Pakistani government.
Islamabad denies the charge.
As a result more than 25 thousand people have died in Kashmir since the fighting began in 1989.

STORYLINE:
Six suspected Islamic militants and a paramilitary trooper were killed during gun battles as India and Pakistan exchanged small arms fire across the ceasefire line in troubled Kashmir on Tuesday.
Paramilitary forces killed three suspected rebels who were hiding in an old house in Ahmadnagar, outside Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu-Kashmir state.
Border Security Force officials said the three belonged to the Al-Badr group, a Kashmiri militant outfit.
They included Saifullah, a deputy commander of the militant group.
Police officers at the scene said the house of a local businessman was surrounded on Monday night but the gunfire did not begin until Tuesday, when authorities demanded that the militants surrender.
The Border Security Force tried to persuade the militants, through locals, that they should surrender but they did not.
When some troopers tried to enter the house through a large courtyard early on Tuesday, the militants opened fire.
The BSF sent several raiding parties to rescue the residents of the house and all were safe.
Later the house was burnt down and all the militants were killed.
One paramilitary soldier was also killed and another four were seriously wounded in the shootout.
The wounded were hospitalised in Srinagar.
Another three suspected guerrillas were killed during hour-long gun battle with a joint team of Indian army and police in the mountainous Rajouri sector, 185 kilometres (115 miles) northwest of Jammu.
The militants have been fighting for Kashmir's independence since 1989 and launch attacks against Indian security forces.
India accuses Pakistan of funding and training the militants, allegations that Islamabad denies.

In Syria, in Hama province, the militants of the terrorist group "dzhebhat EN-Nusra front" (Jabhat al-Nusra) attempted to shoot a propaganda film about their success in the confrontation with government forces. Islamic State militants captured nine oil workers from the al-Ghani oil field in Libya last Friday, according to Libyan military spokesman Ahmed al-Mesmari.
The militants also beheaded eight oil field guards, according al-Mesmari. The Tehran-based Press TV reported the militants shot the guards and then set parts of the oil field on fire.
IS militants took nine foreign workers hostage, including four workers from the Philippines, one from Austria, one from the Czech Republic and one from Bangladesh. The ninth hostage’s nationality has yet to be identified.
The al-Ghani oil field is located near the town of Zalla, about 470 miles southeast of Tripoli, Libya’s capital.
The Associated Press reported that al-Mesmari warned IS militants plan to take over Libya’s petroleum industry.
"This is the lifeline of the Libyan people," al-Mesmari said Monday.
One oil worker reportedly died of a heart attack after watching the beheadings.

During a fierce gunbattle that lasted more than ten hours, the Indian army shot dead six Islamic militants in the insurgency-wracked Kashmir valley on Wednesday.
The gunbattle took place during a search operation near Kokarnag town in Anantnag district, 75 kilometers (45 miles) south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
The militants were hiding in the dense pinewood forests adjoining Kokarnag.
The army spokesperson said four of the six militants had been identified.
Two of them belonged to pro-Pakistan Hezb-ul-Mujahedeen while the other two were members of Pakistan-based Laskar-e-Tayyaba.
The army seized AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, ammunition and explosives from those killed in the clashes.
More than a dozen militant groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence from India since 1989.
Human rights groups say more than 60-thousand people have been killed in the fighting.
The Islamic guerilla groups have stepped up attacks after the unsuccessful summit between India and Pakistan in July.
In another incident, three school children died and another four injured in an explosion in Baramullah, 60 kilometers (38 miles) north of Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital.
Police said the explosion occurred in the premises of the school where the children were playing during lunch break.
The militants also blew up a passenger bus in Srinagar on Monday that killed one and injured 12 people.
The Indian army has stepped up its anti-insurgency operations.
In a successful operation, a group of militants surrendered their arms to the Indian security forces in Manasbal.
Three of them were captured by the army during search operation.
India accuses Pakistan of training, arming and funding the guerrillas.
Islamabad says it supports the guerrillas' cause, but gives no material aid.
Both nations have fought two of their three wars over control of Kashmir since gaining independence from Britain in 1947.
India controls two-thirds of the Himalayan territory and Pakistan the rest.

Islamic State militants have released a video purporting to show the beheading of a US journalist.
The individual was named by an IS member as James Foley who went missing in Syria nearly two years ago.
Foley's military brother was mentioned in a denouncement of the West.
The man carrying out the execution apparently spoke with a British accent.

Islamic terrorism
Islamic terrorism is, by definition, terrorist acts committed by Muslim groups or individuals who profess Islamic or Islamist motivations or goals. Islamic terrorists have relied on particular interpretations of the tenets of the Quran and the Hadith, citing these scriptures to justify violent tactics including mass murder,genocide,child molestation and slavery. In recent decades, incidents of Islamic terrorism have occurred on a global scale, occurring not only in Muslim-majority states in Africa and Asia, but also abroad in Europe, Russia, and the United States, and such attacks have targeted Muslims and non-Muslims. In a number of the worst-affected Muslim-majority regions, these terrorists have been met by armed, independent resistance groups, state actors and their proxies, and politically liberal Muslim protesters.
Although the literal existence of Islamic terrorism is not disputed, some have criticized what they perceive to be the blanket usage of the term. Such use in Western political speech has variously been called "counter-productive," "unhelpful," "highly politicized, intellectually contestable" and "damaging to community relations." This view, in turn, has been criticized by those who perceive it to be an act of evasion.

The militants also beheaded eight oil field guards, according al-Mesmari. The Tehran-based Press TV reported the militants shot the guards and then set parts of the oil field on fire. IS militants took nine foreign workers hostage, including four workers from the Philippines, one from Austria, one from the Czech Republic and one from Bangladesh. The ninth hostage’s nationality has yet to be identified. The al-Ghani oil field is located near the town of Zalla, about 470 miles southeast of Tripoli, Libya’s capital. The Associated Press reported that al-Mesmari warned IS militants plan to take over Libya’s petroleum industry. "This is the lifeline of the Libyan people," al-Mesmari said Monday. The gunbattle took place during a search operation near Kokarnag town in Anantnag district, 75 kilometers (45 miles) south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The militants were hiding in the dense pinewood forests adjoining Kokarnag. The army spokesperson said four of the six militants had been identified. Two of them belonged to pro-Pakistan Hezb-ul-Mujahedeen while the other two were members of Pakistan-based Laskar-e-Tayyaba. And in a previous encounter on Saturday, the Indian army claims to have killed five top foreign mercenaries suspected of having been involved in the massacre of 40 Sikhs in the village of Chatti Singhpura early last week.
The three militants took shelter inside the mosque in Handwara in central Kashmir late Saturday after they were spotted by soldiers on patrol near the town.
Handwara is 80 kilometers (48 miles) north of Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital.
Soldiers threw a cordon around the mosque and kept watch through the night, but did not fire back even though the militants lobbed grenades at them and fired with sub machine guns.
One soldier was killed in the firing late on Saturday and an officer was wounded.
Early on Sunday the intensity of the firing increased and an explosion was heard inside the mosque.
Two militants were seen jumping out of a window and they were killed in small arms fire.
And within hours the third militant was also killed after he also tried to escape.
At one point television journalists and photographers covering the encounter had to run for their lives as the suspected militants started firing in their direction.
Officials said they exercised careful restraint during the siege.
They said any harm to the mosque caused by the army firing in on the militants could have flared up tensions in Kashmir - which is India's only Muslim-majority state - India is predominantly Hindu.

"They opened up fire from a number of directions from inside the masjid, killing one of our jawans (soldiers) in the process. In spite of one of our jawans having been killed, we have shown tremendous restraint in not retaliating back - the way we are equipped with, we have only fired a small rounds ammunition which is basically the AK ammunition, purely in self defence."

Army officers took the help of local Islamic preachers and other senior citizens, who urged the militants to come out of the mosque and surrender.
But the rebels ignored the requests and so were eventually killed.
In a previous encounter on Saturday, the Indian army claimed to have killed five top foreign mercenaries.
They were suspected of being involved in the massacre of 40 Sikhs in the village of Chatti Singhpura earlier last week.
The Indian security forces cordoned off the house where the suspected militants were hiding and launched the operation to flush them out.

Later the villagers held a funeral procession for one of those killed in the encounter and who they said was a local resident.
As they walked thorough the streets they shouted pro-independence slogans.

India accuses Pakistan of arming and funding the insurgents and U-S President Bill Clinton also says guerrillas are being aided by certain members of the Pakistani government.

STORYLINE:
Six suspected Islamic militants and a paramilitary trooper were killed during gun battles as India and Pakistan exchanged small arms fire across the ceasefire line in troubled Kashmir on Tuesday.
Paramilitary forces killed three suspected rebels who were hiding in an old house in Ahmadnagar, outside Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu-Kashmir state.
Border Security Force officials said the three belonged to the Al-Badr group, a Kashmiri militant outfit.
They included Saifullah, a deputy commander of the militant group.
Police officers at the scene said the house of a local businessman was surrounded on Monday night but the gunfire did not begin until Tuesday, when authorities demanded that the militants surrender.
The Border Security Force tried to persuade the militants, through locals, that they should surrender but they did not.
When some troopers tried to enter the house through a large courtyard early on Tuesday, the militants opened fire.
The BSF sent several raiding parties to rescue the residents of the house and all were safe.
Later the house was burnt down and all the militants were killed.
One paramilitary soldier was also killed and another four were seriously wounded in the shootout.
The wounded were hospitalised in Srinagar.
Another three suspected guerrillas were killed during hour-long gun battle with a joint team of Indian army and police in the mountainous Rajouri sector, 185 kilometres (115 miles) northwest of Jammu.
The militants have been fighting for Kashmir's independence since 1989 and launch attacks against Indian security forces.
India accuses Pakistan of funding and training the militants, allegations that Islamabad denies.

Islamic State militants captured nine oil workers from the al-Ghani oil field in Libya last Friday, according to Libyan military spokesman Ahmed al-Mesmari.
The militants also beheaded eight oil field guards, according al-Mesmari. The Tehran-based Press TV reported the militants shot the guards and then set parts of the oil field on fire.
IS militants took nine foreign workers hostage, including four workers from the Philippines, one from Austria, one from the Czech Republic and one from Bangladesh. The ninth hostage’s nationality has yet to be identified.
The al-Ghani oil field is located near the town of Zalla, about 470 miles southeast of Tripoli, Libya’s capital.
The Associated Press reported that al-Mesmari warned IS militants plan to take over Libya’s petroleum industry.
"This is the lifeline of the Libyan people," al-Mesmari said Monday.
One oil worker reportedly died of a heart attack after watching the beheadings.

During a fierce gunbattle that lasted more than ten hours, the Indian army shot dead six Islamic militants in the insurgency-wracked Kashmir valley on Wednesday.
The gunbattle took place during a search operation near Kokarnag town in Anantnag district, 75 kilometers (45 miles) south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.
The militants were hiding in the dense pinewood forests adjoining Kokarnag.
The army spokesperson said four of the six militants had been identified.
Two of them belonged to pro-Pakistan Hezb-ul-Mujahedeen while the other two were members of Pakistan-based Laskar-e-Tayyaba.
The army seized AK-47 rifles, hand grenades, ammunition and explosives from those killed in the clashes.
More than a dozen militant groups have been fighting for Kashmir's independence from India since 1989.
Human rights groups say more than 60-thousand people have been killed in the fighting.
The Islamic guerilla groups have stepped up attacks after the unsuccessful summit between India and Pakistan in July.
In another incident, three school children died and another four injured in an explosion in Baramullah, 60 kilometers (38 miles) north of Srinagar, Kashmir's summer capital.
Police said the explosion occurred in the premises of the school where the children were playing during lunch break.
The militants also blew up a passenger bus in Srinagar on Monday that killed one and injured 12 people.
The Indian army has stepped up its anti-insurgency operations.
In a successful operation, a group of militants surrendered their arms to the Indian security forces in Manasbal.
Three of them were captured by the army during search operation.
India accuses Pakistan of training, arming and funding the guerrillas.
Islamabad says it supports the guerrillas' cause, but gives no material aid.
Both nations have fought two of their three wars over control of Kashmir since gaining independence from Britain in 1947.

The individual was named by an IS member as James Foley who went missing in Syria nearly two years ago.
Foley's military brother was mentioned in a denouncement of the West.
The man carrying out the execution apparently spoke with a British accent.
The militants said they were taking revenge for recent US air strikes against the Islamic State group in Iraq.

Damascus has a recording of conversations between the American military and Islamic State terrorists ahead of the US-led coalition airstrike that hit Syrian troops near Deir ez-Zor on September 17, the speaker of the People's Council of Syria said.
“The Syrian Army intercepted the communications between the Americans and Daesh [Arabic pejorative for Islamic State/IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL] ahead of the attack on Deir ez-Zor," Hadiya Khalaf Abbas said, as cited by the Al Mayadeen channel.According to the People's Council speaker, the Syrian authorities have evidence that the US-led coalition’s airstrike was a deliberate act.
Abbas promised that details of the recording will be released by Damascus.
Syrian troops encircled by Islamic State militants near the town of Deir ez-Zor were bombed by US-led coalition warplanes on September 17.
Sixty-two soldiers were killed and over 100 injured in the airstrike, which was immediately followed by an offensive by jihadists on the positions of government forces.
The bombing was stopped only after the Russian military contacted the US side several times, saying that they were attacking the wrong targets.
Washington acknowledged the fact of the airstrike against the Syrian troops and even apologized for the mistake.
The incident dealt a serious blow to the Syrian ceasefire deal, which Moscow and Washington agreed earlier in September.
During his speech at the UN General Assembly during the weekend, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem also said that the bombing of Syrian troops by the US-led coalition was a deliberate attack, not a mistake as Washington claims."The Syrian government puts all the responsibility for the aggression on the US, as the facts show that it was a deliberate attack, but not a mistake – even if America says the opposite,” Muallem said, adding that the bombing “proves that the US and its allies are accomplices of Islamic State and other terror groups.”

A heavily bearded and gaunt Kjartan Sekkingstad, who was released on Saturday by the feared Abu Sayyaf group, also said he narrowly survived military attacks against his captors, with a bullet piercing his backpack.
"Basically, I've been treated like a slave, carrying their stuff around, time to time abused," a frail-looking Sekkingstad said as he was received by a government envoy in the town of Indanan on the forested island of Jolo.
Also released were three Indonesians held by the group, who were also turned over to envoy Jesus Dureza.
Sekkingstad told reporters he endured "psychological pressure", with the Abu Sayyaf threatening several times to behead him.
Sekkingstad, then aged 56, was abducted in September 2015 from the high-end Philippine tourist resort which he managed and was taken to Jolo by the Abu Sayyaf.
Two Canadian resort guests captured with him, John Ridsdel and Robert Hall, were later beheaded by the group after a ransom demand of about 300 million pesos ($6.5 million) was not met.
Sekkingstad said that during the separate killings in April and June, the two handcuffed Canadians were escorted out of sight, "but still close enough that you could hear their cries when it happened."
"It was devastating," the visibly shaken Norwegian said.
Sekkingstad said he also survived numerous military attacks on his captors and even saved as a souvenir a bullet that went through his backpack.
The Abu Sayyaf handed the Norwegian over to another Muslim rebel leader Nur Misuari, whose group assisted in the release and at whose camp he spent the night, according to the government.
- Ransom mystery -
Escorted by a small contingent of Jolo police on Sunday, Misuari handed him and the Indonesians over to Dureza at a meeting guarded by hundreds of Misuari's fighters from the Moro National Liberation Front.
Sekkingstad and Dureza then flew to the southern city of Davao to meet Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. The three Indonesians were taken to the nearby city of Zamboanga where a retired Indonesian general was waiting to pick them up.
The Indonesians were kidnapped off Lahad Datu, Sabah, Malaysia in July, a regional military spokesman said.
At a press forum with Duterte later, a now-clean shaven Sekkingstad thanked the president and all those who helped obtain his freedom.
It was unclear if any ransom was paid and, if so, by whom.
A spokesman for the Abu Sayyaf was quoted in a local newspaper on Sunday as saying the group received 30 million pesos (about $625,000) for the Norwegian.
Norwegian foreign affairs communications chief Frode Andersen told AFP by phone that "the Norwegian government does not pay ransom in this case or any other case".
And Duterte's spokesman Martin Andanar also said in Manila that "the (Philippine) government maintains the no-ransom policy".
"Now, if there is a third party like family that paid, we do not know anything about that," he told reporters.
The Abu Sayyaf was formed in the 1990s with seed money from Osama bin Laden's Al-Qaeda network.
Based in remote Muslim-populated southern islands of the mainly Catholic Philippines, its kidnappings for ransom -- often of foreigners -- have earned it millions.
While its leaders have in recent years pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group, analysts say the Abu Sayyaf is mainly focused on crime rather than religious ideology.
The group is blamed for the worst terror attacks in Philippine history and is listed by the United States as a terrorist organisation.

Today, we find ourselves confronted by a new enemy, also engaged in a violent struggle to transform our world. As we sleep in the comfort of our homes, a new evil rises against us. A new menace is threatening, with all the means at its disposal, to bow Western Civilization under the yoke of its values. That enemy is Radical Islam.
Using images from Arab TV, rarely seen in the West, Obsession reveals an insider's view' of the hatred the Radicals are teaching, their incitement of global jihad, and their goal of world domination. With the help of experts, including first-hand accounts from a former PLO terrorist, a Nazi youth commander, and the daughter of a martyred guerilla leader, the film shows, clearly, that the threat of Radical Islam is real.

Obsession - Radical Islam's War Against the West is a new documentary film that will challenge the way you look at the world.
Almost 70 years ago, Europe found itself at war with one of the most sinister figures in modern history: Adolf Hitler. When the last bullet of World War II was fired, over 50 million people were dead, and countless countries were both physically and economically devastated. Hitlers bloody struggle sought to forge the world anew, in the crucible of Nazi values. How could such a disaster occur? How could the West have overlooked the evil staring it in the face, for so long, before standing forcefully against it?
Today, we find ourselves confronted by a new enemy, also engaged in a violent struggle to transform our world. As we sleep in the comfort of our homes, a new evil rises against us. A new menace is threatening, with all the means at its disposal, to bow Western Civilization under the yoke of its values. That enemy is Radical Islam.
Using images from Arab TV, rarely seen in the West, Obsession reveals an insider's view' of the hatred the Radicals are teaching, their incitement of global jihad, and their goal of world domination. With the help of experts, including first-hand accounts from a former PLO terrorist, a Nazi youth commander, and the daughter of a martyred guerilla leader, the film shows, clearly, that the threat of Radical Islam is real.
Islam is being hijacked by radical extremists, who actively seek to destroy the shared values we stand for. The world should be very concerned.
This is a documentary film about Radical Islamic terror. A dangerous ideology, fuelled by religious hatred. It's important to remember, most Muslims are peaceful and do not support terror. This is not a film about them.
