Meena Kumari

Meena Kumari (1 August 1932 – 31 March 1972), born Mahjabeen Bano, was an Indian film actress and poet. She is regarded as one of the most prominent actresses to have appeared on the screens of Hindi Cinema. During a career spanning 30 years from her childhood to her death, she starred in more than ninety films, many of which have achieved classic and cult status today. She is regarded as one of the geatest Hindi movie actresses of all time.

Kumari gained a reputation for playing grief-stricken and tragic roles, and her performances have been praised and reminisced throughout the years. Like one of her best-known roles, Chhoti Bahu, in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962), Kumari became addicted to alcohol. Her life and prosperous career were marred by heavy drinking, troubled relationships, an ensuing deteriorating health, and her death from liver cirrhosis in 1972. Kumari is often cited by media and literary sources as "The Tragedy Queen", both for her frequent portrayal of sorrowful and dramatic roles in her films and her real-life story.

Karan Dewan

Karan Dewan (born Dewan Karan Chopra; 6 November 1917 - 2 August 1979) was an Indian cinema actor in Hindi films. He worked in over seventy films from 1941–79. He started as a journalist while still in college, editing a film-based magazine in Urdu. His brother was a film producer and director, Jaimani Dewan.

His decisive film was Rattan (1944) which turned out to be the biggest hit of 1944. He was given a break as a singer by music director Naushad and his song "Jab Tum Hi Chale Pardes" became popular. He sang in films like Piya Ghar Aaja (1947), Mitti Ke Khiloune (1948), and Lahore (1949). His other important films were Zeenat (1945), Lahore (1949), Dahej (1950), Bahar (1951), Teen Batti Char Raasta (1953). Known as a "jubilee star", about twenty of his films are stated to have been jubilee (twenty-five weeks or more) hits.

Dewan married co-actress Manju in 1944 following the release of Rattan in which she had a character role. By 1966, he was working as a casting agent for the film unit of Maya (1966). He continued to work in the 1960s and 1970s playing supporting parts in films like Apna Ghar (1960), Shaheed (1965), Jeene KI Raah (1969), Nadaan (1971), with the last film in which he was credited being Sohanlal Kanwar's Atmaram (1979).

Music director

Madan Mohan

Madan Mohan is a form of the Hindu god, Krishna. Krishna is celebrated as Madan Mohan, who mesmerises everyone. His consort, Radha is glorified as Madan Mohan's Mohini, the mesmeriser of the mesmeriser for spiritual aspirants. Radha is known as the mediator without whom access to Krishna is not possible.

Originally from Shri Vrindavan, Madan Mohan ji went to Amer in Jaipur with Raja Sawai Jai Singh II — the founder of Jaipur and from there was brought to Karauli in Rajasthan by Maharaj Gopal Singh after he conquered the battle of Daulatabad.

Menna Kumari's real name was Mahjabeen. She was forced to act in the movies since she was 7 years of age. She didn't want to work in the movies but her father Ali Baksh didn't think so, he forced her to work in movies. She wanted to go to school like other girls, but was not allowed to do so. She soon became the breadwinner for her family. She worked in several movies since then but got the actual fame from the film Baiju Banwara. She became the first actress to win a Filmfare award. Then in 1952 she fell in love with Kamal Amrohi, who was 15 year elder to her and was already married. She at that time too expressed her feelings in poetry she wrote "Dil saa jab saathi paya Bechaini bhi woh saath le aaya" Then they produced a film Daera which was based on their love story. They also planned of yet another movie that was Pakeezah but it took 16 long years to reach the silver screen. You all might have seen the song Inhi logo ne in color but the song originally was shot in black and white and thereafter it was re-shot in color. Then differences between Amrohi and Meena Kumari kept on increasing as they both were of strong personality. Amrohi didn't want a child from Meena Kumari as she was not a Syed and she raised Amrohi's son. But the differences between them, ended only when they both got divorced in 1964. Meena Kumari was not able to take the separation lightly she really suffered after that she expressed her feelings in poetry stating that "Talaaq to day rahay ho Nazar-e-qehar ke saath Jawani bhi meri lauta do Mehar ke saath" She started to drink, she was so addicted to drinking that she took whisky even to the sets in a Detol bottle. Then many actors came in her life like Dharmendra,Gulzaar & Pradeep Kumar. Amrohi couldn't really take it he abused her for her relationships with other actors. He even spied on her, she really got fed of all these activities done by Amrohi and one day in front of the detective send by Amrohi to spy on Meena Kumari, she hugged Gulzaar and expressed her love for him. Amrohi was really annoyed by the whole sequence. Kamal Amrohi had space for Meena Kumari in his films but had no space for her in his life. In the mean time, she got more and more addicted to alcohol. At last Pakeezaah released people really got crazy to see their tragedy queen in the movie. Three weeks after the movie was released she died of liver Cancer, it is said that her financial condition was so poor at that time, that she was not even able to pay the bills of the nursing home in which she was admitted.It's said that when she was dying Kamaal was there with her. This is how a great Tragedy queen died and we lost a great super star. At this point we remember one of the sayings from Meena Kumari "Tum kya karoge sun kar mujh se meri kahani, Be lutf zindagi ke kisse hain pheeke pheeke"...

Storyline Circa the Mugal rule in Hindustan, Shahjahan, the present emperor is approached by one of his subjects, whose daughter, Ruhi, is so beautiful, that her suitors have killed her to-be grooms, as well as two of her brothers, who came to her aid. He now seeks the Emperor's assistance. Appalled at this, the Emperor confers with his Queen, Mumtaz, and upon her advise asks the father to bring his daughter to be a guest of the palace, and it is from here that a suitor will be chosen by none other than his royal majesty himself. The father does as asked, but one of the Queen's aide is troubled by Ruhi's august presence, that she fears that the Emperor may take a liking to her, and make her his begum. She plots a devious scheme so that Ruhi is promised to get married to Shiraz. The matter gets quite complicated as Ruhi has already been promised to Sohail. The Emperor and his Queen are so perturbed by this situation..

Zohrabai Agrewali (1868--1913) was one of the most noted and influential singers of Hindustani Classical Music from the early 1900s. Along with Gauhar Jan, she marks the dying phase of the courtesan singing tradition in Indian classical music. She is known for her macho style of singing. She belonged to the Agra gharana (lit. Agrewali = from Agra). She was trained by Ustad Sher Khan, Ustad Kallan Khan and the noted composer Mehboob Khan (Daras Piya) She was known both for khayal as well as lighter varieties including Thumri and Ghazals which she learned from Ahmad Khan of Dhaka. Her singing influenced Ustad Faiyaz Khan, the greatest name in the Agra Gharana in modern times, and even Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of the Patiala Gharana held her in high regard. It was the highest grossing Indian film of 1944 and is cited as an "All Time Blockbuster".[1] The film is noted as the film which made Naushad one of the top contributors to music in Indian films and enabled him to demand a fee of Rs 25000 a film.The heroine of the movie Swaran Lata had said in a live interview with the PTV that the tunes of the songs of Rattan were set by the lyricist D. N. Madhok himself.Film expert and author Rajesh Subramanian opines that Kardar production spent rupees seventy five thousand in 1944 to make ‘Rattan’.
