Digital Millennium Copyright Act has been hurting America
Since
1998, the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act has attempted to protect software makers, artists, and those that create copyrighted work from having their works illegally copied and reproduced. But in reality, the bill had some very sinister consequences that
Congress did not intend when it signed the bill.
First, the law has been used to slap consumers on the wrist for using technology in ways that manufacturers just don't like, such as jailbreaking phones or making copies of a CD or game that someone purchased legally. In addition, the law has allowed a lot of companies to shut down websites simply for using part of their copyrighted work in ways that the company doesn't like. But after years of public outcry to reform the bill, Congress is looking to change these harmful provisions.
