A crater lake is a lake that forms in a volcanic crater or caldera, such as a maar; less commonly and with lower association to the term a lake may form in an impact crater caused by a meteorite, or in an artificial explosion caused by humans. Sometimes lakes which form inside calderas are called caldera lakes, but often this distinction is not made. Crater lakes covering active (fumarolic) volcanic vents are sometimes known as volcanic lakes, and the water within them is often acidic, saturated with volcanic gases, and cloudy with a strong greenish color. Lakes located in dormant or extinct volcanoes tend to have fresh water, and the water clarity in such lakes can be exceptional due to the lack of inflowing streams and sediment.
Lava lakes, a rare phenomenon where a volcanic crater can sustainably contain a significant volume of molten lava, are discussed in a separate article.
Crater lakes form as precipitation within the rim fills the created depression. The water level rises until an equilibrium is reached between the rate of incoming and outgoing water. Sources of water loss singly or together, may include evaporation, subsurface seepage, and in places, surface leakage or overflow when the lake level reaches the lowest point on its rim. At such a saddle location, the upper portion of the lake is contained only by its adjacent natural volcanic dam; continued leakage through or surface outflow across the dam can erode its included material, thus lowering lake level until a new equilibrium of water flow, erosion and rock resistance is established. If the volcanic dam portion erodes rapidly or fails catastrophically, the occurrence produces a breakout or outburst flood. With changes in environmental conditions over time, the occurrence of such floods is common to all natural dam types.

Now that all that junk is out of the way prepare yourselves for FUN FACTS ABOUT THIS VIDEO!
1. Speaking only on literal scale, this is the biggest video I've ever made.
2. All the desert scenes take place on a Martian crater model known as Gale crater.
3. 5 Buildings were destroyed in the making of this video.
4. The city is actually a super massive scene-build consisting of more than 800 separate props placed by hand.
5. The running sequence inside the falling building consisted of nearly 100 hand animated props to simulate the building falling.
6. The ending scene where the building falls to the ground consisted of nearly 25000 particles across 4 separate particle systems.

Evaluation of the traversability of the landing sites and target "go to" areas outside of the ellipse using slope and material properties information indicates that all are trafficable and "go to" sites can be accessed within the lifetime of the mission. In the final selection, Gale crater was favored over Eberswalde based on its greater diversity and potential habitability.

Thanks to Kjell for emailing this image on over to me I apologize that it took me so long to get to it. Things have been hectic here with my mother having surgery but everything went wonderful and she is recovering! My friend Stefan (EclipseFire Xin) did a great image covering the anomalies on this image as well that I show in the video and will link below as well! You can find him on YouTube, Facebook & now on WUITS! So this image totally looks to be the typical Uncle Jakes Junkyard filled with Intelligently designed rubble and ruins all over this area of the Gale Crater! I love the one in the thumbnail that looks like a modern day wash pan, bedpan.. ;) This one is worth a download and I will be doing a video from the same SOL very shortly so stay tuned! I can't wait to hear what you all think about this one!
