Paul Stirling

Paul Robert Stirling (born 3 September 1990) is an Irish cricketer. He debuted in first-class cricket in March 2008, playing for Ireland in the Intercontinental Cup. The same year Stirling made his debut in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Having represented Middlesex's youth sides and Second XI, Stirling signed a contract with the club in December 2009. A month later he was awarded a contract with Cricket Ireland, making him one of six players with a full-time contract with the board. He made his twenty20 and List A debuts for Middlesex in 2010 and 2011 respectively.

Early career

In July 2009, Stirling scored his maiden first-class century. In Ireland's opening match of the 2009–10 ICC Intercontinental Cup, he opened the batting with Jeremy Bray and in the first innings scored 100. Stirling was a member of the Ireland squad that participated in 2010 Under-19 World Cup hosted by New Zealand in January. The team were runners-up to Bangladesh in the Plate Championship, finishing tenth overall out of 16 teams. Stirling was the team's leading run-scorer, with 209 from five matches.

Stirling (/ˈstɜːrlɪŋ/; Scots: Stirlin; Scottish Gaelic: Sruighlea [ˈs̪t̪ruʝlə]) is a city in central Scotland. The city is clustered around a large fortress and medieval old town. Stirling is the administrative centre for the Stirling council area, and is traditionally the county town of Stirlingshire. The city is located several miles to the west of the mouth of the River Forth. Historically it was strategically important as the "Gateway to the Highlands", with its position near the Highland Boundary Fault between the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands and has been described as the brooch which clasps the Highlands and the Lowlands together.

Its historical position as the nearest crossing of the Forth to the river mouth meant that it attracted invaders. The beast of Stirling is the wolf, which it shares with Rome. According to legend, when Stirling was under attack from Viking invaders, a wolf howled, alerting the townspeople in time to save the town.

Barisal Burners (Bengali: বরিশাল বার্নার্স; often abbreviated as BB) was a franchise cricket team that played in the Bangladesh Premier League representing the division of Barisal, Bangladesh. The team participated in first two seasons of Bangladesh Premier League. The team was led by Brad Hodge and coached by Sarwar Imran. The team was owned by Alif Group. Barisal Burners became the runner-up of the first edition.

Franchise history

In 2012, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) created the cricket tournament Bangladesh Premier League based on the Twenty20 form of the game. Six teams participated in the inaugural tournament, beginning 9 February 2012. The teams representing six different Divisions of Bangladesh, including Barisal, were put up on auction in Dhaka on 10 January 2012 at the Radisson Hotel. The Barisal Burners were bought by ALIF SSL Sports Holdings Ltd (A Concern of Alif Group) for a price of USD 1.01 million.

2012 season

The Barisal Burners had been the cheapest buy of players and franchise at the beginning of the tournament. Their biggest buy was West Indies opener Chris Gayle bought for a grand total of $551,000, the second biggest buy of the inaugural BPL, however he was only available for five games. In his short stay he was able to score two centuries and had the highest average of 97.00. They continued with the destructive Ahmed Shehzad and experienced Brad Hodge opening the batting to provide a stable batting line up which qualified them for the semi finals. A close chase against Chittagong Kings qualified them narrowly to progress to the knock out stages to finish as the runner-up.
