The Longest Tunnel in The World
The Gotthard Base Tunnel (GBT) is a railway tunnel in the heart of the Swiss Alps expected to open in 2016. With a route length of 57 km (35.4 mi) and a total of 151.84 km (94.3 mi) of tunnels, shafts and passages, it is the world's longest rail tunnel, surpassing the Seikan Tunnel in Japan.
Its main purpose is to increase total transport capacity across the Alps, especially for freight, notably between Germany and Italy, and more particularly to shift freight volumes from road to rail to reduce environmental damage caused by ever-increasing numbers of heavy lorries. A secondary benefit will be to cut the journey time for passenger trains fr

Its main purpose is to increase total transport capacity across the Alps, especially for freight, notably between Germany and Italy, and more particularly to shift freight volumes from road to rail to reduce environmental damage caused by ever-increasing numbers of heavy lorries. A secondary benefit will be to cut the journey time for passenger trains from Zürich to Milan by about an hour and from Zürich to Lugano to 1-hour 40 minutes.
The project consists of two single-track tunnels. It is part of the AlpTransit project, also known as the New Railway Link through the Alps (NRLA), which includes the Lötschberg Base Tunnel between the cantons of Bern and Valais and the under construction Ceneri Base Tunnel (scheduled to open late 2019) to the south. It bypasses the Gotthardbahn, a winding mountain route opened in 1882 across the Saint-Gotthard Massif, which is now operating at capacity, and establishes a direct route usable by high-speed rail and heavy freight trains.
The total cost of the project is 9.8 billion Swiss francs, or US$10.3 billion. When completed, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will be one of the longest tunnel construction projects in the world: 20 years of constant construction and preparation.

After 64 percent of Swiss voters accepted the AlpTransit project in a 1992 referendum, tunnel construction began in 1996.Drilling operations in the eastern tunnel were completed on 15 October 2010 in a breakthrough ceremony broadcast live on Swiss TV, and in the western tunnel on 23 March 2011. AlpTransit Gotthard Ltd. was planned to hand over the tunnel to Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) in operating condition in December 2016; this date was modified to 5 June 2016 on 4 February 2014 with the commencement of an 850-day opening countdown calendar on the AlpTransit homepage. Total cost of the project is 9.8 billion Swiss francs, or US$10.3 billion.
The two portals are near the villages of Erstfeld, Uri, and Bodio, Ticino. Nearby are two other St. Gotthard Tunnels: the 1881 Gotthard Rail Tunnel and the 1980 Gotthard Road Tunnel.
On October 31, 2014, the railway track installation was completed. A gold sleeper, marking the very last part of the track has been installed during the celebration.
When completed, the Gotthard Base Tunnel will have been one of the longest tunnel construction projects in the world: 20 years of constant construction and preparation.

Switzerland has nearly finished an incredible feat of engineering: the world’s longest railway tunnel. So to get a better sense of that accomplishment, these are the top ten world’s longest MegaTunnels.
10. Iwate-Ichinohe (Japan) Length: 16.0 mi (25.8 km)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iwate-Ichinohe_Tunnel
When Japan’s Iwate-Ichinohe opened in 2002 it claimed the title of world’s longest land-based railway tunnel. Part of the Tohoku Shinkansen high speed rail line, it passes through hilly terrain near the Kitakami and Ou mountains.
9. Hakkoda (Japan) Length: 16.4 mi (26.5 km)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hakk%C5%8Dda_Tunnel
The ninth longest railway tunnel is also on Japan’s high speed rail line. Shooting through the Hakkoda mountain range, the Hakkoda tunnel is the world’s longest operating double-tracked land-based tunnel, and for two months held the overall title of world’s longest terrestrial tunnel until it was surpassed by the fifth ranked tunnel on this list.
8. Taihang (China) Length: 17.3 mi (27.9 km)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taihang_Tunnel
Part of China’s mind-boggling 20,000 kilometers of operating high speed rail lines, the Taihang tunnel connects the capital of Hebei province with the capital of Shanxi province through the Taihang mountains, cutting travel time between the two cities from almost six hours to just one.
7. Guadarrama (Spain) Length: 17.6 mi (28.4 km)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guadarrama_Tunnel
The Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range in the Iberian peninsula is home to Spain’s longest railway tunnel, the double-tube Guadarrama. Which carries high speed rail passengers on their way to Madrid through 28 miles of darkness. over 28 miles through the dark.
6. Guanjiao (China) Length: 20.3 mi (32.6 km)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Guanjiao_Tunnel
China’s longest railway tunnel -- and the sixth longest on this list -- is the Guanjiao which opened last December after seven long years of high altitude construction at more than 10,000 feet above sea level, because this line impressively traverses the Tibetan Plateau.
5. Koralm (Austria) Length: 20.4 mi (32.9 km)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koralm_Tunnel
Although it won’t be operational until 2022, Austria’s Koralm MEGA-Tunnel demands mentioning on this list. It’s two parallel tunnels will at times run at depths of more than 4,000 feet below ground. That’s a whole lotta mountain!
4. Lötschberg Base Tunnel (Switzerland) Length: 21.5 mi (34.6 km)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%B6tschberg_Tunnel
And the current titleholder for world’s longest land tunnel is the LBT, passing through the Alps of Switzerland. About 110 trains use the Lötschberg every day, 80 of them freight. The LBT actually sits some 400 meters below the original Lötschberg Tunnel, which is over a century old, but still fully operational.
3. Eurotunnel (France-UK) Length: 31.4 mi (50.5 km)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_Tunnel
The top three tunnels are in a class of their own, starting with the Chunnel which connects the United Kingdom with the European mainland in France under the English Channel. The Channel Tunnel carries both Eurostar passenger trains and the Eurotunnel Shuttle for road vehicles and has the longest undersea section of any tunnel in the world.
2. Seikan (Japan) Length: 33.5 mi (53.9 km)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seikan_Tunnel
Completed in 1988, the world’s second-longest tunnel is the Seikan tunnel, which connects the main Japanese island of Honshu with the northern island of Hokkaido beneath the Tsugaru Strait. The track level is about 100 meters below the seafloor.
1. Gotthard (Switzerland) Length: 35.5 mi (57.1 km)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotthard_Base_Tunnel
And the longest tunnel in the world, set to be fully operational in 2016, is Switzerland’s Gotthard Base Tunnel. It’s main purpose is to increase total transport capacity across the Alps, especially for freight, and to shift freight volumes from road to rail to reduce fatal accidents and environmental damage caused by ever-increasing numbers of heavy trucks.

Police: Fire on Truck Triggered Alarm in Channel Tunnel
Police said a fire in a truck that was being transported through the Channel Tunnel triggered an alarm which led to suspension of all passenger and freight rail services between Britain and France on Saturday. Railway operator Eurostar suspended all services for Saturday and promised more information later in the day. Tunnel operator Eurotunnel said in a statement that a C02 alarm went off just before midday and that it was investigating the cause.

EU probes fraud claim over Lyon-Turin rail project
The EU's anti-fraud office, Olaf, has opened an investigation into the Lyon-Turin high-speed rail project, after Green MEPs alleged serious misspending.
Olaf said it would seek to "clarify whether any fraud or irregularity has occurred that can prejudice the EU's financial interests".
In 2012 the French Court of Auditors estimated that the project's total cost would rise to €26bn (£19bn; $29bn).
Green MEPs complained to Olaf, calling the project a waste of public money.
In 2013 construction work began on a 57km (35 mile) tunnel through the Alps for the Lyon-Turin line. The project - known

Material Science - The World's Strongest Technological Materials (Ultimate tensile strength)
Ultimate tensile strength (UTS), often shortened to tensile strength (TS) or ultimate strength, is the maximum stress that a material can withstand while being stretched or pulled before failing or breaking. Tensile strength is not the same as compressive strength and the values can be quite different.
Some materials will break sharply, without plastic deformation, in what is called a brittle failure. Others, which are more ductile, including most metals, will experience some plastic deformation and possibly necking before fracture.
The UTS is usually found by performing a tensile test and recording the engineering stress versus strain. The

Here are 10 of the longest running construction projects.
Some large building projects are especially prone to delays and those can be caused by any number of circumstances. Others are just destined to drag on from the start.
Here are 10 of the longest running construction endeavors out there.
Number 10. La Sagrada Familia. Begun in 1882, the Barcelona cathedral has encountered a number of setbacks. After a falling out with the original architect, it was handed over to Antoni Gaudí and would become his masterpiece. Gaudí’s untimely death and a fire that destroyed all of his plans, drawings and sketches also slowed the process. Numerous architects have signed on to finish the job, and it’s believed the building will be complete in 2026.
Number 9. New York City Water Tunnel Number 3. If finished in 2021 as planned, the system upgrade will have been 51 years in the making. Once completed it will deliver over a billion gallons of water a day to about 9 million New York City residents.
Number 8. 2nd Avenue Subway. Officials of the Big Apple have been working on this rail line since the late 1920s. Estimates back then had it opening sometime between 1938 and 1941 and at a cost of 86 million dollars. Recent predictions see completion possibly occurring as early as 2018. The price of making it happen has gone up to 5.7 billion.
Number 7. South-North Water Diversion. The goal is to supply China’s arid northern areas with water drawn from the country’s southern reaches. The planning stage of the very ambitious project stretched on for 50 years, and it’s believed construction will take nearly as long. Work has been underway since 2002, and the estimated completion date is in 2050.
Number 6. Great Man-Made River Project. Libya is among the driest nations in the world, but thankfully while drilling for oil a very large water supply was found. Getting to it and piping it to where it’s needed is no small task. Finishing up the project, which was begun in 1984, will likely take another quarter of a century.
Number 5. Gotthard Base Tunnel. It’s understandable that what’s going to become the world’s longest train tunnel is taking a good amount of time to build. Further, making it happen requires digging a giant hole beneath the Alps that extends from Germany to Italy. Workers have already put in around 17 years but may have as little as 1-and-a-half more to go.
Number 4. The 10 Thousand Year Clock. Amazon-dot-com founder Jeff Bezos is spearheading the building of a clock that will run, as its name suggests, for 10 thousand years. There are no estimates as to when it will be up and ticking, but it’s not expected to be soon.
Number 3.California High Speed Train. On January 6th of 2015 ground was broken for what is the United States’ very first foray into bullet trains. It will eventually travel between San Francisco and Los Angeles, but don’t rush out and buy a ticket. The line isn’t expected to be operational until about 2029.
Number 2. Nuclear Fusion Reactors. The race is on to be the first entity to make a very compact energy source that can power tens of thousands of homes, but it’s not a very fast one. The need for such a thing was recognized many years ago, and those working to make it a fully functioning reality say they’re still at least 10 to 20 years away from doing so.
Number 1. UK’s High Speed 2 Rail Project. Upon its proposal in 2013, the anticipated timeline for the endeavor was 20 years. Included in that estimate were a number of possible delays, but it appears the project has already run into some unanticipated snags involving routes and funding approval.
Which long-enduring project would you most like to see finished?

The project - known as Tav (Treno Alta Velocita) - is behind schedule and there have been big demonstrations against it.

The highest point of the stress-strain curve is the UTS. It is an intensive property; therefore its value does not depend on the size of the test specimen. However, it is dependent on other factors, such as the preparation of the specimen, the presence or otherwise of surface defects, and the temperature of the test environment and material.
Tensile strengths are rarely used in the design of ductile members, but they are important in brittle members. They are tabulated for common materials such as alloys, composite materials, ceramics, plastics, and wood.
Tensile strength is defined as a stress, which is measured as force per unit area. For some non-homogeneous materials (or for assembled components) it can be reported just as a force or as a force per unit width. In the SI system, the unit is the pascal (Pa) (or a multiple thereof, often megapascals (MPa), using the mega- prefix); or, equivalently to pascals, newtons per square metre (N/m²). A United States customary unit is pounds-force per square inch (lbf/in² or psi), or kilo-pounds per square inch (ksi, or sometimes kpsi), which is equal to 1000 psi; kilo-pounds per square inch are commonly used when measuring tensile strengths.
This documentary travels from the deck of a U.S. naval aircraft carrier to a demolition derby to the country's top research labs to check in with experts who are re-engineering what nature has given us to create the next generation of strong stuff.
This documentary takes a look at what defines strength, examining everything from steel cables to mollusks to a toucan's beak.
What is the strongest material in the world? Is it steel, Kevlar, carbon nanotubes, or something entirely new?
