Why you shouldn't focus only on learning Classical Arabic
Do you want to become fluent in
Arabic and speak in a manner in which the locals do? Then Nassra Arabic lessons are designed in a way that can help you become proficient with proper practice, materials and time. Now the question is which version of Arabic should you opt for? Is it the
Modern Standard Arabic or
Classical Arabic?
If you are learning Arabic for the purpose of understanding the religion of
Islam and history of
Arab then classical Arabic is the right way to go. However, you must be aware of the fact that if your purpose of learning Arabic is to converse and speak efficiently in Arabic then you must learn the modern version. This is because when it comes to classical Arabic even native
Arabic speakers are regularly confounded by the rules of regional grammar and dialects. It is because of this that when it comes to speaking and interacting with local
Arabs in the
Middle East or native Arabic speakers, then classical
Arabic dialect can prove to be very difficult for the natives to understand.
Therefore, one of the challenges faced by most foreign students is that they don’t understand the proper
difference between modern version of Arabic and classical Arabic due to which they struggle to interact with native Arabic speakers. So although learning classical Arabic is good however, it shouldn’t be your prime focus especially if you want to interact with the Arabs around the globe.
In this video, by way of a story
Khaled explains why classical Arabic is not the best version to learn for communication purposes. One of Khaled’s students was learning classical Arabic as it was the only version taught in most foreign universities.
The student whose name was John was travelling to Jordon in order to put his learning in to practice and to interact with the native Arabic speakers. However, when he landed in
Jordan and interacted with the taxi driver in classical Arabic then the driver was unable to understand what he was saying
. In the same way John was also unable to understand the taxi driver’s dialect which made the communication process frustrating for both of them.
This shows that the reason why John was actually trying to familiarise with the language that was to interact with the native Arabs was in vain.
The abovementioned example shows that if your aim of learning Arabic is to carryout conversation with native Arabs with ease and clarity then classical Arabic will not prove to be useful. It would also not benefit you in the day to day communication and scenarios such as ordering food in a restaurant or exchanging pleasantries.
Therefore, if you want to learn Arabic to interact and engage with the people living in the Middle East, carryout business transactions with Arab clients and to gain their trust then you must learn the spoken Arabic.
