Latest findings show Tsuo Chen Man 3,000 years old, not 30,000 as once thought
Remains of Tsuo Chen Man have always been thought to be Taiwan’s oldest human bones, dating back 20,000 to 30,000 years. But history may now have to be rewritten, because carbon-14 dating tests done overseas on Tsuo Chen Man bones collected by the National Taiwan Museum overturned conventional wisdom.Visit the Tainan Tsai-liao Fossil Museum or look at textbooks and they’ll tell you Tsuo Chen Man i

The Museum of National Prehistory is located in Taitung City and is a fabulous, do not miss, museum. Marine Steve and I have been known to speed through museums in less than 10 minutes but this was a keeper. There are two floors filled with information that even our pea-brains (which according to the museum have gotten smaller over the last 50,000 years) could find interesting.
There was a prehistory gallery, Taiwan in the Iron Age, how prehistory people lived, the Beinan culture, stone working, megaliths, human evolution. And all 14 aboriginal tribes along with audio visual, videos, movies. The Ring of Fire. Geology.
How about: the brain of a newborn human and newborn chimpanzee are the same size but a child's brain at age 5 is three times the size of a chimpanzee!
All exhibits are in Chinese and English, audio guides are available but completely unnecessary and there is a high class gift shop. What more could a visitor ask?

But tests of Tsuo Chen Man fossils sent to the United States and Australia by the National Taiwan Museum came up with very different results. Li Tzu-ningNational Taiwan Museum ResearcherThe two laboratories in independent tests found that the bone fragments from a Tsuo Chen Man were only about 3,000 years old. Tsuo Chen Man has always been considered the earliest human fossils in Taiwan, but that may now no longer be the case. Academia Sinica argued, however, that the finding does not change the prehistory of Taiwan. Liu Yi-changAcademia Sinica Research FellowAll it means is that there is a small gap in evidence in the prehistory of Taiwan. We lacked human bone evidence. But cultural evidence does exist. With Tsuo Chen Man now dating back only 3,000 years, the Dapenkeng culture dating back around 7,000 years may now become Taiwan’s oldest known human culture.

The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) is honored to partner with six leading Taiwan museums to promote an anti-wildlife trafficking campaign titled "Culture and Conservation." project.
On December 11 at the American Center AIT Direct Marut joined Directors and representatives of six of Taiwan’s leading museums to launch the “Culture and Conservation” anti-wildlife trafficking campaign. The “Culture and Conservation” poster is on display in museum galleries around Taiwan delivering the message that “Ivory Collections Only Belong in Museums.”
In remarks at yesterday's event, AIT Director Marut and National Palace Museum Director Fung Ming-chu emphasized the importance of wildlife conservation and explained how Taiwan museums' popularity will allow the program potentially to reach millions of visitors with the message that purchasing ivory or rhino horn products imperils the existence of these species and must stop.
Other participants in the event included Director Chang Yu-tang of the National Museum of History, Director Sun Wei-hsin of the National Museum of Natural Science, Director Chang Shan-nan of the National Museum of Prehistory, Director Chen Chih-ming of the National Taiwan Museum and Professor Fang Tonyun of the National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium. The entire collection of Taiwan's National Palace Museum contains over 650,000 objects of art and serves as a sanctuary for precious masterpieces and the treasure house of human civilization. The marvelous story of this national treasure's move to Taiwan is testament to the diligent effort by its people to preserve the legacies of human civilization. This story also depicts the museum's 50 years of history in Taiwan, from preservation, to research, to educational outreach programs, to digitalizing the art collection. Take a peek at the ongoing changes at the museum, such as privatization and active efforts to bring the cultural relics out of the secluded vaults of the palace to the people. The National Palace Museum's integration with society acknowledges the localization of Taiwanese culture and represents the limitless possibilities of a Taiwan's knowledge-based economy. Incorporating cutting-edge technology with art and through the Internet, the museum is able to bring these national treasures out of its protected sanctuary, allowing Taiwan and the world to step, hand-in-hand, into the new millennium.

Japanese-American photographer Danee Hazama has worked with National Geographic magazine on photo projects of prehistoric adventures. Hazama says it's very likely that Taiwan is the origin of the Austronesian. The Photo exhibition featuring the links between Taiwan and Austronesian Cultures kicks off with prayers by a Paiwan spiritual interpreter. The show focuses on three themes - Mata, for eyes, Lima for hands and Mana for spiritual.

My Sister visited NTU Museum
Chartered during the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan, the National Taiwan University (NTU) has nearly 80 years of history with a rich academic legacy. Many unique and prestigious materials, specimens, and documents have been collected for teaching and research purposes since the establishment of the university in 1928. Collections include artifacts of the Taiwanese indigenous people and prehistory archeological sites, including samples of minerals/rocks/fossils, specimens of animals/plants/insects, and laboratory apparatuses and instruments. However, because of restricted budget and limited resources such as space and manpower, collections are only maintained by minimum preservation equipment, not for the purpose of further systematic exhibition and extension education. These precious collections have marked the great development of Taiwans higher education. If these collections are not properly stored, managed, or utilized, it would be a great loss for both the National Taiwan University and the whole Taiwanese society in the fields of natural, cultural, and academic legacy.
In October 2005, Si-Chen Lee, the president of National Taiwan University (NTU), assigned a task force led by the University Librarian, Jieh Hsiang, to integrate individual university museums. The NTU Museums Cooperation and Development Plan was thus proposed in February 2007 to promote NTU Museums image, support research, carry out educational functions, and to provide tour guide services. This plan also aims to assist individual museums to seek financial support for the renewal and refurbishment of collections and the restoration of exhibition facilities. NTU hopes to fulfill its social and educational function and responsibility if the NTU museums, with its rich collections, are to be opened to the local community and the general public. On March 20, 2007, the president of NTU officially approved of this plan and allocated the funds. On the anniversary of the university this year (November 15, 2007), the NTU Museums were inaugurated and a special exhibition was held at the Chuan-Lyu Exhibition Hall in the Gallery of NTU History.

If you are considering a visit to Taroko Gorge, this video is chock-full of information about trails, what to do and see along with its highlights. It is important to know that Taroko Gorge is the only MARBLE gorge in the world and one of Taiwan's top tourist destinations.
If not hiking any of the easy to very difficult, vertiginous trails, a long morning is enough time. Adding in one or two trails will take a day but most visitors come, put on their hard hats, jump on and off the tour bus and leave. Taroko Gorge didn't sound like much in the itinerary but is very worth doing.
