FLOWER:GYNOECIUM or PISTIL: It is innermost and fourth whorl of the flower. It is the central part of the flower and female reproductive organ. It is made up of one or more carpels. Carpels are also called MEGASPOROPHYLLS. A typical carpel consists of three parts such as ovary, style and stigma. NUMBER OF CARPELS:Based on the number of carpels, the gynoecium in angiosperms is of the following types.MONOCARPELLARY GYNOECIUM: One carpel is present. Example: Dolichos.BICARPELLARY GYNOECIUM: Two carpels are present. Example: Solanum,TRICARPELLARY GYNOECIUM: Three carpels are present. Example: Allium.TETRACARPELLARY GYNOECIUM: Four carpels are presnt. Example: Oenothera.PENTACARPELLARY GYNOECIUM: Five carpels are present. Example: Hibiscus.MULTICARPELLARY GYNOECIUM: Many carpels or more than five carpels are present. Example: Abutilon.FUSION OF CARPELS: In the gynoecium, carpels are present either in free or fused state. Based on this, two types of gynoecium are classified as follows:APOCARPOUS GYNOECIUM: Carpels are free in the gynoecium. Example: Nelumbo, Michelia.SYNCARPOUS GYNOCEIUM: Carpels are fused in the gynoecium. Example: Datura. In Hibiscus, carpels are fused partly.OVARY:The basal swollen part of the gynoecium is called OVARY.It encloses the ovules. It is shows one to many chambers or compartments, due to the presence of septa, formed by the fusion of margins of adjacent of carpels. Each chamber in the ovary is called LOCULE.Based on the number of locules in the ovary, ovary is of different types. as follows:UNILOCULAR OVARY: One locule is present. Example: Dolichos.BILOCULAR OVARY: Two locules are present. Example: Solanum.TRILOCULAR OVARY: Three locules are present. Example: Allium TETRALOCULAR OVARY: Four locules are present. It is of following types.TRIMEROUS: In each whorl three or multiples of three are present. Example: Allium. These are found in monocots.PENTAMEROUS: In each whorl five or multiples of five are present Example: Hibiscus.SYMMETRY IN STRUCTURE: Based on the symmetry in structure, flowers are of three types, as follows: ACTINOMORPHIC FLOWER:A flower can be cut into two equal halves by any vertical section passing through the centre. ANDROECIUM:It is the third whorl of the flower.It is present between corolla and gynoecium or second and fourth whorl.It is one of the essential organ of the flower and consists of stamens or microsporophylls.The stamens are male reproductive organs of the flower.STAMINODE: Sterile stamens are called staminodes. Example:CassiaPARTS OF A STAMEN: Each stamen has two main parts, 1.Filament and 2.Anther. FILAMENT:The stalk of the stamen is called filament.ANTHER: The upper swollen part of the stamen is called anther.CONNECTIVE: The tissue connecting the anther and filament is called connective.Externally, it appears like a longitudinal grove. ANTHER:The upper swollen part of the stamen is called Anther. It contains one or two sac like structures called ANTHER LOBES.Based on the number of anther lobes, anthers are of two types.DITHECOUS ANTHER: Anther with two lobes. It commonly appears in plants. Example:Datura.MONOTHECOUS ANTHER:Anther with one lobe. Example:Hibiscus.INTRORSE:The dehiscence of anthers occurs towards the outer side of the flower. Example:Hibiscus.EXTRORSE: The dehiscence of anthers occurs towards the innerside of the flower.Example:Datura. ATTACHMENT OF FILAMENT TO ANTHERS:The filament is attached to anther in different ways as follows:1. Basifixed, 2. Adnate, 3. Dorsifixed and 4. Versatile.BASIFIXED:The filament is attached to the base of the anther. Example:Datura.ADNATE;The filament is attached to the whole length or from base to apex at the back side of the anther. Example:Nelumbo.DORSIFIXED:The filament is attached to the anther on the mid dorsal side. Example:Hibiscus.VERSATILE;The apex of the filament is pointed and is attached to the back of the anther at a point.The anther can swing freely in any direction. Example:Oryzasativa.LENGTH OF STAMENS:In some flowers, length of stamens and length of the corolla are not of same height, Based on this, two types of androecium are noticed, as follows:DIDYNAMOUSANDROECIUM:Androecium has four stamens, in which two stamens are long and two stamens are short and are present in two whorls. Example:Ocimum.TETRADYNAMOUSANDROECIUM:Androecium has six stamens, in which four stamens are long, two stamens are short and are present in two whorls.It is characaterstic feature of family Brassicaceae.Example:Brassica.Based on the length of stamens when compared to other floral parts(petals), they are of two types.INSERTED STAMENS:In some flowers the filaments are shorter than the petals. So,thestamens remain within the flower. Examples:Datura, Dolichos.EXERTED STAMENS: In some flowers, the filaments of the stamens are longer than the petals, The stamens come out of the flowers. It is also found in unilocular ovary. Example: Brassica, Cucurbita.AXILE PLACENTATION: The ovules are attached to a central axis of the ovary.It is found in bi to multicarpellary ovary. Example: HibiscusFREE CENTRAL PLACENTATION: The ovules are borne around the central axis freely.It is developed from axile placentation with the degeneration of septa.The ovary is multilocular in the young stage and unilocular in the mature state.Example: DianthusBASAL PLACENTATION: The ovules are borne at the base of the ovary.In this, one or few ovules are present. It is also found in unilocular ovary.Examples: Tridax, Helianthus. SUPERFICIAL PLACENTATION:The ovules are borne all round the inner surface of the septa. Example: NymphaeaSTYLE:It is an elongated part of the gynoecium present between ovary and stigma.Depending upon the position, the styles are of three types.1. Terminal, 2. Lateral and 3. Gynobasic style. TERMINAL STYLE:The style arises from the apical part ofthe ovary. Example: Hibiscus.LATERAL STYLE:The style arises from the lateral side of the ovary. Example: MangiferaGYNOBASIC STYLE: Style arises from the base of the ovary in between the four locules. Example: Ocimum. STIGMA:It is the terminal part of the gynoecium.It receives pollen grain at the time of pollination.It secretes substances during fertilization.Pollen grains germinate on the stigma by absorbing stigmatic secretions.This concludes the study of flower.
