Munna Bhai is an Indian fictional character who appears in the Munna Bhai film series. The character is created by Rajkumar Hirani and portrayed by Sanjay Dutt.

Overview

Murli Prasad Sharma (Munna Bhai) is portrayed by Sanjay Dutt. He is a "Bhai" - a leader in the Mumbai underworld. His nickname, Munna Bhai has a double meaning. It could refer to the form of "Bhai" as an honorific, as the word traditionally translates as "brother"; however, within the context of Mumbai slang, "Bhai" has also come to refer to a hoodlum. His sidekick is Circuit (portrayed by Arshad Warsi). They both speak in Bambaiya Hindi, a dialect specific to Mumbai, India.

Munnabhai M.B.B.S

Munna Bhai was first introduced in the 2003 film Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. which involves his adventures as a faux-medical student, who finally tells the truth about himself and learns to help people along the way.

Lage Raho Munnabhai

In the second movie, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, Munna Bhai becomes a faux-professor. He begins, thereafter to see the image of Mahatma Gandhi who persuades him to stop pretending he is a professor and who teaches him to help other people solve their problems through Gandhism, which Munna Bhai terms Gandhigiri.

Rajkumar Hirani

Rajkumar Hirani (born 20 November 1962) is an Indian director, screenwriter and film editor of Hindi films, best known for the films Munna Bhai MBBS (2003), Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006), 3 Idiots (2009) and PK (2014). All the films directed by him went on to become huge successes at the box office. He has also won 11 Filmfare Awards.

Early life and education

Rajkumar Hirani was born on 20 November 1962 in Nagpur to a Sindhi family. His father Suresh Hirani ran a typing institute in Nagpur. Hirani family migrated to India from Mehrabpur, Sindh (now Pakistan) during Partition of India when Suresh Hirani was 14-year-old. Rajkumar Hirani studied in St. Francis De'Sales High School, Nagpur, Maharashtra. Rajkumar did his graduation in commerce. His parents wanted him to be a Chartered Accountant but he was more keen on Theatres, Films. Hirani helped his father in his business but he wanted to be actor in Hindi films. In college days he was involved with Hindi theatre. Suresh got his son's photographs shot and packed him off to an acting school in Mumbai. But Raju could not blend in and returned to Nagpur after three days. His father then asked Raju to apply to the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune, but the acting course had shut down by then and chances of admission to the directorial course looked slim as there were far too many applicants. So Raju opted for the editing course. He earned a scholarship, thereby reducing the load on his father's shoulders.

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.

Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. is a 2003 Indian comedy film directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. The movie is based on English movie Patch Adams (film) released back in 1998. The story involves protagonist Munna Bhai (Sanjay Dutt), a goon, going to medical school. He is helped by his sidekick, Circuit (Arshad Warsi). It stars Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi, Jimmy Shergill, Sunil Dutt, Gracy Singh and Boman Irani and was later followed by a second film Lage Raho Munna Bhai, and became the first installment of the Munna Bhai film series.

It went on to win the 2004 National Film Award for Best Popular Film, and several Filmfare awards, including the Critics Award for Best Movie and Best Screenplay. It was declared a 'Blockbuster' at the Indian Box office and achieved silver jubilee status (25 week run) being one of only eight films to have achieved this statues since the year 2000. In its 26th week of release the film could still be found playing on 257 screens throughout India.
