Japan's Prime Minister on Saturday visited the Museum of Japanese Immigration and met representatives of Sao Paulo's large Japanese community in the city's oriental neighbourhood of Liberdade.
Brazil is home to the world's largest ethnic Japanese population outside Japan, of which 1.5 (m) million live in the state of Sao Paulo.
After holding meetings with members of the Japanese diaspora, known as 'Nikkeis', Shinzo Abe delivered his a speech in front of an audience of mostly Japanese descendants at the Brazilian Society of Japanese Culture Centre.
He highlighted Latin America's potential growth.
The Japanese premier met Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff on Friday and endorsed loans that will help the South American giant develop offshore oil production and expand its soybean and corn crops.
Brazil is the last stop of Abe's five-nation tour of Latin America and the Caribbean that also included Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and Chile.

Japan， a country that feels so close yet so far from Korea. It is also where Korean ancestors′ painful history lives on. Korea′s kimchi used to be looked down upon in Japan for its garlic smell. Now， 70 years after Korea′s liberation， more and more Japanese people are beginning to fall in love with kimchi.
Various foods created by the Korean diaspora originated from Utoro and Ikuno－ku Koreatown. Utoro is where the 1st generation Korean Japanese settled and Ikuno－ku Koreatown is where forced Korean laborers lived during and after the construction of the Hirano Canal.
Korean Japanese took beef and pork offal Japanese didn′t eat and created horumonyaki. It was hunger that led to the creation of this dish， but it eventually became one of the most popular dishes in Japan.
Another dish created by Korean Japanese， yakiniku， is even considered one of the 3 main dine out menus in Japan along with sushi and ramen. Korea′s kimchi is also popular in Japan for its rich flavor and healthy nutrients.

She lives by two names， Yuka and Yoo－hyang， but she is Korean. She works as a food planner who fuses the fare of Japan， Italy， and France with Korea′s cooking style. She traces back the steps of the Korean diaspora and searches for the vestiges of the miracle it made in Japan.
▶Utoro′s dining table
Utoro， Isedacho， Uji－shi， Kyoto－fu 51. This is where 1，300 Koreans were forced into labor in 1941 for the purpose of building a military airfield. The forced labor continued for 4 years until the end of WWII in 1945 aborted the construction as well. The Korean laborers′ campsite was in Utoro. Even now， from the 1st generation to the 4th generation， there are many Korean－Japanese residents in Utoro. One of them is Um Yeong－bu， a 2nd generation Korean Japanese.
Even though these Korean Japanese were born and raised in Japan， they lived the life of strangers in a foreign land. Their meals are not different from Korean families′， with kimchi， spinach， buchujeon (chive pancake)， and samgyeopsal. They are everyday foods， yet in Japan， they were unusual dishes. However， the Korean Japanese continued on their tradition with pride. This was possible because of a Korean grocery truck that visited Utoro once a week. The grocery truck and Utoro residents′ meals reflect their joys and sorrows of being strangers in a foreign land.
▶From a waste to a delicacy， horumonyaki
On a shabby backstreet of Osaka， a small food stall opened in 1953. Its menu was horumonyaki. At the time， Japanese people didn′t eat beef or pork offals and threw them out. Koreans gathered them， seasoned them with chili powder and soy sauce， and grilled them over braziers. It was a good dish that could fill the hungry stomachs and provide nutrients. Member of the Japanese diaspora are nikkei (日系), or nikkeijin (日系人) - Japanese emigrants & their descendants. Since the end of World War II, Japan has sent few emigrants to other lands. The young nikkei in North, Central & South America are mostly 4th, 5th, 6th & higher generations. The majorities of these young persons are only part Japanese.
Using data from the 2000 US Census (http://goo.gl/QlNIqe), 30.7% of all people in the US who reported Japanese ancestry in 2000 were mixed.
Using data from the 2010 US Census (https://goo.gl/Lt8CpU), 41.5% of all people in the US who reported Japanese ancestry in 2010 were mixed.
The 2020 US Census will likely show that over 50% of all people in the US who report Japanese ancestry in 2020 will be mixed.
The number of individuals of full Japanese ancestry in the US FELL from 796,700 in 2000 to 763,325 in 2010, likely due to elderly deaths.

"Latin rhythms have been arriving in Japan since the early 20th century mostly filtered and refashioned by the transnational culture industries. With Latin American immigration, the flow increased, introducing new music and dancing styles, which have been creatively appropriated by Japanese Latin music fans. The (re)creation and promotion of Latino culture notwithstanding, this process has also furthered the social and cultural isolation of Latinos in Japan."

1908 marked the beginning of mass migration from Japan to Brazil. Within a decade, Japanese-language literature -- some produced in Japan and some produced locally -- had become a part of daily life; such texts continue to be produced to this day in Brazil, home of the largest population of persons of Japanese descent outside Japan. While recent scholarship has explored Japanese-language literary activity in the former colonies of the Japanese Empire, less attention has been paid to that of the 'Japanese diaspora.' This talk by Dr. Ted Mack, Associate Professor of Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Washington, will focus on the production and consumption of Japanese-language literature in pre-World War II Brazil. In so doing, it will present an empirical examination of that literature's materiality, a literary examination of three texts' stylistics, and an analytical examination of the methodological and theoretical ramifications of these texts to the study of national literatures.

Korean diaspora's food captivates China
Korean language is more commonly used than Chinese in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture located in northeast part of China. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japanese colonial era hit its peak in Korea and countless Koreans left home to settle down in Yanbian. Now, they are called "Korean Chinese."
Almost a century has passed, yet Korean Chinese people have preserved the food culture that was passed down from their parents. Their love for Korean food also captivated native Chinese people, and Yanbian even became one of the top 10 gourmet cities in China. Kimchi is known as the representative health food, and Korean side dish shops bustle with people.

Korean food expert Kim Sun-ok is also Korean Chinese. She learned how to make gochujang (chili paste) from her mother and grandmother, and she always reminded herself of her identity by eating doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). She actively publicizes Korean food, and her Korean food class at Yanbian University is a big hit.

Jeongam Village preserves hometown food
Jeongam Village was established in 1938. During the Japanese colonial era, this area was a barren land. Japan decided to move Koreans to this area in hopes of cultivating the land and plundering its resources. That's when 80 families from Chungcheongbuk-do Province immigrated to Jeongam Village.They were faced with arduous labor, cold weather, and hunger, but they remembered their hometown food. They made a simplified version of kimchi to satisfy their cravings and they filled their hungry stomachs with corn noodles. They desperately clung on to their taste of home. Their dining table tells the story of their history.

Japanese diaspora
The Japanese diaspora, and its individual members known as nikkei (日系). Nikkei are the Japanese emigrants from Japan and their descendants that are reside in a foreign country. Emigration from Japan first happened and was recorded as early as the 12th century to the Philippines, but did not become a mass phenomenon until the Meiji Era, when Japanese began to go to the Philippines,North America, and beginning in 1897 with 35 emigrants to Mexico; and later to Peru, beginning in 1899 with 790 emigrants. There was also significant emigration to the territories of the Empire of Japan during the colonial period; however, most emigrants repatriated to Japan after the end of World War II in Asia.
According to the Association of Nikkei and Japanese Abroad, there are about 2.5 million nikkei living in their adopted countries. The largest of these foreign communities are in Brazil, the United States, and the Philippines. Descendants of emigrants from the Meiji Era still hold recognizable communities in those countries, forming separate ethnic groups from Japanese peoples in Japan.

1908 marked the beginning of mass migration from Japan to Brazil. Within a decade, Japanese-language literature -- some produced in Japan and some produced locally -- had become a part of daily life; such texts continue to be produced to this day in Brazil, home of the largest population of persons of Japanese descent outside Japan. While recent scholarship has explored Japanese-language literary activity in the former colonies of the Japanese Empire, less attention has been paid to that of the 'Japanese diaspora.' This talk by Dr. Ted Mack, Associate Professor of Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Washington, will focus on the production and consumption of Japanese-language literature in pre-World War II Brazil. In so doing, it will present an empirical examination of that literature's materiality, a literary examination of three texts' stylistics, and an analytical examination of the methodological and theoretical ramifications of these texts to the study of national literatures. -

Various foods created by the Korean diaspora originated from Utoro and Ikuno－ku Koreatown. Utoro is where the 1st generation Korean Japanese settled and Ikuno－ku Koreatown is where forced Korean laborers lived during and after the construction of the Hirano Canal. Korean Japanese took beef and pork offal Japanese didn′t eat and created horumonyaki. It was hunger that led to the creation of this dish， but it eventually became one of the most popular dishes in Japan. Another dish created by Korean Japanese， yakiniku， is even considered one of the 3 main dine out menus in Japan along with sushi and ramen. Korea′s kimchi is also popular in Japan for its rich flavor and healthy nutrients. Arirang Prime reviews the dining table of the first generation Korean Japanese， Korean dishes that stepped outside into the world， and the miracles they made. ▶4th generation Korean Japanese， food planner Yoo－hyang She lives by two names， Yuka and Yoo－hyang， but she is Korean. She works as a food planner who fuses the fare of Japan， Italy， and France with Korea′s cooking style. She traces back the steps of the Korean diaspora and searches for the vestiges of the miracle it made in Japan. ▶Utoro′s dining table Utoro， Isedacho， Uji－shi， Kyoto－fu 51. This is where 1，300 Koreans were forced into labor in 1941 for the purpose of building a military airfield. The forced labor continued for 4 years until the end of WWII in 1945 aborted the construction as well. The Korean laborers′ campsite was in Utoro. Even now， from the 1st generation to the 4th generation， there are many Korean－Japanese residents in Utoro. One of them is Um Yeong－bu， a 2nd generation Korean Japanese. Even though these Korean Japanese were born and raised in Japan， they lived the life of strangers in a foreign land. Their meals are not different from Korean families′， with kimchi， spinach， buchujeon (chive pancake)， and samgyeopsal. They are everyday foods， yet in Japan， they were unusual dishes. However， the Korean Japanese continued on their tradition with pride. This was possible because of a Korean grocery truck that visited Utoro once a week. The grocery truck and Utoro residents′ meals reflect their joys and sorrows of being strangers in a foreign land. ▶From a waste to a delicacy， horumonyaki On a shabby backstreet of Osaka， a small food stall opened in 1953. Its menu was horumonyaki. At the time， Japanese people didn′t eat beef or pork offals and threw them out. Koreans gathered them， seasoned them with chili powder and soy sauce， and grilled them over braziers. It was a good dish that could fill the hungry stomachs and provide nutrients. Kimchi is known as the representative health food, and Korean side dish shops bustle with people. Korean Chinese and Korean food expert Kim Sun-ok Korean food expert Kim Sun-ok is also Korean Chinese. She learned how to make gochujang (chili paste) from her mother and grandmother, and she always reminded herself of her identity by eating doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). She actively publicizes Korean food, and her Korean food class at Yanbian University is a big hit. Kim Ok-sun visits a Korean diaspora village in search of Korea's taste in China. Jeongam Village preserves hometown food Jeongam Village was established in 1938. During the Japanese colonial era, this area was a barren land. Japan decided to move Koreans to this area in hopes of cultivating the land and plundering its resources. That's when 80 families from Chungcheongbuk-do Province immigrated to Jeongam Village.They were faced with arduous labor, cold weather, and hunger, but they remembered their hometown food. They made a simplified version of kimchi to satisfy their cravings and they filled their hungry stomachs with corn noodles. They desperately clung on to their taste of home. Japan， a country that feels so close yet so far from Korea. It is also where Korean ancestors′ painful history lives on. Korea′s kimchi used to be looked down upon in Japan for its garlic smell. Now， 70 years after Korea′s liberation， more and more Japanese people are beginning to fall in love with kimchi.
Various foods created by the Korean diaspora originated from Utoro and Ikuno－ku Koreatown. Utoro is where the 1st generation Korean Japanese settled and Ikuno－ku Koreatown is where forced Korean laborers lived during and after the construction of the Hirano Canal.
Korean Japanese took beef and pork offal Japanese didn′t eat and created horumonyaki. It was hunger that led to the creation of this dish， but it eventually became one of the most popular dishes in Japan.
Another dish created by Korean Japanese， yakiniku， is even considered one of the 3 main dine out menus in Japan along with sushi and ramen. Korea′s kimchi is also popular in Japan for its rich flavor and healthy nutrients.
Arirang Prime reviews the dining table of the first generation Korean Japanese， Korean dishes that stepped outside into the world， and the miracles they made.
▶4th generation Korean Japanese， food planner Yoo－hyang
She lives by two names， Yuka and Yoo－hyang， but she is Korean. She works as a food planner who fuses the fare of Japan， Italy， and France with Korea′s cooking style. She traces back the steps of the Korean diaspora and searches for the vestiges of the miracle it made in Japan.
▶Utoro′s dining table
Utoro， Isedacho， Uji－shi， Kyoto－fu 51. This is where 1，300 Koreans were forced into labor in 1941 for the purpose of building a military airfield. The forced labor continued for 4 years until the end of WWII in 1945 aborted the construction as well. The Korean laborers′ campsite was in Utoro. Even now， from the 1st generation to the 4th generation， there are many Korean－Japanese residents in Utoro. One of them is Um Yeong－bu， a 2nd generation Korean Japanese.
Even though these Korean Japanese were born and raised in Japan， they lived the life of strangers in a foreign land. Their meals are not different from Korean families′， with kimchi， spinach， buchujeon (chive pancake)， and samgyeopsal. They are everyday foods， yet in Japan， they were unusual dishes. However， the Korean Japanese continued on their tradition with pride. This was possible because of a Korean grocery truck that visited Utoro once a week. The grocery truck and Utoro residents′ meals reflect their joys and sorrows of being strangers in a foreign land.
▶From a waste to a delicacy， horumonyaki
On a shabby backstreet of Osaka， a small food stall opened in 1953. Its menu was horumonyaki. At the time， Japanese people didn′t eat beef or pork offals and threw them out. The 2020 US Census will likely show that over 50% of all people in the US who report Japanese ancestry in 2020 will be mixed.
The number of individuals of full Japanese ancestry in the US FELL from 796,700 in 2000 to 763,325 in 2010, likely due to elderly deaths.

Within a decade, Japanese-language literature -- some produced in Japan and some produced locally -- had become a part of daily life; such texts continue to be produced to this day in Brazil, home of the largest population of persons of Japanese descent outside Japan. While recent scholarship has explored Japanese-language literary activity in the former colonies of the Japanese Empire, less attention has been paid to that of the 'Japanese diaspora.' This talk by Dr. Ted Mack, Associate Professor of Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Washington, will focus on the production and consumption of Japanese-language literature in pre-World War II Brazil. In so doing, it will present an empirical examination of that literature's materiality, a literary examination of three texts' stylistics, and an analytical examination of the methodological and theoretical ramifications of these texts to the study of national literatures.

1908 marked the beginning of mass migration from Japan to Brazil. Within a decade, Japanese-language literature -- some produced in Japan and some produced locally -- had become a part of daily life; such texts continue to be produced to this day in Brazil, home of the largest population of persons of Japanese descent outside Japan. While recent scholarship has explored Japanese-language literary activity in the former colonies of the Japanese Empire, less attention has been paid to that of the 'Japanese diaspora.' Japan， a country that feels so close yet so far from Korea. It is also where Korean ancestors′ painful history lives on. Korea′s kimchi used to be looked down upon in Japan for its garlic smell. Now， 70 years after Korea′s liberation， more and more Japanese people are beginning to fall in love with kimchi.
Various foods created by the Korean diaspora originated from Utoro and Ikuno－ku Koreatown. Utoro is where the 1st generation Korean Japanese settled and Ikuno－ku Koreatown is where forced Korean laborers lived during and after the construction of the Hirano Canal.
Korean Japanese took beef and pork offal Japanese didn′t eat and created horumonyaki. It was hunger that led to the creation of this dish， but it eventually became one of the most popular dishes in Japan.
Another dish created by Korean Japanese， yakiniku， is even considered one of the 3 main dine out menus in Japan along with sushi and ramen. Korea′s kimchi is also popular in Japan for its rich flavor and healthy nutrients.

Utoro， Isedacho， Uji－shi， Kyoto－fu 51. This is where 1，300 Koreans were forced into labor in 1941 for the purpose of building a military airfield. The forced labor continued for 4 years until the end of WWII in 1945 aborted the construction as well. The Korean laborers′ campsite was in Utoro. Even now， from the 1st generation to the 4th generation， there are many Korean－Japanese residents in Utoro. One of them is Um Yeong－bu， a 2nd generation Korean Japanese.
Even though these Korean Japanese were born and raised in Japan， they lived the life of strangers in a foreign land. Their meals are not different from Korean families′， with kimchi， spinach， buchujeon (chive pancake)， and samgyeopsal. They are everyday foods， yet in Japan， they were unusual dishes. However， the Korean Japanese continued on their tradition with pride. This was possible because of a Korean grocery truck that visited Utoro once a week. The grocery truck and Utoro residents′ meals reflect their joys and sorrows of being strangers in a foreign land.

Korean language is more commonly used than Chinese in Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture located in northeast part of China. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Japanese colonial era hit its peak in Korea and countless Koreans left home to settle down in Yanbian. Now, they are called "Korean Chinese."
Almost a century has passed, yet Korean Chinese people have preserved the food culture that was passed down from their parents. Their love for Korean food also captivated native Chinese people, and Yanbian even became one of the top 10 gourmet cities in China. Kimchi is known as the representative health food, and Korean side dish shops bustle with people.
Korean Chinese and Korean food expert Kim Sun-ok
Korean food expert Kim Sun-ok is also Korean Chinese. She learned how to make gochujang (chili paste) from her mother and grandmother, and she always reminded herself of her identity by eating doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew). She actively publicizes Korean food, and her Korean food class at Yanbian University is a big hit.

Jeongam Village preserves hometown food
Jeongam Village was established in 1938. During the Japanese colonial era, this area was a barren land. Japan decided to move Koreans to this area in hopes of cultivating the land and plundering its resources. That's when 80 families from Chungcheongbuk-do Province immigrated to Jeongam Village.They were faced with arduous labor, cold weather, and hunger, but they remembered their hometown food. They made a simplified version of kimchi to satisfy their cravings and they filled their hungry stomachs with corn noodles. They desperately clung on to their taste of home. Their dining table tells the story of their history.

"Korean-Japanese Marriages in Colonial Korea"
As is well known, the strict administrative control over the sexual mixing of the colonizers and colonized always constituted an important element in the European colonial policies. In Korea, colonized by Japanese in 1910, the situation was somewhat different. Not unlike the European colonies in Asia, the administration of the colonial Korea was predicated on the ethno-racial hierarchy in the relationship between “natives” and Japanese settlers. However, in the perspective the Koreans were supposed to be assimilated into the ranks of full-blown “Imperial subjects”, and intermarriage, seen as a strong assimilation tool, was seen by the colonial administrators in a positive light. The renewed emphasis was placed on the Korean-Japanese marriages in the end of the 1930s, as Korea’s resources were to be fully used in the all-out war-time mobilization. By the end of 1941, 5,747 registered mixed couples resided in Korea only; significant number of such marriages, not reflected in the colonial statistics, also took place in Japan proper.
Born in Leningrad (St-Petersburg) in the former USSR (1973) and educated at St-Petersburg State University (MA:1994) and Moscow State University (Ph.D. in ancient Korean history, 1996). Vladimir Tikhonov (Korean name – Pak Noja) has worked for Russian State University of Humanities (1996), KyungHee University (1997-2000) and for Oslo University as associate professor (2000-2006) and as a full professor (from 2006). His main field is the history of ideas in early modern Korea, particularly Social Darwinist influences in the formative period of Korean nationalism in the 1880s-1910s. Another major area of Tikhonov’s research is the history of Korean Buddhism in modern times, particularly in connection with nationalism and militarist violence. His book, Usung yolp’ae ui sinhwa (The Myth of the Survival of the Fittest, 2005) is one of the first monographic studies of Social Darwinism in modern Korea and its relations to Korean nationalism. The same topic has been dealt with in English in his Social Darwinism and Nationalism in Korea: The Beginnings (1880s-1910s) (Brill, 2010). Recently, he edited, together with Torkel Brekke, a book on the connections between Buddhism and militarism in Asia: Buddhism and Violence: Militarism and Buddhism in Modern Asia (Routledge, 2012). Not unlike the European colonies in Asia, the administration of the colonial Korea was predicated on the ethno-racial hierarchy in the relationship between “natives” and Japanese settlers. However, in the perspective the Koreans were supposed to be assimilated into the ranks of full-blown “Imperial subjects”, and intermarriage, seen as a strong assimilation tool, was seen by the colonial administrators in a positive light. The renewed emphasis was placed on the Korean-Japanese marriages in the end of the 1930s, as Korea’s resources were to be fully used in the all-out war-time mobilization. By the end of 1941, 5,747 registered mixed couples resided in Korea only; significant number of such marriages, not reflected in the colonial statistics, also took place in Japan proper.
Born in Leningrad (St-Petersburg) in the former USSR (1973) and educated at St-Petersburg State University (MA:1994) and Moscow State University (Ph.D. in ancient Korean history, 1996). Vladimir Tikhonov (Korean name – Pak Noja) has worked for Russian State University of Humanities (1996), KyungHee University (1997-2000) and for Oslo University as associate professor (2000-2006) and as a full professor (from 2006). His main field is the history of ideas in early modern Korea, particularly Social Darwinist influences in the formative period of Korean nationalism in the 1880s-1910s. Another major area of Tikhonov’s research is the history of Korean Buddhism in modern times, particularly in connection with nationalism and militarist violence. His book, Usung yolp’ae ui sinhwa (The Myth of the Survival of the Fittest, 2005) is one of the first monographic studies of Social Darwinism in modern Korea and its relations to Korean nationalism. The same topic has been dealt with in English in his Social Darwinism and Nationalism in Korea: The Beginnings (1880s-1910s) (Brill, 2010). Recently, he edited, together with Torkel Brekke, a book on the connections between Buddhism and militarism in Asia: Buddhism and Violence: Militarism and Buddhism in Modern Asia (Routledge, 2012). He also regularly contributes to South Korea’s liberal and progressive media, including socialist website www.redian.org

Just like a melting pot in which various ingredients mix together, Hawaii boasts a diverse array of cultures, ancient and new.
Choi Jae-won is a 2nd generation Korean American who works as a French food chef in Hawaii. He came to Hawaii when he was 10 years old, and he thought that recent Korean food fever in Hawaii was caused by the popularity of K-dramas and K-pop. He's a chef, but he doesn't know much about Korean cuisine.
So this time, he sets out to retrace Korean food's history in Hawaii.
And the story begins with picture brides.
In 1903, the fate of the Korean Empire was hanging by a thread from power struggles. Meanwhile, Hawaii's sugar cane plantations were having their own problems with Japanese laborers' ongoing strikes for higher wage. Hawaii had to bring substitute laborers, and Korean men became the solution. They became Korea's first official generation of emigrants.
However, a problem surfaced. There were no women Korean men could marry in Hawaii. This led to the arrival of picture brides in 1910. Marriages were arranged with just a photo of each other, and brides were just around the age of 20 when they arrived in Hawaii. It was only after their arrival that the picture brides found out that their soon-to-be husbands were up to 30 years older. Men only had pictures of themselves when they first arrived in Hawaii, so they wound up lying about their age.
Most of the picture brides were elites. They operated a restaurant for the laborers and found ways to survive. That was the beginning of Korean food history in Hawaii. Picture brides who came to Hawaii had experienced Japan's invasion of Korea. When the March 1st Movement broke out in 1919, picture brides began selling homemade kimchi to raise an independence fund. Korean foods like kimchi were popular among immigrant laborers. Many 2nd generation children grew up eating their kimchi and Korean food. As a result, Hawaii became the first place in the world to set up a kimchi factory.
The history of Hawaii's Korean food began in the hands of picture brides.They sold kimchi to support their homeland's independence movements.
Sugar cane plantations disappeared and picture brides were forgotten, but the food that the 2nd generation Korean Americans ate while their parents worked on the plantations is giving rise to a melting pot of food cultures.

Am nächsten Tag wird das Kirschblütenfest gefeiert. Zu diesem Anlass wird jedes Jahr das Dessert Sakura Mochi zubereitet.
