A Thailand News Update on the state of the air in Southern Thailand during this horrible air pollution caused by fires in Indonesia.
The air in Krabi, Thailand has been of very poor quality with a high PPM for one solid week now. The sun can be seen clearly in this video, like you're looking through a sun filter on a camera. Thailand's air is THAT BAD.
If you have asthma, the poor air quality may or may not bother you. I have a bit of asthma and it doesn't bother me. However, the neighbors next store are coughing constantly like they're going to have conniptions. It's a bad time to visit Krabi, Phuket, Trang, and other southern Thailand locations for now. I am not sure about the state of the rest of the country.

It begins on April 13 every year (Thai New Year) and is celebrated all over Thailand. In some areas it lasts one day, in others it lasts up to 9 days. Everyone is in great spirits and out to enjoy themselves and have fun. Songkran is definitely one of the best things to do in Thailand … everyone should do it at least once! I came for Songkran for the first time 4 years ago and I’ve been to every one since. This was filmed in Ao Nang in Krabi Thailand on April 13 and 14, 2015.
Parts were filmed while walking on the street, other bits from a tuk tuk and some from a motorbike. Renting motor scooters in Thailand is also a lot of fun! Check out my video "Renting motor scooters in Thailand" for tips on how to do it safely and legally.

These types of boats are the main career tools for the local fishermen at Haad Yao village of Krabi's Nue Klong district. Their special feature is the curved bow about 1 metre high at the boat front: This is called in Thai 'Hua Tong'. It is said to help boat operators to accurately navigate the boat to the right destination or direction as well as help the boat balanced while being in the water.
Boat building is getting common in the Andaman region of southern Thailand's fishing communities. This type of boat is presently used to take tourists out to explore the natural beauty of Krabi.
Being inspired from its unique function and relating to tourist service, the villagers at Ban Nateen in the famous tourist area of Ao Nang gathered and produce tiny boat models for souvenirs for tourists. Once they enjoy riding it, they may wish to take a model back home as a souvenir, as head of Nateen Community OTOP group Supa Khaenglee explained.
' The local villagers here use these boats for fishing. After the fishing season, the boats just stand there so we adapted them, put up the roof and made some decoration and use to take tourists out from Ao Nang Bay. When they go home they may like to tell or show their families the boats, so we build tiny models for them to be able to carry home. The materials are rubber wood which is light and soft and can be easily found locally.'.
The more important thing is that the boat souvenirs are made by both adults and local children and the products came out neatly. This is not only a very good way to make a career out of local resources and wisdom, but it also maintains the local heritage so that younger generation learn the value of their own community while visitors take with them good memories of the local community while visiting Krabi in Southern Thailand.

50,000 dog conches, known in Thai as 'Hoy Chak Teen', were released into the sea off the Sri Boya Island in Krabi's Nua Klong district in December in tribute to HM the King's 80th Birthday Anniversary. The location was chosen for the release of the sea creatures due to its natural fertility of sea grass and sea weeds in Thailand. It also originated the breeding of dog conch which today became famous sea food for the Andaman region. The activity was carried out by the Power Plant in Krabi under the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand or EGAT and local people of the Sri Borya Island.
Paitoon Suwanboriban, Director of Krabi Power plant : "We have consulted local villagers and they agreed, so we carry out the project. We just hope to increase the number of the dog conch." The dog conch is now becoming Krabi's cash animal as visitors to the province ask for the dish always listed in local restaurants' menus. It costs around 120 baht per dish. The popularity with high market demand raised concern among locals that the dog conch would rapidly decline in number.
Local villager of Sri Borya Island in Krabi : "Villagers here used to collect a large amount of dog conch each day, as much as 10 kilograms per person. These days if you can collect 3 kilos that's good enough. It declines sharply." The concern led to Power Plant in Krabi conducting the cultivation and breeding and releasing baby ones into nature. They also took the opportunity to educate, to raise awareness among local residents to collect the sea food only when they are mature so that it leads to sustainable living of dog conch, with the sea grass and also the economy for people at large.

Coconuts are fruit of wonders as they can be consumed in many ways and forms. Even their shell can turn into cash as villagers at Ban Nateen of Krabi found out. Let's learn more from our special report how.
These members of a souvenir production group at Ban Nateen are working together as a group to transform and decorate local small coconut shells into different shapes including animals and other utensils in modern style. The products became famous for tourists who visit the area. Ban Nateen community is part of the famous tourist location of Krabi's Ao Nang.
The group was founded 19 years ago under the initiative of the present head of the group Supa Khwaeng-lee who started to use coconut shells from household consumption to make souvenirs. The natural texture of the shell, which is also durable, enables easy drawing and cutting, crafting for different pattern and styles. The group members' creativities always come up with new ideas which led to the products' recognition as Krabi's One Tambon One Product or OTOP.
"Our products are categorized into 3 types. The first one is household utensil including dishes, plates, spoons, secondly accessories like necklaces, ear rings and accessories, and thirdly, all types of souvenirs like Logo for any organization, wedding souvenirs and so on. "
Who would imagine that the left overs like coconut shell can be a major source of income for members of this community, one that may be earns 3,000 to over 10,000 baht per month. The peak for orders is November to April as it is tourist season for the Andaman region.

Krabi
Krabi Town (Thai: กระบี่) is the main town in the province of Krabi (thesaban mueang) on the west coast of southern Thailand at the mouth of the Krabi River where it empties in Phang Nga Bay. As of 2010 the town had a population of 52,867. The town is the capital of Krabi Province and Krabi District. Tourism is an important industry. Krabi is 783 km south of Bangkok by road.
Administration
The town covers the tambon Paknam and Krabi Yai of Krabi district, and is subdivided into 10 communities (chumchon).
Location
Krabi is a southern province on Thailand's Andaman seaboard with perhaps the country's oldest history of continued settlement. After dating stone tools, ancient colored pictures, beads, pottery, and skeletal remains found in the province's many cliffs and caves, it is thought that Krabi has been home to Homo sapiens since c. 25,000–35,000 BCE. In recorded times it was called the "Ban Thai Samor", and was one of twelve towns that used, before people were widely literate, the monkey for their standard. At that time, c. 1200 CE, Krabi was tributary to the Kingdom of Ligor, a city on the Kra Peninsula's east coast better known today as Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The dog conch is now becoming Krabi's cash animal as visitors to the province ask for the dish always listed in local restaurants' menus. It costs around 120 baht per dish. The popularity with high market demand raised concern among locals that the dog conch would rapidly decline in number. Local villager of Sri Borya Island in Krabi : "Villagers here used to collect a large amount of dog conch each day, as much as 10 kilograms per person. These days if you can collect 3 kilos that's good enough. It declines sharply." The concern led to Power Plant in Krabi conducting the cultivation and breeding and releasing baby ones into nature. They also took the opportunity to educate, to raise awareness among local residents to collect the sea food only when they are mature so that it leads to sustainable living of dog conch, with the sea grass and also the economy for people at large. -

These members of a souvenir production group at Ban Nateen are working together as a group to transform and decorate local small coconut shells into different shapes including animals and other utensils in modern style. The products became famous for tourists who visit the area. Ban Nateen community is part of the famous tourist location of Krabi's Ao Nang. The group was founded 19 years ago under the initiative of the present head of the group Supa Khwaeng-lee who started to use coconut shells from household consumption to make souvenirs. The natural texture of the shell, which is also durable, enables easy drawing and cutting, crafting for different pattern and styles. The group members' creativities always come up with new ideas which led to the products' recognition as Krabi's One Tambon One Product or OTOP. "Our products are categorized into 3 types. The first one is household utensil including dishes, plates, spoons, secondly accessories like necklaces, ear rings and accessories, and thirdly, all types of souvenirs like Logo for any organization, wedding souvenirs and so on. " Who would imagine that the left overs like coconut shell can be a major source of income for members of this community, one that may be earns 3,000 to over 10,000 baht per month. The peak for orders is November to April as it is tourist season for the Andaman region. -

A Thailand News Update on the state of the air in Southern Thailand during this horrible air pollution caused by fires in Indonesia. The air in Krabi, Thailand has been of very poor quality with a high PPM for one solid week now. The sun can be seen clearly in this video, like you're looking through a sun filter on a camera. Thailand's air is THAT BAD. If you have asthma, the poor air quality may or may not bother you. I have a bit of asthma and it doesn't bother me. These types of boats are the main career tools for the local fishermen at Haad Yao village of Krabi's Nue Klong district. Their special feature is the curved bow about 1 metre high at the boat front: This is called in Thai 'Hua Tong'. It is said to help boat operators to accurately navigate the boat to the right destination or direction as well as help the boat balanced while being in the water.
Boat building is getting common in the Andaman region of southern Thailand's fishing communities. This type of boat is presently used to take tourists out to explore the natural beauty of Krabi.
Being inspired from its unique function and relating to tourist service, the villagers at Ban Nateen in the famous tourist area of Ao Nang gathered and produce tiny boat models for souvenirs for tourists. Once they enjoy riding it, they may wish to take a model back home as a souvenir, as head of Nateen Community OTOP group Supa Khaenglee explained.
' The local villagers here use these boats for fishing. After the fishing season, the boats just stand there so we adapted them, put up the roof and made some decoration and use to take tourists out from Ao Nang Bay. When they go home they may like to tell or show their families the boats, so we build tiny models for them to be able to carry home. The materials are rubber wood which is light and soft and can be easily found locally.'.
The more important thing is that the boat souvenirs are made by both adults and local children and the products came out neatly. This is not only a very good way to make a career out of local resources and wisdom, but it also maintains the local heritage so that younger generation learn the value of their own community while visitors take with them good memories of the local community while visiting Krabi in Southern Thailand.

50,000 dog conches, known in Thai as 'Hoy Chak Teen', were released into the sea off the Sri Boya Island in Krabi's Nua Klong district in December in tribute to HM the King's 80th Birthday Anniversary. The location was chosen for the release of the sea creatures due to its natural fertility of sea grass and sea weeds in Thailand. It also originated the breeding of dog conch which today became famous sea food for the Andaman region. The activity was carried out by the Power Plant in Krabi under the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand or EGAT and local people of the Sri Borya Island.
Paitoon Suwanboriban, Director of Krabi Power plant : "We have consulted local villagers and they agreed, so we carry out the project. We just hope to increase the number of the dog conch." The dog conch is now becoming Krabi's cash animal as visitors to the province ask for the dish always listed in local restaurants' menus. It costs around 120 baht per dish. The popularity with high market demand raised concern among locals that the dog conch would rapidly decline in number.
Local villager of Sri Borya Island in Krabi : "Villagers here used to collect a large amount of dog conch each day, as much as 10 kilograms per person. These days if you can collect 3 kilos that's good enough. It declines sharply." The concern led to Power Plant in Krabi conducting the cultivation and breeding and releasing baby ones into nature. They also took the opportunity to educate, to raise awareness among local residents to collect the sea food only when they are mature so that it leads to sustainable living of dog conch, with the sea grass and also the economy for people at large.

Coconuts are fruit of wonders as they can be consumed in many ways and forms. Even their shell can turn into cash as villagers at Ban Nateen of Krabi found out. Let's learn more from our special report how.
These members of a souvenir production group at Ban Nateen are working together as a group to transform and decorate local small coconut shells into different shapes including animals and other utensils in modern style. The products became famous for tourists who visit the area. Ban Nateen community is part of the famous tourist location of Krabi's Ao Nang.
The group was founded 19 years ago under the initiative of the present head of the group Supa Khwaeng-lee who started to use coconut shells from household consumption to make souvenirs. The natural texture of the shell, which is also durable, enables easy drawing and cutting, crafting for different pattern and styles. The group members' creativities always come up with new ideas which led to the products' recognition as Krabi's One Tambon One Product or OTOP.
"Our products are categorized into 3 types. The first one is household utensil including dishes, plates, spoons, secondly accessories like necklaces, ear rings and accessories, and thirdly, all types of souvenirs like Logo for any organization, wedding souvenirs and so on. "
Who would imagine that the left overs like coconut shell can be a major source of income for members of this community, one that may be earns 3,000 to over 10,000 baht per month. The peak for orders is November to April as it is tourist season for the Andaman region.

I went on this trip with no plan whatsoever. Literally. I just booked my flight to Krabi Thailand and figured it all out as I went. I stayed at a really cheap hotel near the city center of Krabi, and I went and booked my tours.
The first tour I went on was out to the Phi Phi Islands. It was fabulous. We stopped of at a few different islands on the way as we snorkeled, went fishing, chilled on the beach, played in the water and so much more. The tour guides were fabulous. We took a speed boat that day.
My second day: I rented a motorcycle for 250 Baht/day (aprx. 10 dollars) and I just drove around. I hit up the Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua) and hiked up to the top... it was extremely tiring! I felt like Frodo and Sam from Lord of the Rings when they had to take the back way into Mordor up the big staircase (yes... i totally sounded like a nerd right there) I also hit up the Emerald Pool, hot streams, and anything else along the way.
Third and final day: I took a tour out to Hong Island on a long tail boat. On the way we hit up Red Island and snorkeled there. We stopped at another island... which I have since forgotten the name. and finally we got to Hong Island. We kayaked and it was just a blast.
If you ever want to go to Krabi, I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an adventure!
On a technical note:
Film by Nathan Bartling using a Panasonic GH4 filmed at 4K/UHD resolution.
Edited using Premiere Pro CC
Barely any colors were changed in Post Production. This is literally all straight out of the camera. There were three shots that I stabilized at 15% and I believe about 5 shots with little color correction, but besides that it's all straight out of the camera.
I used a Glidecam HD 2000 for all of the smoothe "floating" shots
