Aaron Copland (/ˌærən ˈkoʊplənd/; November 14, 1900 – December 2, 1990) was an American composer, composition teacher, writer, and later in his career a conductor of his own and other American music. Instrumental in forging a distinctly American style of composition, in his later years he was often referred to as "the Dean of American Composers" and is best known to the public for the works he wrote in the 1930s and 1940s in a deliberately accessible style often referred to as "populist" and which the composer labeled his "vernacular" style. Works in this vein include the ballets Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid and Rodeo, his Fanfare for the Common Man and Third Symphony. The open, slowly changing harmonies of many of his works are archetypical of what many people consider to be the sound of American music, evoking the vast American landscape and pioneer spirit. In addition to his ballets and orchestral works, he produced music in many other genres including chamber music, vocal works, opera and film scores.

The refugee camp where the aliens were located has deteriorated into a militarized ghetto called District 9, where they are confined and exploited in squalor. In 2010, the munitions corporation, Multi-National United, is contracted to forcibly evict the population with operative Wikus van der Merwe in charge. In this operation, Wikus is exposed to a strange alien chemical and must rely on the help of his only two new 'Prawn' friends.

Plot: The year is 1940. Hitler has invaded Poland causing both France and Great Britain to declare war on Germany. Fearing an imminent attack by the German Luftwaffe, Londoners are told to start the evacuation of children to safer areas outside the city. Many are sent to rural provinces, but a few are sent by ship to Canada and America... As the German Luftwaffe drop bombs over the city of London, Caroline Price struggles to accept her new home in America and her new family, the Johnsons. Caroline patiently waits for a letter from her Mother, informing her that she may return to London, but as the days go by and as the war abroad rages on without any sign from her parents, she begins to fear the worst. "Caroline Crossing" is an intimate portrayal of a young girl, torn from the only home she ever knew, who must find a way to survive against the backdrop of a world at war.
